The Kingsholm gates will be open for the first time  on Saturday September 9th as Nottingham arrive at the start of what will be a very unusual season..

The opening game with a 3.00 kick off will be in the new Premiership Rugby Cup. How that competition will develop is anybody's guess and it's birth comes in troubled times - the Premiership down to ten clubs following the demise of Worcester, Wasps and Irish.

So, fewer income generating Premiership games - in any case the main competition  doesn't kick off until October 14th when Quins visit. Those early games will also be affected by the absence of players returning in dribs and drabs from the World Cup.

And therein lies another issue. Will England surprise us all and at least claim a big scalp on their journey through the pool and , hopefully, into the knock-out stages? Their recent performances have hadly done the game any favours.

With all that going on let's hope the Premiership Cup sees some flowing rugby, decent crowds and the odd big scalp being taken - as long as its not a Cherry and White one.

The game really needs a reboot and two stronng leagues  - the Championship has been a  second best for too long.
