Wigan XIII to travel

Though the wait for competitive action goes on for another week, the South Wales Scorpions will be in action for the first time on Sunday. The new Neath-based outfit entertain a Wigan Warriors XIII in a pre-season friendly at the Gnoll.

Fans will get the opportunity to see a host of players in action as the Scorpions look set to give the bulk of their first-team squad a run-out against the Warriors.

Five Crusaders will also be in the squad, including Anthony Blackwood and Lloyd White - though it remains to be seen whether the Scorpions staff will prefer to start with their own players.

The game is a glamorous opening fixture for the Scorpions. Wigan is one of the biggest names in Rugby League make the journey down from Lancashire.

The Warriors are in Super League action on Saturday against Warrington, though the club have confirmed that all fit senior players not involved in that game will make the journey to South Wales. Under-20s will make up the rest of the Wigan line-up.

Wigan's visit not only marks the Scorpions' first ever fixture, but is also the first rugby league fixture to take place at the Gnoll. It is hoped that the people of Neath - well known for supporting their semi-professional Union side in good numbers - will turn out to watch the town's newest recruits.
