Bath will be hoping for a miracle away at Northampton Saints on Sunday. Where the troubled once prayed to the saints for divine intervention, as devout Catholics do to this day, Bath will be desperate for salvation from the Saints. On their last outing Northampton’s forward power and aggression earned them an away win at Sandy Park. That same weekend Bath suffered a sending off and further injuries in stuttering to unconvincing victory. It seems a devil of a humiliation awaits at Franklin’s Gardens.
Six Nations calls have been comparatively kind to Northampton. They lose only Lawes to England and Biggar to Wales, while Scots squad members Craig and Hutchinson remain available to them. Bath will be without Obano, Stuart, Ewels and Watson in England’s bubble, Faletau to Wales and now, potentially Bayliss and Bhatti to Scotland, if their match does not fall prey to a Covid cancellation. Both will probably be released back to Bath, but too late to take part in much club training. With an already lengthy injury list Bath have to make do without Williams (four week suspension) and probably Rokodoguni (shoulder injury) and will anxiously await medical reports on Ben Spencer, McConnochie and De Glanville. On availability alone the balance of power, as well as home advantage sits squarely with Northampton.
Saints built their win over Chiefs at a muddy Sandy Park on the strength of their set piece. Their powerful scrum embarrassed the Exeter eight and their well drilled responses frustrated Exeter’s close quarter driving mauls and pick and go. Indeed, Saints registered a score of their own to “out Chief the Chiefs” before hassling their opponents into mistakes and taking the penalty chances. In Ribbans, Ratuniyarawa, Isiekwe and Ludlam they have the core of muscle and bustle to overwhelm what is likely to be another makeshift Bath eight. Sometimes over reliant on Biggar, Saints are nonetheless well equipped with decision makers. Mitchell at scrum half favours a high tempo game to keep the opposition back pedalling and outside him Francis, Furbank, Mallinder and Procter are all versatile, heads up backs adept at distribution, tactical kicking or the timely line break. With Tuala, Sleightholme or Naiyaravoro lurking out wide to strike, it could be a long afternoon for Bath if they are forced to field a callow squad.
Selection this week will present Stuart Hooper and Neal Hatley with more headaches once again. They must balance rushing experienced players back from injury against fielding a squad of fringe and Academy players. In addition to the international absences and injuries above will be concern over Elliott Stooke’s drink driving court case this week. With the lock cupboard even more bare through Bayliss’ Scotland call up, the big man’s power and determination would be a welcome boost if he is able to play. Tom Ellis should be, after coming through against Gloucester in one piece, but the coaches would probably prefer him in his normal place in the back row. Fans will hope Josh McNally’s absence through leg injury last week was more precautionary than mid to long term.
As last weekend showed, the suspension of relegation has not blunted Bath’s desire to win and doubtless the coaching team will want to see their squad compete for playoff and top European places at season’s end. However, survival this season does offer chances for experiment and player development. At some point this weekend I would like to see Tian Schoeman in his favoured position. Are Du Toit and Gray now up to speed and, if so, should they get a try out? There will be other fringe players pressing for places, hoping to emulate the sterling efforts of Reid and Bayliss, among them Vaughan at prop, Green at scrum half and Wright in the centre. It is too early to say who will be fit and available, so team prediction must be delayed until the press notes or a fitness update.
It looks as if Bath’s backs will be to the wall whatever twenty three they field. What hope do they have therefore? The mini revival of the past two matches has been built on spirit, aggressive defence and ability to seize a half chance. There are welcome signs of willingness to counter attack and play heads up rugby. The ease with which Saints repelled Chiefs forwards in goal line sieges sounds a warning. Repetitive pick and drive will be too predictable, too easily dealt with. Given Bath’s backline talent, why not heed Cameron Redpath and spend the week practising strike moves to exploit the space once the first or second drive has narrowed the defence?
As well as spirit, Bath have developed an enviable ability to ride their luck. Will that be enough on Sunday? Probably not. I still think they will need a miracle.
Not surprised there is no proposed team selection PG! All a bit of a nightmare trying to work out who is banned, who is injured, who is on international duty and who is on form!
BT sport previewed this match last week by stating the we had a tricky match coming up against Staines ........... if only it was!

