The Celtic Crusaders have appointed David Watkins as their new president. The former Wales and GB Rugby League star replaces Jonathan Davies in the role.

Watkins was presented to the fans on Saturday - ironically against Salford; a club whom the 67-year-old joined for a record £15,000 fee in 1967.

Many fans will be pleased to see a change in the role; with some supporters feeling Davies' impact had been minimal since the club was founded some four years ago. Anyone who has read Davies' book ‘Code-breaker' will appreciate the importance the man has always placed on a long-term media career; and his involvement with the BBC was the reason cited for him stepping down.

"It was a big decision to stand down but I may have to commentate and give independent opinions about the Crusaders," said Davies.

"I didn't think it would be right to continue under those circumstances. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here. David is a fantastic choice as president and I wish him all the best."

Watkins is the only man to have captained both the Great British team and Union's British and Irish Lions and will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Brewery Field.

The former Barbarian's RL playing career came to an end in 1979 after a season at Swinton. He has since coached Wales RL, Great Britain and was team manager at Newport RFC for the 1992/1992 season. He is also a patron of the League game in Wales.

The move is expected to fuel speculation that the Saders will move to Newport for 2010. Watkins is also president of the Gwent Dragons and would be able to aid relations between Cru and the Rodney Parade set-up.

I think JD's enthusiasm was probably limited.

He is firmly back in the 15 a-side code ranks although the Beeb still persist in using him on their (limited) RL coverage which must rankle with a few northern RL fans who do not have the same 'feelings' for him as a "local player".
