South Wales v. Hunslet – match preview

Hunslet preview

By Chris O'Brien,

The South Wales Scorpions will look to make it three home wins on the bounce on Bank Holiday Monday. Hunslet Hawks make the trip down to Neath as Anthony Seibold's men look to build on last week's thumping of the London Skolars.

After the disappointment of Thursday's Crusaders game being postponed at short notice, rugby league fans in South Wales will be hoping for another promising display from the Scorpions.

Seibold's men sit second in the Championship One table - but face a real tough test against an equally impressive Hunslet side.

The Hawks sit fourth in the table and have three wins from their opening four games. They go into the game on the back of a 54-12 drubbing of hapless Doncaster, though they did suffer a home defeat to Oldham earlier in the campaign.

The Scorpions are sweating on the fitness of a number of their players and many will be put through late fitness tests.

Press reports in Yorkshire suggest that on-form Hunslet have splashed out for this fixture and booked their players into a local hotel last night to help preparations for the fixture.

Just got back - and I have to say that we were second best in most departments and fell away badly in the second half. BUT we kept trying right up until the final whistle.

Hunslet were a well organised and crafty RL side.

weren't to bad in the 1st 1/2 rog but laying off tackles was one of our bigest mistakes today. But there again has you say we never said die and kept on in there till the end.
All in all was a good game to watch and some nice try's been scored.Even if some were from the other side(Sm31) [:wor kid:] looking forward to the next game......

Agree - I wasn't complaining mars just commenting on the game as I saw it.

As long as the team give 100% I won't criticise as we are on a steep learning curve and we have perhaps had too good a start (if you know what I mean). It's a long term plan and we need to learn from every experience.

On a seperate note the soup was very spicy and the result wasI had to have an extra Strongbow to cool it down.

Does Andy Legg watch all our games ?

Ave to agree. They were the better side. Just older and a lot bigger boys with more experience. The ref was so one sided though. Spolt the game. We just could not get into the game with his decisions. Fingers crossed for a fairer ref next Sunday.

I said to Leggy and Jenks they had cursed us as it was the first time I'd seen them there! If he can play RL like he defended as a tough tackling ,hard running centre back in football he'd be a great aquisition by the Scorps!!!!
(ok maybe not)

we got bullied by a team that has been around for a long time.
they have players that have been in SL
an old saying is
"if you boss and win the ball at the ruck area you will win the game "
thats what they did and did it well
we need to play that way against teams like this

i have to agree the ref was a total ***** ******
words i cannont say
think his name said it all
KIDD
all the boys can do is take it on the chin learn from it
and next week dont let the same happen
i am sure siebs will sort this out

Have to agree with the previous comments, We were outmuscled by a better team &, given our inexperience, a result like this was always on the cards at some point. On a more positive note we didn't play badly its just that the other side were better. I await next weeks game against Oldham with interest. The boys now know what is needed to compete week in week out at this level & I'm sure they'll take on board the lessons learned. Excellent crowd BTW, hopefully the first timers will have enjoyed the game despite the result & most of them will be back next sunday

Thought the Marsh Twins were excellent!
They maybe a pain in the backside but have a lot of experience and that showed yesterday. You could see why RugbyLeague World Mag has said Hunslett are No.1 for Promotion.
Thought Roets was good yesterday and was clear MoM for the Scorpions. Some big hits and ran some tidy lines.
A big improvement required for the next game against Oldham.

Hunslet were far the better side with out a doubt, but I thought our performance was sub standard too say the least.

Inexperienced or whatever, there's no excuss for the number of missed tackles, silly penalties conceeded, knock ons' etc.
The game was only a few minutes old and we conceeded TWO bloody stupid penalties which as it happens led to Hunslet's first try.

With the exception of a few players, Christian Roets (11) being one, the rest played as if they'd just come off a weekend @#$%& up!(Sm31)

There just didn't seem to be much enthusiasm in the team. Overall they seemed lathargic and out of sorts. A far cry from York (and Skolars) where the boys made mistakes but more than made up for it by their enthusiasm and aggression.
And before you all bip - 'We've only been going five minutes, they've still getting used to each other' I'd like the remind you that FIVE players made their debuts for us at York and the team played brilliantly. Against Hunslet the Scorpions seemed down in the dumps.

We were totally outplayed all the way through the game aside from the moments we scored and a little flurry late on. Its quite worrying for later in the season. It does appear there's going to be a big gap between the biggest teams in the division and the rest of us. We must still just aim for that seventh spot and try and get in the play-offs – and you never know what will happen from there. We certaintly lost a lot of momentum today though.

Thanks Macca. Most appreciated. I was impressed with your travelling numbers and your lads made a good noise when you all congregated together on the terrace for the second-half. I always like to see a flag or two too! Can we expect to see many other clubs bring more fans than that down to the Gnoll in this division?

Thanks for your kind words about the team. Too many of the lads are still adapting to rugby league and I think you were too crafty for us, mixed things up well and have a good balanced size. Your number 8 was one of the biggest players I've seen on an RL field - and you've also got plenty of pace there. You must be confident of winning promotion?

judging by the stats of other clubs more established we seem to be growing and with only a few more games left to go with the RU i wonder if they will grow even more.Hopefully they will (Sm151)

i think york might bring a few down mate. when you play donny, gateshead, london, blackpool and poss workington you'll struggle to get many of their fans traveling. i'd like to think we're good enough to get promotion this year but there's a long way to go and theres a few teams with quality waiting to clip our wings. blackpool and oldham look strong. to be honest tho i dont think many teams will beat you at home, i think your a hard working team with plenty of pace and you run hard with the ball, also with loz wildbore hes capable of winning games by himself.

good luck again and try beating oldham and do us a favour on sunday