9 day turnaround hopefully helps spencer get through the return to play protocols.
Looks like the 18 ye olds richards and staddon may need to be involved again. Is merigan available?
May start Ellis at lock? With bayliss if available? Ouch. Seriously need at least one of mcnally and spencer back. Guess they may play stooke, I wouldn't.
I had assumed gh-w was injured during/after bris as vanished off the radar after making a better of it than most others.
P G Tips What’s up with Du Toit Malco?
Thought Joe C was fir too.
PG
Du Toit will only just have passed his Covid protocols and may well not be up to speed yet.
Cokanasiga has been theoretically fit to play for a couple of weeks now but just seems hopelessly out of sorts for some reason. It could be that he is still carrying a niggle or it could a matter of confidence or it could be...something else.
Saints fan here . I do feel for you guys with the amount of players missing . Saints are massive favourites to win this weekend but stranger things have happened in sport . If your pack can front up with Spencer at 9 if he plays well you could win. Im just glad your first choice props are not involved . They always seem to destroy our scrum more than anyone else .
Postponement of France v Scotland should mean the immediate release of Bhatti and Bayliss. They will have maximum one day to train with the squad for the match but, given our threadbare forward resources I expect that Hoops and Hats will wish to play them.
Certainly not my favourite officials and unlikely to help our cause but we know at the start of the season who is likely to be picked for their country and all teams have to cope with injuries.
Its is an odd season, all sorts of strange results, home advantage is not what it usually is and Northampton will not have their full first choice team, so we have to accept if we get beaten it is by the better team rather than for other reasons.
This is brilliant reminds me of playing lower league club rugby and trying to find 15 players of the Saturday ! Hoops is having a ring around seeing who can get back from uni. Maybe one of the Saints players will swap for game.

Have they lent us Matavesi, or are there 2 brothers?

Quite glad to see a bit of rotation - Spencer and Dunn have earned a rest. Also makes sense for Ellis to move into the second row and allow Bayliss to play in his best position. Will be interested to see if Schoeman can help RP out with playmaking to add a bit of extra width. It's a slightly less hamstrung side than it looked as if it was going to be. If we can go up to Sale and front up, then no reason why we can't do it at the Gardens!
Calls for rotation have (partly) been answered with starts for Walker, Roko and Chudley when Dunn, Spencer and McConnochie are fit enough for the bench- or do they represent a bare cupboard and desperation.
Roko seems to have made a miraculous recovery.
Good to see my adoptee get another turn at captaincy.
Thats about as good as we at Saints can get out with injuries and international duties.
Young Freeman at 15 is an exciting prospect and had a short term injury
Slieghthome can feel a bit aggrieved not to be starting, as a cross between Nowell/Brown but much faster
Furbank at 10 is an interesting one, as learning the position, so expect the unexpected, it could be a rollercoaster ride for both sets of fans
With Mitchell at England, James gets the nob, who joined us from Donacaster at start of season.
We do tend to rotate our front row, we are starting which is potentially our strongest scrummaging front row.
We have no established 8, s both are injured.
Looking forward to see Mallinder get more game time, the guy has soooo much potential and just oozes class, but since his debut some years ago now, apart from a viral infection that kept him out for months, he has been struck down by bad injuries' so just hope he gets through the end of this one in tact!

Seriously disappointed in this. A major failure of leadership that shows that all talk of values and building a culture is just empty rhetoric. Weak, amoral and a terrible indictment of the way our club is now run.

The way I see it, Hooper may as well have just sent this memo out to Academy and age group players.
Dear {name}
As you may have seen Stooky has been a bit of a naughty boy.
He ignored Covid protocols, a few days before one of the biggest games of the season at a time when we are badly short of players he went to see JJ with a bloke from the club he is joining at the end of the season, they sat up all night drinking and then crashed his car when drunk with Waspie chap in the passenger seat.
I just want you to understand that I'm cool with all of this. Stooky will go straight back into the team for Northampton after a little slap on the wrist. So, just to be clear, you can safely ignore everything that we have been telling you for weeks about the need to be behave professionally, you can pretend covid doesn't exist, you can sit up all night drinking and commit serious criminal offences that involve endangering the lives of innocent people and not only will you suffer no meaningful punishment, you'll be straight back in the team at the first opportunity.
ballsout Been discussed to death. Moving on...
Saints starting with their strongest front row is probably for the best. Bit gutted by both teams, was hoping to see Hill earn some more air miles.
Totally agree, lets move on. TBF to Hill he looks too of improved since Beno gave him a aerial view of Bath.

