World Rugby Junior World Championship 2026 Preview

Vusi Moyo (10) MOTM

By shipwrecked
June 25 2026

South Africa won the final last year in this annual competition (for obvious reasons) defeating New Zealand 23–15 MoM was Vusi Moyo (seen above tackling his Baby Blacks opposite number).   This year the World Rugby Junior World Championship is in Georgia and promises to outline the future of rugby in future years. The tournament kicks off Saturday, 27th June and the home nations will have a big say in who lifts the trophy at the final on 18th July. The competition has expanded to 16-teams. As normal in all these world competitions there is a “group of death” which unfortunately features England and Ireland. That is the brutal Pool C containing England and Ireland with Argentina and USA completing the group.

Of the home nations Wales must navigate a tough Pool A with defending champions South Africa, Georgia and Uruguay.
Scotland faces a monumental task in Pool B against New Zealand and Italy who have had possibly the most underrated u20 squad in recent years.

Favourites to compete in the final will clearly be South Africa (Baby Boks) and France.

The Baby Boks with their sheer size, scrumming power, and directness make them incredibly difficult to beat in tournament rugby.
France on the other hand have incredibly athletic and also some brutal forwards. Combine that with their traditional flair means they are serious contenders.

Concentrating on the home nations and reviewing the available talent in the press listed below are 3 identifiable talents for each nation.

England

Head Coach Andy Titterrell England bring physicality coupled with the tactical experience gained in the academies.

Connor Treacey: Our own Bath Rugby back-rower skippers the side. He is an exceptional leader at the breakdown, works immensely hard and carries with intensity.

Lucas Friday: The Harlequins scrumhalf returns for his second Junior World Championship. He has exceptional service and kicks tactically dictating England's tempo.

Tyler Offiah: The Bath Rugby winger is a lethal finisher. He has explosive pace and the ability to turn half-chances into tries.

Ireland

Head coach is Andrew Browne and leads a squad built on cohesive structures, handling, and a ruthless winning mentality.

Sami Bishti: A dynamic forward captains the national side. His exceptional work rate in the close-up exchanges makes him the heartbeat of the Irish pack.

Noah Byrne: The Leinster/Dublin University fullback is highly reliable under the high ball. He is a dangerous counter-attacking threat with a strong kicking game.

Charlie O’Shea: The Munster/UCC fly-half is a creative playmaker. He is known for executing sharp tactical flat-passes and stands up under heavy defensive pressure.
Another talented 10 to challenge Prendergast and Jack Crowley.

Scotland

Led by Fergus Pringle, the Scots rely on a combative, resilient forward pack alongside an unpredictable, dangerous backline.

Joe Roberts: The Glasgow Warriors academy hooker is an experienced returning veteran. He anchors the Scottish set-piece and has a deadly accurate lineout and tackles anything that moves! No doubt he will be throwing to the 6’10” Alfie Blackett who Bath inexplicitly let go!

Ross Wolfenden: The Edinburgh Rugby academy midfielder provides electric line-breaks. He acts as the chief distribution hub in Scotland’s backline.

Ollie Blyth-Lafferty: A powerhouse tighthead prop with invaluable experience from the 2025 tournament. He is a destructive scrummager and excels carrying the ball.

Wales

Richard Whiffin is developing a significant CV and has engineered an athletic Welsh team that thrives on transitions from solid defence into expansive wide attacks.

Deian Gwynne: The Gloucester back-rower is tipped as a prime candidate to break into the senior 2027 Rugby World Cup squad. He possesses elite turnover skills and supreme athleticism.

Tom Bowen: The Cardiff Rugby winger is an outright superstar in the making. He has already lit up the senior United Rugby Championship (URC) by scoring 5 tries in his opening block.

Steffan Emanuel: The ex-Bath and Cardiff Rugby centre brings physical authority to the midfield. He pairs an aggressive defensive hit with the technical skill to unlock outside backs. (He will also be alongside Bath’s new academy acquisition Bailey Cutts.

Tyler Offiah still U20 and mentioned in your summary SW, but not selected on merit or are there other reasons (injury / availability?).

I'm a little surprised at how few Bath players in that 23 considering how well they do most years in the various age grade comps.

Agree Matt but the u20s do tend to be about spreading the experience rather than picking the strongest team, so Zac Finch (of whom I know nothing) gets his first cap.

Italy 14 -19 Scotland HT, Really good game EOG offload led to an Italy try but Scotland on top with Italy coming back.
Rugby point sternum tackles seem to be dictating low tackling and as a result more offloads and fluid play.

