NB: Next time I redo this, I'll push Cuckson back into the 3rd choice column - my error caused by not thinking when I shuffled Richards from lock to flank

Why? Ruaridh McConnochie has two England caps.

As far as I can tell Ruraidh hasn't actually been included in a Scotland match day squad, so technically I think he's still EQP.

Yes, he’s eligible for both teams but has actually played for England so listing him as English seems more logical to me.

The paragraph before the above

“ McConnochie earned his first full England cap against Italy in September 2019 and went on to score his first international try during the 2019 Rugby World Cup group stage win over the USA. Despite his early promise, he wasn't selected for England again after the World Cup, making him eligible to play for Scotland through his Scottish parents.”

So is he English or Scottish? Perhaps I should give him a 0.5 each!

9215

He’s eligible for both, same as many uncapped players, but counts as EQP for those quotas and has an English flag on his shirt so listing him as English makes most sense.

Very well done to those who have earned new contracts. Commiserations to those (quite a few) who did not and will hopefully stay in rugby and move on to other teams. I assume that these will also be announced in due course.

Echo that matt.

Bright futures for both those staying and moving on - as you say hopefully all the guys remain involved in the game in some way.

should be some clarification around who us leaving before the last home game.

I am not sure of the contractual status of the likes of parry, cordwell, Luke graham, short, weston, kirk, verden, mac graham, Al kareem.

Assume these guys are moving on to pastures new- annett, faiva, stewart, schreuder, rmc

Great news! Plenty of high potential players in that group.

Agree that it would be nice to get a confirmed list of academy leavers as well, from taking a look at our listed senior academy players on the website, the ones that aren't mentioned in this announcement are:

(Bold = assume will be retained/sign extensions)

Abdul-Khalik Akenzua Al-Kareem
Rory Crum
Josh Dingley (retired?)
Mackenzie Graham
Luke Graham
Charlie Griffin
Scott Kirk
Tyler Offiah
Will Parry
Vilikesa Sela (already extended)
James Short
Connor Treacy
Kepueli Tuipulotu
Raf Weston
Jack Woods

So I'm guessing we could have around ~10 leavers from the academy.

Also I liked that in the club's Instagram post announcing this they showed each player's international eligibility, only slight surprise was that Cuckson is listed as eligible for both England and Wales, given the state of the Welsh side it does make me wonder whether he might be a future target for one of the provinces.

Still not much of a sign of any trimming of the budget for next season given the cap doesn't go up and you've got £100K's incoming in those announced so far.

It'll be fascinating to see who the big money leavers are.
I'm thinking Coka and at least two others if the books are to balance.

We have signed 4 players (frost/van de linde/ arundell/carreras).

4 have already gone during the season (du plessis/erskine/dingley/grace).

Sure several others will get announced in the next few weeks including the likes of annett, faiva (italy international), graham, schreuder (south African international) , rmc (eng international).

Seem to take a huge interest in our wage bill paul.

You may be right about there being one or two 'surprise' big name departures, we shall see...all will be revealed etc.

I find the whole Salary Cap fascinating.
The management and complexity of it is bewildering and the planning involved is incredible.
I'm as interested in how Falcons manage on their £3.5m as Bath do on their £8m+ (including all allowances and marquee)

You've listed mainly peripheral squad players and even writing that they're Internationals doesn't change that you know they're low salary players.
Those players alone are unlikely to cut it which is why it's interesting to me which higher value players will go.

What I had stupidly forgotten was that you ofc have a guaranteed home SemiFinal. So there's still time for the club to announce which players are leaving and them to have a nice send off after that game.

Fair enough, that's typically key to when these things are announced.
Question for us this year is if we want that sort of distraction at a home SF if there's a couple of big names were relying on.
I would still expect so though

Yes.
Frost- Faiva and Annett known departures
van de Linde - Schreuder -expected departure:
the above equal out the wage bill.

Arundell - McConnochie departure. Probably equals out the wage bill- if not, does not require Bath to shed many to do so - could be from Faiva/Annett above.
Carreras- replaces Gallagher, who was not replaced at end of last season.