I suspect the coaches wanted to avoid throwing an inexperienced academy lock into a big match alongside a flanker. Had McNally or Spencer been available I think they would have been picked ahead of Stooke.
Looking forward to see how Tian Schoeman goes at full back.
I have to say I am with Malco on this selection. I wouldn't have cast Stooke aside, I would have kept him in the squad for training and in the bubble but made a point that he was not going to play at the 1st opportunity. It sends the right message to do that.
A shame TdG is injured but at least we benefit from the Scotland postponement.

It sends a message, but only the right message if you agree with it. I think the message that the law of the land governs breaches of the law is the right one.
Bit disappointed re stooke. Surprised how many people seem to have the opinion of 'well we have some second row absentees so let's just be pragmatic '.
You are either serious about building a culture or you aren't. Just doesn't match up with the type of character I thought hoops was and his rhetoric. I am not convinced we would have taken the same course if 2 of mcnally, ewels and spencer had been available which isn't great. I may be wrong on that, if so fair enough.
I guess none of us have the full story of how its all played out but if the overriding driver has been to try and improve our chances of sneaking a lbp in a season with no relegation then I find that disappointing.
It is more than being pragmatic or chasing a lbp in this case. Playing an academy lock next to a relatively lightweight flanker against the likes of Ribbans and Ratuniyarawa could risk injury and potentially seriously dent confidence in a young man.
BathIron It is more than being pragmatic or chasing a lbp in this case. Playing an academy lock next to a relatively lightweight flanker against the likes of Ribbans and Ratuniyarawa could risk injury and potentially seriously dent confidence in a young man.
Not to mention the increased risk to our second choice front row facing their first choice front row.
We didn't struggle that badly with a 6 and a 7 at lock against glos.
We really should be able to trust schoeman, walker and judge to be competent- all very experienced.
I acknowledge your point (though richards and staddon have both played for the firsts already). Kind of highlights the idiocy of stooke. He broke covid laws, drank and then drove, crashed....all at a time where we were seriously short of options in his position. If he is off at the end of the season we don't owe him a huge amount or have a longer term relationship to manage.
Tbf hoops is on record as saying ideally you introduce academy guys at optimum time which isn't now so completely understand your argument. My worry with hoops is he only seems to blood them due to lack of availability so it doesn't make all that much sense.

He does seem to be averse to risks where selection is involved, his caution actually ends up with him having to do exactly what was trying to avoid. A few hole showing in the overall future development plan at the moment from my point of view. They need to be patched by big team performances.

Don't get me wrong, if one of Richards and Staddon are strong 'scrummaging' locks and are due a game in the development pathway, then I would have no problem with the club dropping Stooke for his stupidity.
Have to trust hoops and hats i guess, if they don't think richards/staddon are up to it given all the circumstances of weakened pack etc then fair enough. I just hope that's the driver and they are safeguarding those guys development/fitness rather than prioritising the result over principle.
Staddon and richards have played lock a lot together but no idea who is the more of a scrummager, playing on the tighthead side. Possibly richards? Staddon seems more earmarked for 6?

If there was still relegation this season I would be more questioning of the motives behind picking Stooke!
charlieboa True. Had been looking at it the other way in terms of even less reason to pick him but its a good point looking at it in reverse.
Blimey, what's going on? Two people with different views discussing things rationally and acknowledging each others points of view! This'll never catch on.
I'm not happy about Stooke being in the team for Saints but frankly, unsurprised. There was a day a few years ago when much was made of senior players being role models for the younger generations - however, that seems to have gone out of the window. Then, he would have been quietly made to stay at home and keep his head down.
However, didn't realise that Nick Auterac was now at Saints - thought he went to Sarries - but obviously moved on. Saints are improving. Just hope it isn't an embarassing walkover.