Wales’ Caio James (7) forces his way over under the posts for a converted try.
Carwyn Leggat Jones (10) makes a deep break which results in Rhys Cummings 14 scoring wide out.
Georgia get one back out wide before Carwyn Leggat Jones lands a penalty.
Shioshvili huge Georgian no 8 drags a couple of Welshmen with him to score. Followed by some afters in a non-compromising game. Wales will have wind advantage second half and that is huge, line out throws being blown off course and on clearance form the Georgian 22 stops near the Wales dead ball line!

Extraordinary game with a dramatic ending.
To give some idea of the commitment from both side this is the incident that led to a Georgia yellow with 15 minutes left. It into the sun but there are actually 2 Georgia players in this pic taking out the Wales defender.

https://i.ibb.co/21fGx108/yellow-card.png

Wales squander 3 chances on the Georgian line after this incident and with an 8 point lead to Wales Georgia then surge back through their pack to score to make it Wales 25-24 Georgia and get yellow carded with 6 minutes to go.
Then Tom Bowen gets a second yellow for off side making it a red and Wales are reduced to 13. As the clock goes to 80' 15' Georgia carry multiple Wales players over the line but in the mass of bodies they were too powerful and the ball is held up.

Final score Wales 25-24 Georgia

Wasn't able to watch at the weekend. Is Treacey looking like he has the physical attributes to be a first team back row? I've always had a nagging feeling his best case scenario is a Miles Reid / Fitz Harding type which is nice if he gets there but downside is a player who doesn't quite have enough elite skills. If he's looking abrasive that's promising - just hope it translates.

Scotland can count themselves somewhat unlucky once again IMHO - their scrum had NZ on toast at times going back as quick as a Japanese Bullet - they failed to get any reward from the Argentinian referee.

A loss but that young front row gives the senior national team some serious hope for the future - the tight head is some serious player. I cannot recall a NZ scrum at any level (Except against SA) get properly "Stuffed" like that.

Difficult to judge as the temperature was 35C and nobody could seem to catch a ball for the first half including the lineout but both sides put in a shift around the field with some monster carries from both sides - the NZ first try came from a massive tackle on their own 10m line and a kick through and race to the ball for the scorer was ironically a lad who was born and brought up in Scotland and played for Scotland through the age groups including U18's only a year or so ago - yet at U20's he is turning out for the All Blacks - Seems so strange that at this level they can swop Countries when they want?

To be honest the front 5 played well as I said they absolutely destroyed the NZ scrum - how they were not rewarded I will never know - One of the commentators made the point that the NZ scrum half was feeding the ball so badly it was almost at the fly half's feet when he put it in - still the Argentinian referee let it go.....

A stronger team with Offiah, Winters and Treacey in from Bath. Two excellent fullbacks in Pearson and Pater.

Wales have got a massive task ahead of them but given the previous performancesI expect them to be competitive.

The side is dominated by the Cardiff academy with 2 Bath players Oscar Thomas and Alex Ridgway on the bench. Bailey Cutts unselected for this game. They will rely on Steff Emmanuel in the backs.

Wales Under-20s: Lewis Edwards (Ospreys); Rhys Cummings (Cardiff), Osian Darwin-Lewis (Cardiff), Steffan Emanuel (Cardiff), Tom Bowen (Cardiff); Carwyn Leggatt-Jones (Scarlets), Sion Davies (Cardiff); George Tuckley (Dragons), Tom Howe (Cardiff), Jac Pritchard (Scarlets), Will Evans (Scarlets), Tom Cottle (Cardiff), Deian Gwynne (Gloucester, capt), Caio James (Gloucester), Evan Minto (Dragons).
Replacements: Oscar Thomas (Bath), Dylan James (Ospreys), Yestyn Cook (Scarlets), Luke Evans (Exeter), Osian Williams (Bristol), Alex Ridgway (Bath), Cai Gealy (Bristol), Lloyd Lucas (Cardiff).

ll a bit chaotic, Treacey as skipper leads by example but to my mind needs to be more vocal and keep the team in line 15 captains out there. England playing like a bunch of schoolboys, which they are of course! Minutes to go England down to 13 , 9 points in it.

So Semi finals are South Africa vEngland and France v NewZealand on Monday 13th with lower placings on Sunday.

Frankly I don't know what to make of England, they have the individual players particularly in the backs but they just don't function.
Not sure about the 10s Keylock and Shields and everyone is going to disagree but Lucas Friday at 9 hasn't excelled.
Definitely need to sort out discipline and far too many voices on the pitch.

