Big Start Needed - Rae

ALEX Rae admits his new-look Jersey side will have to hit the ground running, after a breakthrough season for the club in the Greene King IPA Championship last year.

Having narrowly beaten the drop in 2013, Harvey Biljon’s side took a huge leap forward last term, finishing seventh in the Championship table after notable wins over eventual champions Worcester Warriors, Titans Rugby, and a league double over Nottingham.

But despite the improvement, Biljon has rung the changes at St. Peter in the off-season, with 14 new arrivals already at the club as they prepare to mount a charge on the top half of the table.

And skipper Rae believes that while it can be tricky to integrate such a large number of new faces into the squad, the recruits will soon understand what pulling on a Jersey shirt is all about.

“I’m very excited already for next year,” he said. “We’ve got a big turnaround of players coming into the side and that presents a number of challenges.

“Spending time with each other is key, and while it doesn’t happen overnight, one of the unique things about being at Jersey is that strong bonds are formed a lot quicker than elsewhere because of the travelling and all the boys doing everything together.

“They have all brought a freshness to the side and there is a different kind of buzz around training.

“Everyone is keen and desperate to prove themselves, so the guys who have been around the squad for a while have a journey to go on as well.

“The people here are very passionate about Jersey, and it almost feels like you are representing a country rather than a city or a town.

“You only have to be on the island for a week to realise that. It’s fantastic to have those kinds of fans behind us, and hopefully the new guys will see it soon enough.”

Rae is the first to admit that the side enjoyed last season’s campaign a lot more than the one that came before, without the pressures of battling at the foot of the Championship table.

And the 29-year-old lock is confident that if Jersey’s old hands can instil some of the same self-belief into the new boys, the side will be destined for success next season.

He added: “The season just gone we enjoyed our rugby a lot more – it was very stressful the season before when we were battling at the bottom of the table.

“We had a change of coach and a change of a few players, and then it was almost like the penny dropped.

“We started to find a way to win games and see where our strengths and weaknesses were, especially at home.

“The fans could see how much it meant to us to play for the shirt, and really got behind us.

“We improved so much from the season before and started to play with a bit of freedom, scoring a lot of tries, and the confidence grew and grew.

Formed in 2009, the Greene King IPA Championship is the second tier of professional rugby union in England. To keep up-to-date with all the latest news follow @ChampRugby on Twitter, or visitwww.rfu.com/championship

Morning !

Greetings from Cornwall.

Nice to see you guys back !

I think you'll find its pretty slow around many of the boards at the moment.

BTW..Who was the muppet who made Pirates/Jersey the Christmas game? What chance have you guys got of getting over then?

No chance of Mrs C letting me make this one CB and I don't miss many matches. There is no flight to Exeter on Sunday morning and the only way I could have made it was by getting the early flight on Boxing Day and then trying to get back on the Monday. I wouldn't dare whisper the idea in Mrs C's presence as an occasional wearer of glasses I need a functional pair of ears to keep them on my head. Let me know if you are coming over in September as we have plenty of room in St Ouen. all the best cc
