Who said that Rob Andrew bears grudges? The Falcons boss has agreed to play the new Borders side in a pre-season warm up game on August 14th and that means lining up against Messrs Weir, Graham and Armstrong. So far the venue hasn't been decided but it should be a lively encounter.

The Borders are assembling a canny, if ageing, squad with rumours rife that Gregor Townsend will be the big summer signing. Presumably they will also be looking for a consistent kicker.

And why should Rob be bearing a grudge? Well not because his loyal servants are earning a last chance but because a successful Borders side would undoubtedly pinch some spectators from Kingston Park. Dozens of loyal rugby fans come down the A1 to see top class rugby but now they'll have it closer at hand. Still its good for the game.

Borders squad so far:Gary Armstrong, Stephen Cranston, Craig Dunlea, Iain Fairley, Ross Ford, George Graham, Clark Laidlaw, Scott MacLeod, Richard Metcalfe, Cameron Murray, Scott Paterson, Steve Scott, Matt Taylor, Kevin Utterson, Nikki Walker, Tony Walker and Doddie Weir.
