The 2013 Rugby League season is a few months away but the new format needs to be clarified for supporters and the following may help to confirm the current position. Hopefully the changes will lead to the continued expansion of the 13 man code in the UK!

The 2013 Championship 1 will be a semi-professional competition and the third tier of the sport in the country (England and Wales)

The 2013 season will see three new teams enter the division alongside the six remaining teams that were not promoted at the end of 2012. This means that the 2013 Championship 1 season will consist of 9 teams.

So the league will be formed by Gateshead Thunder, London Skolars, North Wales Crusaders, Oldham Roughyheads, Rochdale Hornets, South Wales Scorpions, Hemel Stags, Oxford RL and Gloucester All Golds.

The promotion/relegation positions and the play-off format also revert back to the normal formats, This will mean two teams relegated from the Championship and two teams promoted from Championship 1, which will be the team who finishes top of the league and winner of the play-offs. There is no relegation from this league as it is the lowest tier of professional rugby league.

All of the teams will compete in the Challenge Cup and the National League Cup.

Kenny if you had seen us play last season you'd know that the priority was the finishing above Gateshead! LOL

Realistically after three years and if we want to expand we MUST get a promotion push going next year, the league is weaker and we are now an established club.

I watched 3 games and Scorpions did well in all of them. You finished on a high at Barrow despite defeat. All the best for the new season. Hope you get a decent run in the Challenge cup.

I think top 4 would be a brilliant effort for you as I have not seen much strengtheing at your end mate. North Wales have recruited really well and I expect Skolars, with their links to Broncos to improve yet again. Oldham have a new coaching team with good contacts so, despite their off field problems I think they could still get a decent side together. I think Rochdale may miss out as they have lost a few experienced players and the only ones I can see incomming are young and will take a season to adapt to the step up.

Good summary Kenny which I cannot and would not argue with. I fail to see how the new boys will do anything but struggle, however there maybe a surprise package amongst them.

A new signing or two down at the Gnoll would be good.

Keep the info and thoughts coming from up there, it is appreciated by us exiles down in South Wales.

If there is a dark horse among the new sides I think it will be Hemel. Been there a couple of times and they are a well established, genuine Rugby eague club. Eccles full back has signed for them for the comming season.

Was tempted to ask what was "well established" and "genuine" after what seems like our repeated resets back to year zero.

However joking aside it would be nice to see the RFL's faith repaid with an expansion side making the running and if it is not us then Hemel might not be a bad result.

By genuine Rugby League club upn I mean that thats all their ground is - a rugby league club. Many teams are based at Rugby Union grounds or football grounds or multi sports venues. Hemel belomgs to Hemel rugby league, much like Eccles ARLFC.
