GALLAGHER PREM RULES

The Gallagher Premiership Rugby competition is currently comprised of 10 clubs.

The 2024/25 season begins in Septemberand ends in June. During the regular part of the Gallagher Premiership season, each team plays other twice, once at home, and once away from home. In a season with 10 teams, that would mean that each team plays 18 matches (Nine at home, nine away from home).

Premiership Rugby matches adhere to World Rugby Laws of the game. Matches are 80 minutes long (made up of two 40-minute halves), and teams can score match points via tries, conversions, drop-goals, and penalties. Tries are worth 5 points, conversions are worth 2 points, penalties and drop-goals are worth 3 points each. Throughout the season, teams will try to accrue league points, which help them climb up the league standings. Winning a match is worth 4 league points, drawing a match is worth 2 points per team, and losing is worth 0 points. Bonus points are also awarded in Gallagher Premiership Rugby: scoring 4 or more tries is worth 1 bonus point and losing a match by 7 match points or fewer is also worth a bonus point, often referred to as a “losing bonus point”.

After all regular season matches have been played, the four teams at the top of the Premiership table qualify for the Play-Offs with the winners of each Play-Off match qualifying for the Gallagher Premiership Rugby Final. The winning team in the Final is crowned Gallagher Premiership Rugby Champions of the season.

The top eight sides qualify for the following season's Investec Champions Cup with those outside the top eight qualifying for the EPCR Challenge Cup.

The bottom side in the Gallagher Premiership Rugby table will face a two-legged play-off match with the RFU Championship's top side, subject to Premiership Rugby eligibility criteria being met by the Championship side.

GALLAGHER PREMIERSHIP RULES

During Gallagher Premiership points will be awarded as follows:

- 4 points will be awarded for a win

- 2 points will be awarded for a draw

- 1 point will be awarded to a team that loses a match by 7 points or less

- 1 point will be awarded to a team scoring 4 tries or more in a match

In the case of equality at any stage of the Season, positions at that stage of the season shall be determined firstly by the number of wins achieved and then on the basis of match points differential. A Club with a larger number of wins shall be placed higher than a Club with the same number of league points but fewer wins.

If Clubs have equal league points and equal number of wins then a Club with a larger difference between match points “for” and match points “against” shall be placed higher in the Premiership League than a Club with a smaller difference between match points “for” and match points “against”.

Should two Clubs have the same number of league points and the same match points difference, the Club having scored more match points “for” shall be placed higher in the Premiership League than the Club having the lesser number of match points “for”.

If the above does not establish different Premiership League positions then the Club in the higher position shall be the Club that has achieved the higher aggregate match points scored by it in the same season against the other Club.

If this still does not establish the position then the Club who has won the most matches, excluding its first Premiership League match of the season, then its second Premiership League match and so on, until it can be established which the higher placed Club is.