Auterac came from Sarries, went to Quins and has moved on to Saints in short order. A hugely talented player who has failed to reach his potential because, I was told, he became over-obsessed with making himself huge in the gym rather than focusing on core technical skills.

charlieboa There was a point during his first 2 seasons at bath that I thought he was destined for great things. Shame
When he first arrived at Bath I really thought I was looking at someone who would become a guaranteed first pick for England. He went very rapidly backwards after he picked up a nasty injury and then spent very long hours in the gym rehabbing. It seems that the gym obsession overtook all else.
CharlieBoA Bit disappointed re stooke. Surprised how many people seem to have the opinion of 'well we have some second row absentees so let's just be pragmatic '.
For me it’s absolutely nothing to do with how many locks we’ve got fit. The legal system has given their verdict and punishment and from a rugby perspective the player has been banned for his COVID breach. What on earth gives Bath the right to impose their own secondary justice ? Hooper has this spot in for me.

Fair enough. Nice and straightforward view (maybe I am overthinking it).
Clubs do have decisions within their control every single game of who they do and don't select. perfectly within their rights to not select him.if a player acts irresponsibly by putting in a terrible weeks training, going on the p*ss in the week, not mentoring and being a role model for younger players etc etc etc etc. They 'impose justice' based on behaviours via selection every single game.
Agree to disagree. Understand and respect your opinion completely.

P G Tips My comment -on the harder task - was purely a rugby one.
I happen though, to agree with Beergoggles. Bath Rugby have the same view as he does it seems -and that is their right.
PG
Completely agree about the harder rugby task and on it being the clubs right.
Just personally feel its short termist and ill judged but completely understand differing views and let's face it none of us know the full story.
He crashed his car driving home in the very early hours. He had been drinking for some hours at another team mates house thus breaking the Covid regulations, into the night. He was breathalysed. He has been charged with drunk driving or whatever the legal term is. (Mercifully, no-one was hurt).
PS, He is paid a great deal of money on a conract to keep himself healthy and fit to be able to train and play as a professional rugby player for Bath Rugby.
How much more do you want?
Hooper (et al) gone down another few notches in my people to respect graph.
This is my final word on this matter as both a member of the legal profession and a Bath FC supporter. What has been done has been done.
Personally for me what I find disappointing in society and on here is how many appear to dismiss driving over the legal limit as a misdemeanour. Let me be perfectly blunt - it is not and it is a serious offence. There are many innocent victims who tragically lay bare to this fact and some very brave people have voiced their personal tragedies on this forum.
A motor vehicle is a dangerous weapon/item and if abused or not handled correctly it is a lethal weapon. So if anyone on here thinks that substance misuse does not affect your decision making you need to go and spend some time with some of the grieving relatives who are victims of such actions.
Elliot has apologised for his behaviour and the courts have dealt with the matter - so as far as the legal side of the issue it is over. We then come to the morale obligation - the club - Everyone deserves to a fair hearing and to move on - in this case thank god no one was injured, the club has an unwanted recent history concerning substance abuse - that is an issue for Bruce Craig to deal with, we as fans can all but continue to support our team and if Elliot is in the team we have a simple choice support the team or not support the team simple.
My main issue and it will remain my main issue is with those who do not accept the seriousness and consequences of driving a Mechanically propelled vehicle whilst under the influence of a substance.
Back to the game - COYB.

Walker really is absolutely useless! What good has he EVER done in a Bath shirt?! As for Tom Ellis... I've never played in the 2nd row but I DO know that if you take both your hands off one player in a maul and place both hands immediately onto another player in full line of sight of (particularly THIS) ref, you will be pinged for changing your bind. Ergo, not rocket science but OBVIOUSLY beyond the grasp of Bath forwards!!!!
I'm not confident enough to watch Bath live yet & having checked the score I'm glad I didn't. On paper we looked to have put out a reasonable team so why are we incapable of scrummaging & executing the lineout to reasonable standard without giving away penalties & being incapable of putting up any sort of defence? The performances against Sale & Gloucester looked as if we had stabilised things. Why on earth have we gone into reverse like this? Unfortunately I won't be watching it unless there is an amazing turnaround!

On paper this is an awful mismatch.
We are missing our first and second choice looseheads, our first choice tight head, four of our five locks, our first choice open side, our first choice number 8 and our first choice hooker is on the bench.
If we were getting anything like parity in scrum and lineout it would be an absolute miracle.

That is true but its not as if the players we are left with are raw academy players. They have all played to a decent standard in past matches have they not?

