Mark Rowley's Scorpions produced a decent display against London Skolars on Sunday to bag an important win and run over four tries in the process. 232 were at the Gnoll.

South Wales Scorpions claimed a 26-16 home win over London Skolars on Saturday evening in a game which burst into life after the half-time interval. 

At the Gnoll, the South Walians ran over four tries and are on course to finish in eighth spot in Championship One.

The Scorpions started brightly and threatened an early try on seven minutes before Casey Bromilow’s dangerous grubber kick was gathered up by the Skolars defence.

However, the deadlock was broken moments later. 

Bromilow’s breakaway gained the Scorpions some crucial yardage before Jamie Murphy was brought down. From the following tackle, Andrew Gay picked up the ball in space and burst over the line before Lewis Reece converted.

The Skolars fought back impressively and went close shortly after Gay’s try, with Dave Williams falling inches short of the Scorpions line. 

Parity was restored, however, on 24 minutes as substitute Saqib Murtza found his way over the line and Dylan Skee slotted over the extras.

After the half-time break, the Scorpions burst out of the traps and were soon back ahead courtesy of a Chris Davies try. 

A fine solo run combined with a missed Skolars tackle allowed Davies to cross, and the extras were duly converted.

Things got even better for the Scorpions on 50 minutes thanks to a brilliant try from Christiaan Roets. He showed great pace on a trademark run from the half-way line and Reece’s conversion allowed the Scorpions to open up a 12-point lead.

The game had proved a tight affair fought out mainly in the middle of the park – but Roet’s superb try sparked life into the contest.

Skolars got themselves back into proceedings on the hour-mark. Some fantastic passing work proved too much for the Scorpions; and with a huge overlap on the left-hand side, Smokie Junor crossed.

However, the hosts soon extinguished hopes of a comeback from the Londoners.

A fine dummy from Steve Parry fooled the Skolars, before he switched sides and played the ball to Andrew Gay. The 21-year-old showed a clean pair of heels to two defenders before scoring his 15th league try of the season underneath the posts.

Reece’s conversion looked to have put the game beyond the Skolars – before the visitors bounced back again with an unconverted Sam Gee try.

As the clock ticked down, a penalty – which took Reece’s personal tally for the evening to ten points – made it 26-16 and the Scorpions maintained composure to see out the game and claim a sixth league win of the season.

Nice to see ex Eccles players facing each other - Raff (Scorpions) and Saqib Murtza (Skolars).

Same errors in defence (around hour mark I think?) that let them in and made a game of it but the boys did enough in the end and should have won by more. Great indivdual break by Roets for the try and good to see Reece exploit the space down the left a little more as with the Rochdale match, should have seen more of the ball down there rather than hitting it up through the middle.

Some promising performances now in the last two games before the internationals would be great.