Where actually is the financial gap?

PG

You think Carreras and Gallagher would be on roughly the same salary?
Regardless, Gallagher might not have been replaced but as you're up to cap that money isn't sitting unused it's gone. That means the entirety of Carreras salary has to be balanced by leaving players.

It's certainly complex and bewildering.

So 4 players in , one of whom will be on good money (carreras), one on nothing likely the money some seem to assume (arundell) and 2 who will prob be as peripheral/ low salary as many of the leavers.

So not sure why 10-15 outgoings can't equate to 4 incomings but could be 1 or 2 bigger names to go as you say.

Seems an assumption that all the existing squad will be on deals going north. Spencer is rumoured to be taking a big hit for the security of a 3 year deal for example. Dunn and roux for example prob at the stage where every season is a bonus.

We aren't exactly in sarries territory when they had an absurd squad winning prems and Europe left, right and centre.

Do think next year will be a huge challenge - likes of stuart, tdt, finn off contract. Think this season and next are our big opp to win silverware and we have made a good start. .

Imagine most have already read this but its interesting:

1. Yes I do-roughly speaking.
2. "We spend up to the cap" is an objective (unlike some clubs who state that they will not), but it has been publicly explained that an amount is kept back for "contingencies". That way Bath were able to employ Lawrence and Hill when Worcester folded.
3. J du Plessis left early this season- he will not have come cheap so "balanced by leaving players" has almost certainly already happened.

PG.

Certainly some interesting takes on here.

Carreras and Gallagher on the same money.
Your club Captain and one of your consistently best players will be taking a salary of £250K? for a number of seasons.
Jacques du Plessis a journeyman SA lock was on good money.
Arundell's salary could be very reasonable if it's with a nod and a wink from England.
I've no idea what Bath spend overall but you're doing very well if you got much of a contingency with your current squad.

Interesting to read about your loan arrangement with Wuss for next season too. I'm guessing they probably won't get first dibs on Lawrence and Hill but nice to have the connection.

Best value in your entire operation is definitely your S&C.
There's always elements of fortune in player management and injuries but they've done an exceptional job the past two years.

PH there are implications that go above and beyond ‘interesting’ why not wait until all movements are announced rather than cast aspersions on posters who are trying to explain the points you are making.

There have now been a plethora of explanations now rationalising our current squad makeup. It’s time to be patient and wait and see rather than guesses and speculation.

I... don't think you really know what salary numbers are at all do you? Average scrum half salary for the prem last year was £121k [archive.ph]

Yes, Spencer will be on more, but 250k for three years when he'll be 36 at the end of it is completely reasonable. It's well known that Spencer re-signed on reduced terms.

You've asked how players can be brought in (all four of them) and you've been clearly answered. Not sure what your point about Wuss is at all (which, btw, is just a comment made by the Wuss DoR in a fans forum, no one knows what it actually is).

You seem very bitter. Could we have Old Marovian back instead, please?

Indeed hasta, does seem a bit bitter and I also miss the input of OM.

Appears keen for someone to follow sarries on to the salary cap cheats naughty step.

My thoughts (to be ridiculed)....

Seems absolutely feasible to me for someone to take a longer contract at reduced terms in the twilight of their career and 250k/Yr for 3 seasons is hardly pocket change.

Interesting take on jdp- can't think of many average players who have over 100 appearances for montpellier. He was v good for us in his limited appearances. Could easily believe he was on c200k + ie similar or more than arundell.

Arundel is 22 yrs old and hasn't been getting a look in for racing who are a bit of a mess yet c200k isn't feasible to tempt him back to his home club!?

Literally no idea what the wuss dig is all about but keep grinding that axe.....

Anyone know what happened to Old Marovian? He stopped posting on the Sarries board at the same time I think - hope he is OK.

Faiva won't have been in this years cap. Jacques Du Plessis played 16 mins of 1 Prem game so unfortunately I think he is?

Telegraph reported Arundell coming back for £190k a season which I would expect is considerably less than Joe C but more than Grace and Ruaridh McConnochie?

