Match action v. York

South Wales Scorpions produced an embattled display, with plenty of spirit and heart on show - but, ultimately, were second best against York City Knights and have crashed out of the Challenge Cup.

Scorpions second fixture at Mountain Ash - and the club's first since making a permanent switch to the ground - saw kick-off delayed by 15 minutes.

Unfortunately, hoards of traffic making its way to the ground was not the reason. 247 were in attendance. Instead, a new dead ball line was needed, with the original markings too near to fencing.

On the pitch, the Scorpions - unsurprisingly - have crashed out of the competition, but will take some positives from a gutsy 20-4 defeat to an established York side.

Jonny Presley broke the deadlock for the visitors after two goal-line drop-outs. His try followed a spell of early sustained York pressure, including a stunning
move, involving a cheeky kick and quick passing; but which was ruled out for an infringement.

The resolute Scorpions fought back, however. York's determined defence twice held up the South Walians short of the line, but Paul Songhurst later crossed after a good passing move.

Homeless York's superior fitness and guile ultimately told, however, in a crucial five-minute spell of dominance in the second-half.

Kane Riley stretched the Knights’ advantage, with tries from Kristian Brining and a fine running effort from Peter Aspinall securing a 16-point win.

Even a brief Cup run could have been so important for the Scorpions - but York were too strong. However, there were positives we must build on, as the latest chapter of South Walian rugby league kicks-off at Mountain Ash.

It'll be four weeks, however, before our charges are back in action. A long wait - but at least NRL's Footy Show is back on Premier Sports!

Let's hope we can build on this. Our first two games have been defeats but not in the league so effectively they can be treated as excellent build up games!

im aware we have said 'something to build on' lots and lots and lots of times befor. but there was stuff to build on here. i really hope we can avoid finishing bottom and, if mountain ash is the longer term plan, then make it work here. first-half thought we were competitive, and with a bit more luck could have been ahead as we were held up a number of times. discipline was good and lads seemed to really want to do well. not a bad avo all together.
