Drop goal for Loz!

South Wales Scorpions claimed a stunning away win at Oldham to make it back-to-back wins in Championship One. In hot conditions at the Whitebank Stadium, the Scorpions ran over six tries and played with impressive leverls of confidence and determination to claim a massive win in Lancashire, lifting them above rivals North Wales Crusaders in the table.  

Steven Parry bagged a brace, with debutant Ryan King, James Greenwood, Jamie Murphy and James also running over tries in an entertaining Championship One clash.

In an end-to-end first-half, Oldham bounced back on three occasions. On his debut, King broke the deadlock in he corner before his knock-on provided Lewis Reed the opportunity to score.

Scorpion Greenwood, in his home town, punished slack Oldham defending to put the Scorpions back ahead, before John Clough restored parity. Parry and Michael Ward then exchanged tries as the teams went in level at 18-18 at the break.

Clark’s side were quick out of the traps after the break and took the lead for a fourth time as Murphy dived onto a tricky Loz Wildbore grubber-kick, but Oldham yet again stormed back as Greenwood completed a brace with a converted try.

The Scorpions kept surging forward and tries from James and Murphy looked to have sealed the result, before Wildbore increased the gap to 11 points with, amazingly, the first ever drop goal in the club’s history.

Oldham rallied in the latter stages and a converted try from Dave Tootill set up a nervous finish, but the South Walians held out for a crucial league win.

The result gives the Scorpions camp a massive morale boost. Dave Clark’s men have won back-to-back games for the first time this season and can now look ahead to fixtures against Whitehaven and London Skolars with renewed optimism.

Well done South Wales – a massive result.
