What a Game

That Kick

It's a tremendous shame that a great game of rugby had to end in such a contentious way - but hey we won this one and we have lost plenty of others to dubious decisions. All you can do is take the ref's decision and get on with it

Billy Twelvetrees last minute 40m kick won the game 26-24 to get our season back on track and put a bit of a dent in Saints title ambitions.

It was a pulsating game of rugby and a great advert for the Premiership so it's sad that all the talk is about refereeing.

Quite why the new scrum laws make it so hard for Refs is not clear. It should be far easier to manage than the breakdown but in this game stand in Ref Martin Fox plainly struggled.

Apparently he set 23 scrums during the game with but eight resulting in penalties and one in a free-kick. We got the rub of the green with six of the decisions going our way.

Of course the important one was the last one - the very last bit of play in the game. TV shows us what really happened and Saints do have reason to be aggrieved.

After two goes the ball came out out  on the third only for  Ben Morgan to kick it back into the scrum and then  Northampton were penalised for breaking early with scrum-half Lee Dickson straying offside.

Saints do have a case in arguing that it should have been a free kick to them but most neutrals would probably agree that we did enough yto have been worthy of the narrow win.

In Stooke we had the stand-out player - a young man with a tremendous future in front of him.
