The joke was at our expense
Irish were smiling..

4,515 people turned up at Kingston Park this Sunday afternoon to watch what they hoped would be a display of entertaining rugby. Things started well with introductions being made between those supporters who had made the long journey north, and loyal Falcons fans.
The travelling band that played in the South Stand bar had their performance relayed to the crowds outside. Be-wigged exiles fans cajoled us into buying JC joke books, worth every penny, which we duly did in the spirit of comradeship and friendliness.
But it went downhill from there...
I’m afraid that when the ball left Jonny’s boot at kick off time the illusion was shattered.
The only try of the afternoon was scored by Jamie Noon, playing fullback. A controversial try, apparently, but one that looked okay from the South stand.
The first half closed at 13 points to 12 in Falcons favour, just when the Exiles followers were encouraging their team on a rampage towards our try line. Alas for them it was not to be and the whistle went with no further score.
Unspiring
The game continued in its uninspiring fashion well into the dying minutes of the second half. It was only with less than ten minutes to play that Falcons woke up and played with the grit and urgency that we know they can. The Irish kept us at bay and even managed to threaten our line right at the end of the game.
At Falcons 16, Irish 21 we still lived in hope but after another infringement, of which there were many, the resulting penalty was despatched by Barry Everitt for the Irish to put this dire game out of reach of the Falcons.
Final score Falcons 16, London Irish 24.
Man of the match, Hugh Vyvyan, a good choice, even if it was for his commitment in the threequarters. Yup it was that kind of a match.
Starting line up for Falcons.

And know I have not read the team sheet incorrectly.
Whatever the plan was, it backfired Mr Andrew. The Irish are smiling but it should never be allowed again.
I’m off to read my JC joke book; I may be able to raise a smile by closing time tonight.