For all of you that turned off you just missed the best 45 mins I've seen a bath team play for a long long time. Every one of them were superb. Also credit to the coaching team for whatever was said at half time and for really good use of the subs bench.
A completely different side in the second half. Big scrums under pressure right at the end. The bench made all the difference. A very good win given we were as good as done after half hour and 19-3 down
3 wins on the trot with loads of players missing. Says a lot of positive things about the team spirit, the team selection and coaching. Today was the best win of the three because we had to come bach from 16 points down.
Very happy now after watching the dross that England served up yesterday.
Any thoughts about protecting the likes of Ewan Richards and Ethan Staddon should bin those ideas straight away, Muir McConnachie Dunn and Reid excellent and Priestland's boot!

That is incredible. I will really enjoy watching this back. I do remain puzzled why we started so disastrously. I don’t think our lineup was so poor as has been suggested but we were certainly missing a good many first choice players which makes this win so creditable.
If anyone doubted the team spirit then that should prove a few people wrong.
Yes the first half wasn’t good, but the way the replacements changed the game it’s as if someone thought about the full 80 minutes and to have the stronger front row and better scrum half later in the game.
Well done Rhys, thought he was brilliant today, I think we really will miss him when he is gone.
I’m sorry, but I struggle to see what Walker has done wrong to say he’s rubbish. He may not be as aggressive as Dunn, but he goes about his job and I don’t worry when he’s in the team compared to some people.
The defence needs working on still, but to turn that around with the players missing was an exceptional result.
Congratulations to Hoops and the coaches, small steps, but three on the bounce. We wont win next week so ready for all the Hooper out brigade to start again, but I for one think it’s a long term plan and want us to retain the faith.
I really enjoy supporting Bath, they seem to be playing for each other and their coaching team(still long way to go) not sure every supporter gets the same enjoyment when denied an agenda.
Lovely walk in the sunshine up above Bathford today. Only topped by getting home for the last 10 minutes. Get in! Someone at Saints should be getting a pasting for not kicking sticks on the last penalty.
So much good to unpack (from 38 minutes onwards) but special mention for Staddon who made a big impact. Big future ahead if aged 18 he can turn in a performance like that.
We rode our luck today, but for sheer second half guts and character alone deserved the win.
First line defence still too easily pierced but our scramble and last ditch defence was most impressive. A few signs too of heads up rugby - especially McConnochie, Dunn, Mercer, Muir and Spencer.
Rhys has gone from scapegoat to hero in a few matches- some really good stuff from him.
Can someone please tell me who got MOTM? Had to switch off straight after the whistle.
I didn’t watch today’s game as I was out enjoying the sun with the children, but with the side we put out away from home that was a very impressive result. Nice work Bath!

Also our first up defence (or our system or whatever) may be woeful. They cut us apart at will in first 30.
But our scramble defence was unreal. Must’ve held them up over the line a couple of times, Muir forcing a knock on from Ludlum, Spencer’s tackle on Naiyaravoro and stopping Proctor... brilliant effort that relies on guts and determination. No lack of spirit in this team.
Spencer tho. Saved two certain tries, set up one, snaffled a turnover at the base of a scrum too. What an impact the bench had, but what work from the likes of Reid and Mercer.

Interesting, Rhys Priestland thinks this is probably the best win he has been involved in(ever) and puts it down to the team sticking to the script when under pressure.

For all of those bemoaning the lack of team spirit take another look at that second half.
That says a lot more than all of the Hooper must go he’s lost the dressing room merchants. I’ve always been a fan of Rhys he makes the most of his talents and his kicking game is always spot on.
I think we still have a lot of issues with our second string being nowhere near as good as our first but we had a plan and played to it.
plong Sadly, part of me wants this to be a 60-70 point tanking to force Craig into making an overdue decision!!!
Couldn’t disagree with that sentiment.
Your comments now would be appreciated!
Can't say my mind has changed from this comment much... The first 30mins was abject (19-3 down with commentators stating what the current season's quickest bonus point time is!).
Had we played against a ruthless team also in form, the score could very well have been in excess of 60-70 points.
You may appreciate these honest thoughts wetside, but I am extremely disappointed that we have fallen so far that I have cause to state them!!!
Let's never let the truth get in the way of opinion plong
Saints had just won 4 on the bounce including beating the current champions at Sandy Park. What more form do you want from a team.
I know a lot of people don't rate hopper and want him to fail but the spirit shown by a squad with 10 or more 1st choice players in the last 3 weeks suggests he may be doing something right.

