Falcons Get That Elusive Bonus Point!

Try Maker In Chief

At last a try bonus point! Newcastle Falcons overcame awful conditions and a stubborn Bath to run in a second half try feast which gave us a well deserved 36-9 victory ... and the prospect of an exciting end to the season.

It didn't look that easy in the first half when both sides struggled in the gusty gale and the frequent heavy showers made the ball like a bar of soap.

Even Jonny Wilkinson dropped a couple of balls but he fared better that Ian Balshaw! He had a nightmare of an afternoon, dropping the ball seemingly every time it came near him, and missing two drop goals in the first half..

Bath did go ahead on ten minutes when Olly Barkley landed a penalty but Wilkinson equalised two minutes later after the visitors wandered offside

Then Dave Barnes and Stu Grimes examined the contents of their handbags, with Stu's deemed the more offensive, and young Olly gave the struggling visitors the lead on the half hour.

But there was nothing in the Bath play to unduly worry us and, when Wilkinson set up an attack with a superb 45 metre kick, you felt something was on. Bath fought valiantly on their line but eventually the sustained pressure told and Tom May saw a gap and took Wilkinson's pass to evade Tindall and go over between the posts

Barkley managed a third penalty before half time but we went in 10-9 up.

The lead was increased eight minutes into the second half when we again mounted sustained pressure and Wilkinson delivered another try scoring pass. This time Michael Stephenson was the grateful recipient.

And would you believe it he did it again two minutes later with Jamie Noon taking his turn to gallop in with the Bath heads dropping by the second.

At 24-9 that incredibly elusive try bonus point was looming at last, and it was boosted by the sin binning of Mark Gabey ten minutes from time for collapsing the scrum.

We got that fourth try when Inga cleverly spun the ball back inside to Wilkinson who incredibly gave the final pass for yet another try. This time he selected Epi, who was in space, and he gratefully accepted the try scoring opportunity.

But we were not finished and with just a couple of minutes left we got our fifth. Inga was the man to go over but it ruined Jonny's day because he hadn't made the pass. Instead it was hapless Balshaw who completely messed up a kick through from Jame Noon and Inga scored what must have been one of the least dramatic tries of his long career.

OK, we may have only been playing Bath, but it was the kind of win we have been threatening all season and never quite achieving .. one where we won because of MrWilkinson's vision and slick hands and not because of his kicking.

Now for Sarries and another five points.
