Victory for South Wales

South Wales Scorpions claimed victory over Wigan Warriorsa Under-20s in a hastily-arranged friendly match at the Co-operative Community Stadium. Steve Parry scored a brace as the Scorpions ran over four tries to win the game by the slender margin of 20 points to 16.

To be brutally honest, comments from Head Coach Dave Clark and the club that this was a "memorable" win probably over-state this victory significantly.

It was - let's be honest - a friendly arranged at very short notice against Wigan's Under-20 side. The real test comes in the competitive games, and the Scorpions face a crucial league game against Barrow Raiders next weekend.

However, this was an important and morale-boosting victory for Clark's men against a Wigan side which included players who boast Super League experience, and they deserve credit for that.

Following a poor start to the campaign, the Scorpions have showed character in travelling to Wigan at short notice and claiming a win - and this must now be replicated at competitive level, with the Scorpions' pre-season promotion hopes dwindling at a lighting pace. 

Scorps won the game 20-16, and out-scored the Warriors by four tries to three, in a contest which was only confirmed on Thursday. 

Dalton Grant and Jacob Morgan scored tries in the opening nine minutes, with fans favourite Steve Parry bagging a brace later on in the game.

Former Celtic Crusader Jamie Murphy was amongst the best performers for the Scorpions, against a Wigan side who included a host of former South Wales players, such as Gil Dudson and Ben Flower.

With the visitors holding a narrow four-point lead in the closing stages, the Scorpions showed great effort in defence to keep out the Warriors and wet conditions. 

Supporters will hope this run-out in the North West will give the team a boost ahead of an important May month, with league games against Barrow, London Skolars, Rochdale and Oldham awaiting the Scorpions.

I know we are a positive bunch on here - so apologies if my dig at the "memorable" quote doesn't keep with that tone; but I think it is important to have perspective.

I'm pleased we won the game - but it was a friendly arranged at short notice, and its in competitive games where it really counts.

Hopefully this is a step in the right direction though as we really need to get the season back on track. Pleased to see Parry score two tries too, as he will be crucial to any success we have this season.

May is a big month with some tough games.

Well done Scorpions on your success up at Wigan.

this win is "memorable"
we played a wigan side that had 5 SL players in it
(by that i mean they have played in SL this season)
it was not till thursday that our players knew that they would be playing.
The weather was some of the worst i have seen.

wigan at what ever level do not like to loose
