Something has changed at

When you go down to the woods today, be sure of a big surprise. As the song goes, but in this case it's the landscape that has changed. The goalposts which have graced Brickfields since we moved to the current site are no longer, see the lead photo. As part of the R.M. 350 anniversary celebrations the goalposts were taken out for the forthcoming show.

This was no easy thing, having survived an attempet by Dawsey and the then squad to remove them in order that the F.A.B. team might paint them. But as the posts resisted all efforts to remove them the best we could do was to grind off the worst of the rust and re paint them to just above the cross bar.

This time the forces of an outside team effort was neccessary to achieve what couldn't be done previously. 

The removal was not easy, otherwise Dawsey would have done the job himself along with the help of some of the players at the time. On this occasion though the team of groundsmen from Invertec who are doing a tremendous job on the pitch lent thier combined weight to solve a tricky problem over a period of several days. I said it wasn't easy.

The scaffolding was put around the posts.

And the hydraulic lift was employed.

Progress was slow as they huffed and they puffed but couldn't take the posts down.

Try as they might they weren't able to remove the posts, so reinforcements were the order of the day and the following day a tractor with a hydrolic lift was employed to do the job, just like the big bad wolf they couldn't blow the house down. So onto day two.

Now, we have the technology and the equipment to do the job.

That's better now we can finish the job and go home.

And it almost worked, but the descision was made to cut one of the posts at ground level to save further damage to the pitch as it was set in concrete.

Another post was found to be defective and therefore not able to be reused on the grounds of saftey.

So folks, you can now enjoy the R.M. 350 celebrations in full and we can look forward to a new set of posts or the new season, brilliant all round.

But the question now is what colour will they, be as the current trend seems to be that as we are now using a white ball rather than a brown one that was used when the posts were first painted white in order to show clearly when a kick was good or otherwise, the trend now seems to be towards the posts being painted in a red colour !! what do you think about this ?

This is the current veiw from the Real Ale bar towards the Midas marquee, nowhere is thier a set of posts to be seen folks.

looks very strange without posts
does anyone know what the new posts will be - ie international standard, or same as the old ones
Thanks for the photos - will be good to see the new ones next season

As I understand it at the present time no decisions have been settled on and I guess the club are still checking out what the options are.

The old posts were just less than 13 metres tall. From conversations I have had I believe the replacements will be made of aluminium and hinged for ease of maintenance. These posts come in various sizes up to 17 metres which is the full international standard. The price increases drastically for each extra metre. The tallest set is the ideal but the price would put them beyond what the club can realistically afford. So expect a set of 13 metre posts to appear soon after the RM 350.

Will the new set be a contracting colour to the white balls that are used? I think we should follow Saracens and have all red.

No objection to coloured posts, suggest if a 15 mtre posts are bought, we paint the top 3m red the middle section white and the bottom 3m green, but a colour we can recognise as green.