South Africa beat Wales but Wales were competitive so I think they are beatable, IF we get our act together.

SA are surely favourites but not much between France and NZ England are long shots I reckon.

Increasingly wondering if that's where his future is. Not tall for a second row and despite slimming down I'm not sure he's ever going to be a line out option so 8 may be a better fit for him.

Our long term plans in the row are still very much TBC but if he can translate his physical attributes to 8 there's massive promise there. Bit of a Nathan Hughes body type now? A job share with Green could be a really nice combo

I agree TRS he isn't the fastest No 8 but he is extremely difficult to stop metres from the line. At 6'5" I'm not sure he has the height for a second row. He clearly dominates this peers but he needs to show h can do it at the highest levels. Is he a Dombrandt, Earl, CCS, Pollock or Illione?

Does not solve the Bath second row conundrum for me.

Tough game in which we were up & doing well until crazy full red card by Kelly.
Blown away after that for 20 minutes then got stuck in again to make game of it. Lots of sore bodies so expect lots of changes for bronze medal match.
Treacy carries like a truck, doing lots of heavy work. Subbed on 55 mins. Offiah had quiet game apart from defending lots of attacks down his wing. Subbed too. Winters was busy under a barrage of high kicks & did well.

Totally moronic red card by Kelly; head butt on a prone player after the whistle. Expect a long ban; and he won't be featuring for Sale for a while.

But, overall, a very entertaining game. Treacy carries strongly. One for the future at Bath.
SA were far more aggressive at the breakdown. Deserved winners.

I only saw the Bath guy that played from England, so would be interested in views of the others.
Winters certainly seemed to be able to inject himself into the games from wing and looks big, powerful & fast.
Offiah seemed to be a step out of alignment with the team and just didn’t seem to get/make many opportunities, clearly a super athlete and what a leap he has.
Treacey looks solid if not exceptional at this level, when compared to other England u20s No.8s of the past, is 6 is real position or just a less showy 8? It will be interesting to see him get game time in the Prem Cup to see how he goes.

England lost the 3rd place playoff 41-26 but it was not decided until 78th minute. England got off to a great start with an exceptional Sam Winters try when from 10m out he carried Kiwi tacklers oft the try line with him.
I'd mentioned before that there were far too many voices on the pitch and this lead to a penalty for NZ from the KO and England were under the cosh for the next 15 minutes as a result.

Sam Winters then had a try chalked off having won the scintillating race with the outstanding kiwi 10 Cohen Norrie only to have been adjudged to have been beaten to the touchdown. Winters was to have a second try disallowed with Tongahuia adjudged to have blocked a defender when stationary, seemed incredibly harsh.

Tyler Offiah leapt to claim a try from a Shields kick then showed excellent height later on before clashing with the Kiwi 15 and took a heavy knock.

Bath have got both wing positions covered for several years with these two. I don't understand why Offiah wasn't given more ball.

Messy game England gave away too many penalties, Aiden Ainswotrth Cave was outstanding as was George Marsh at 8 (Connor Treacey did not feature).

All the Welsh Bath u20 players went well and the Wales u20 beat Australia and were inches away from claiming 5th place in the tournament. Alex Ridgway will look to challenge Connor Treacey I reckon and Bailey Cutts got game time but was edged out understandably by the Steff Emmanuel who was excellent.

Wales have an outstanding 10 in Carwyn Leggatt Jones who is on the same development pathway as James Linegar.
Trivia: Jake Dalziel (10) managed a 105 metre goal line dropout for Scotland. No Bath connection but pretty amazing! I think it surprised him as he was laughing to himself.

Enoch Opoku Gyamfi played several games for Italy mostly at second row and scored, he understandably dominates among his peers.

Our escaped lock featured for Scotland (Alfie Blackett) looks pretty decent, we missed out there.

Have to say SA and France have equally big heavy forwards like EOG but they hit everything hard and fast, that for me is the difference between to top teams.

Final point ALL the u20 games had a below sternum tackle law, there were few high table penalties (players have grown up with this law) and the game was noticeably faster with off loads.

My concern for him at Bath would be whether that is enough at Prem level given their stable of back rows that are just as talented or whether he will end up moving on like Khalik, Staddon (both now at Bristol). Fingers crossed he is able to take the step up.

Remember Lee Mears at hooker? He had to endure a long, patient apprenticeship behind Regan and Humphreys but ended up a long serving first teamer, international and Lion.