No idea what Gallagher will have been on but he was not playing regularly for Munster (511 mins in 20/21 and 358 mins in 21/22) so I would guess pretty cheap. He played a lot for Bath so I would imagine that his next contract would have been a lot more (hence the move alongside Italian aspirations?).

Anyway, Bath aren't just going to sign a load of new people without considering whether they fit under the cap, so I have no concerns about this. Expect to see a fair number leave / released across the whole squad though.

Whoever wins the Premiership is subject to enhanced scrutiny with regards to the salary cap including communications between club, plays and agents. This is all well known and has been for some time, so it would be exceedingly stupid for any club to break the salary cap as is clearly being implied. It would of course be interesting to know what the contract values of all players are and be able to see how the books balance, but that is not the reality at present, so the Salary Cap Manager has to be trusted.

I think in the round because of the excellent academy set up we now have, we are in a good place. We have 4 new signings, two of whom are likely to be expensive. To balance that we could afford to lose up to 8 existing senior players (including JdP, Faiva, Schreuder, Annett, McConnochie) replacing the other 4 with academy promotions.
We don't need a big signing to replace JdP, Richards is more than ready to step up.
We could probably afford to lose one of Stuart/TdT/Griffin. (I suspect Griffin in particular is desperate for more first team game time).
Across the back row, with Staddon, Cowan & Green challenging the magnificent 7, we could afford to lose one or two. No idea who though.
With long term injuries to Lawrence & Harris, there's much less slack in the backs.
To keep those next generation players like Sela, Tuipulotu, Bennett, Jeanes, Green, Hennessy, Emens, Donoghue, & Offiah they have to see a route to the first team or they will leave.

I think that there is a while before some of these guys will be insisting on first team rugby - most are 18-21 years old. The Worcester loan tie up would help with this.

Donoghue is a bit older and just signed a new long term contract, but - in any event - he is actually getting plenty of first team rugby.

I’ve always found the comments about Salary Cap funny. No one in their right mind can actually think a club would even try go a pound over with what’s happened to Sarries.

The Carreras signing is in light of losing a fair bit of depth there.

In 2 years we will have lost in the back three:
- GHW
- Goss
- Gallagher
- Owen
- Mcconochie
- Grace

Replacing them with
- Arundell
- Carreras

Hookers the same have been thinned down
Leaving
- Doughty
- Faiva
- Annett
With only Frost Joining

Lots expecting that some big names will leave. Namely Cokansiga, but that won’t be happening.

What I believe the leavers list will be

- Stewart
- Annett
- Faiva
-Schreuder
- M Graham
- L Graham
- I Davies

Can’t see too much movement anywhere else. Maybe lose one of Cordwell or Verden but seems silly to when they have had such success in prem cup and coming into the prop prime. Cordwell especially at Looshead.

There will be more than that, for sure - some have already gone but not announced yet, assume last home game. Verden is a tighhead and with Sela coming through I wouldn't have thought he would play.

Unless we've got any more big surprises, then the only editting SHOULD be anyone graduating from academy to senior (I've counted Tuipolotu - but that's more because I've only got enough space for 3 players in any position in the academy). As we near the end of 24/25 we can pretty much be certain of our 23 for the Bristol game compared to the squad who lost at home earlier in the season.
Out: Underhill, Coetzee, Schreuder, Lawrence, Mc Connachie, Harris, Redpath (?)
In: Bayliss, Barbeary, Carr-Smith, Ojomoh, Cokanasiga, Muir, Donoghue

Don't know the situation regarding Redpath, if not fit, Butt will keep place I think.

Despite the obvious losses I feel we are in a good place with the changes and good enough to beat Bristol.

England star Ollie Lawrence 'ahead of schedule' following horror Achilles injury

Bath head of rugby Johann van Graan has revealed England star Ollie Lawrence is “ahead of schedule” on his injury return after months on the sidelines.

The powerhouse centre suffered a horrific Achilles injury on Test duty during the Six Nations and was set to be out until December, but this admission could give both Bath and England fans hope of a quicker return to the field.
