The new season is approaching.

The South Wales Scorpions season starts on St David's Day weekend with a trip to Rochdale in the League One Cup. Before the season starts in earnest there is a high profile local friendly at Cardiff Arms Park on Wednesday 11th February when Cardiff City Rugby League Club will take on the South Wales Scorpions. Tickets are very competitively priced at £4 for adults. Kick off is 19.45.

The season starts with away games at Rochdale in the Cup and then a trip to Cheltenham in League One. The Scorpions first home league game at Mountain Ash is on Sunday 12th April, however watch out for news of the Challenge Cup.

A question from a (relative) newbie....

There are 14 teams in the division but the club only plays 22 fixtures so presumably 4 games are "dropped".

Who decides who you don't play? It seems to bring an element of luck into the fixture scheduling which I hate.

Why can't the club play 26 fixtures? Is it cost constraints to help all the clubs?

If it was that simple it wouldn't be Rugby League!

We had similar things before like who do we play twice at home etc.

Not sure who makes the rules up but can you imagine in football if Arsenal played Burnley three times but Chelsea twice, whilst Man City played the other way around!!

It would not happen. smiling smiley

The Magic weekend for Super League clubs is another RL example of it not being fair. Each club's extra ficture is a local derby!! OK if you rivals are rubbish!

That is why I love RL!!!

You play the closest geographical teams twice, it's to save travel costs.

It's why 1st vs 2nd play off at the end of the year for automatic promotion.

Thanks both, that explains a lot even if leaving it feeling a little unsatisfactory.

I see the club is not visiting Barrow but is going to Oldham so I guess there has to be some flexibility over who counts as "local" or else Barrow and Newcastle would presumably play no-one lol
