Beaten at Blackpool

Steve Parry scored an impressive brace but it wasn't enough as South Wales slipped to another defeat. A 44-24 reverse at the Blackpool Panthers deals a body blow to the club's hopes of qualifying for the end-of-season play-offs.

The Panthers were heavy favourites going into the game - despite a recent dip in form - but the Scorpions will see this as an opportunity missed.

Anthony Seibold's men led by twelve points at one stage but, once again, a failure to compete for eighty minutes proved crucial.

John Clough's unconverted try gave the Panthers an ideal start, but the thirty or so travelling Welshmen were delighted as Ashley Bateman levelled things up on eleven minutes and Steve Parry bagged his twelfth try of the season to make it 10-4.

Andrew Gay ran over the next try and Loz Wildbore booted over to make it 16-4 but, perhaps crucially, the Panthers got themselves back into the game moments before the break as Thomas Hemmingway's converted try reduced the arrears to six.

Blackpool showed more fitness and guile after the break as they slowly seized control of the game. Martin Aiscough and Casey Mayberry were amongst the scorers as the Scorpions struggled to cope with the home side's flurry of attacks.

Steve Parry's late try gave the Scorpions a shout of a bonus point, but a rampant Blackpool bagged the final try of the game with Hemmingway's boot sealing a twenty point win for the Lancastrians.

The fixture at home v Gateshead Thunder is a pefect one to get a much needed win and keep things on track, We all knew it was going to be a tough season and a roller coaster ride - let's stick with the boys and look for a good win next weekend!

Our performance deserved a bonus point. The lads put in an awful lot of effort for no reward. We were severely punished for our mistakes. We don't seem to be able to recover from our errors. Too many times men were stranded alone in defence and we fell off tackles. Fine in attack but lots to learn on defence.

I agree i thought we deserved a bonus point. Great effort by the lads. Mistakes were punished by a side with experienced players. This is a new side so you have to expect naive play. I am next seeing the Scorpions at Rochdale. Keep up the good work Mr Seibold from your fan in Wigan.

100% correct kenny
first half we matched them for 40 min
missed tackles and a very well drilled blackpool in the second half killed us off.
twice they scored trys with the same move
quick ball from the left moved to the right then a very nice switch back pass to a player running the angle
after they did this the first time i never though the same move would work again BUT it did
we did deserve a bonus point but this was again another that got away
next week GATESHEAD
i know people will be looking for us to put 30/40/50/60 points on them but this is rugby league
just ask ROCHDALE who would have said the skolers would win today

One move in particular when they went from their own try line once in four stages to score at the other end almost in a straight line through the middle was disappointing, could hear their Captain, Best marshaling their defensive line well , they pulled up far quicker than the Scorpions did in the second half and dealt with our wingers well, that has to be the experience telling there.

Next week, Gateshead, Im sure most of us expect a resounding result there, but a comfortable win getting the set plays and the timing right is most important.

As an aside with the Skolars result, I head rumours that all might not be well up at Rochdale.

A really good weekend of Rugby League and Blackpool despite the Welsh results.

All is not well at most RL clubs outside of Super League, but do the RFL give a toss about anything outside of Stupid League - No! Watch out for big news at Blackpool!

Last time I watched football in Blackpool Man U won there 3-0 in 1973 in the old division 2. I remember Jim McCalliog scoring but don't recall who scored the others. News is to do with Blackpool Panthers RLFC. They got their share of troubles.

Thought it would be a painful reminder seeing those day glo orange shirts again, but apart from a few flags I didn't see more than one shirt the entire weekend. In talking to one of the stewards seems fans see the football success as having a detrimental impact on their crowds and the lack of coverage despite them being 3rd in the league, they got pretty hardcore bunch of supporters who are scrapping to keep the club going financially for the long term though they don't seem too confident unless they get new ownership and move back into Blackpool before next season. Shares many similarities to previous attempts at RL in South Wales. Cracking club house , can recommend the Black Sheep for you Real Ale fans out there. Hope they keep it going but the club is out of the way in an area not specifically RL orientated. Apparently there were 266 there.We had a decent away following of about 30 or so too.Weekend in Blackpool and League, what more could you want??

oh no don't say that swanseablue, Black sheep, great clubhouse, man am I gutted I couldnt go. I'm sure that's a misprint, didnt you mean, the beer was rubbish, or in fact you dont know because they didnt have any and all they had was tetleys out of a can which was past its sell by date and the club house was closed, in fact just say it was a rubbish weekend, go on I need to feel better! lol