RP played very well, almost as if he has been liberated, obviously his kicking was excellent..............but as the record shows we rather expect that.
But watch our runners go and make ground...........AND LOOK LIKE THEY ARE ENJOYING IT!!!!!
I am sure there will be loads of comments above saying Saints had chances that they didn't take, Bath were lucky etc, etc.
However as the commentators said this will bring a ton of confidence into the Bath game............and all done with a ton of players missing.

"Had we been playing against a ruthless team in form". Plong I think that's exactly what we were playing against which is why it was such a good win. Did you see last weeks game against Chief's? You do realise they have won their last 4 including the last two being Chiefs and Wasps away.
That was an enormous win in a fixture that has never been a happy one for us for a decade or so.
Priestland, Mercer, Reid, Stooke (yes even him), all had very sound games, as did the reserves bench when they came on.
I love the passion Zach shows, and whilst I don’t think he’s the most flamboyant flyhalf in the world, I seriously hope whoever we promote to replace Rhys can kick as well as he does.
Onwards and upwards!

My view hasn’t changed and I didn’t watch the game so what do you want me to say?
OB when was the last Bath game you watched?
The last game Boris allowed me to go to the Rec.
OB how can you possibly be so critical of Hoops and the rest of the coaching team if you haven't watched a Bath game for 12 months. There's more to coaching and developing a squad than just mere results. To be honest I think that makes your opinion pretty valueless.
That Nyarb.... Nyarobor..... Niarov....... that big Saints winger looked like he was going to score a brilliant solo try before Spencer took his legs away at full pelt. Terrific tackle!

Nothing matters to me except winning games and in the process winning trophies, the style of play and the “club culture” is irrelevant.
Bath are 10th at present, now you might be satisfied (and I respect your view) but it doesn’t work for me.
Anyway probably best to leave my view to another thread on another day so you can all enjoy the result today.
OB if all that matters is winning games you should be the happiest person on this board as we have just won 3 on the bounce including the form team of the prem (saints). Sale away one of the hardest away games and our local rivals Gloucester.
Doesn't get much better than the last 3vweeks if all you care about is winning games.

I'm afraid you didn't read my post carefully enough, WBC - note I said 'ruthless'. as well as 'in form'.. Had we been playing Salarycens of old, or poss Exe from last 1-2 seasons, do you think the scoreboard would have stopped ticking over in the Home column from 19-3 onwards? I don't think so. Saints took their foot off the throat, allowing us to fight our way back into it. My main point is that we are far too often digging the hole in which we find ourselves, only to (sometimes!) find a way to get out of it... usually due to mindless penalties, sub-standard defending or inability to hold onto the ball or kick well...

Why does it have to be then them taking the foot off. Have you considered we perhaps forced it off or doesn't that fit with your irrational desire to see Hooper replaced.
Some people on here are unable to acknowledge any improvement.
I think that most of the criticism of Hooper is completely illogical. The sort of comments mentioned above can at various times be directed at most teams in the Premiership. It is incredibly topsy turvy. Some DOR’s & head coaches are currently on the up, some the reverse and that happens throughout the season. Our forward pack & defence has taken a lot of flack recently but the coach responsible has a tremendous reputation & he rarely receives criticism. The attack has underperformed for years but the coach responsible is being replaced , presumably by the DOR. What has been fantastic in recent matches has been the attitude, perserverence & team spirit shown by Bath. If anything, this is the responsibility of the DOR. He is also responsible for recruitment & he hasn’t done badly with Muir & McConnaghie, much criticised on here. As Mercer said at the end “This win just shows the spirit in the group” The other thing is where are you going to find the perfect DOR. There are very few Pat Lams about!

Well said. And if there were another Pat Lam although our cheque book is big I don't feel it would be big enough. It's not just about his pay but being able to commit to building the best training facilities in the country and spending £1.6mill a year on two players.
Looking at it from another view point, maybe our completely rubbish coaching set up had watched the opposition, identified stuff and then decided to leave the better front row, better scrum half, and Ruaridh on the bench knowing we would be stronger at the end with those players when Saints would be tired or playing the second choice.
At the end of the day it’s a squad game, and you have to know you will have periods during the 80 minutes when the opposition are dominant. Maybe they had accepted that they would be under the cosh first half and trusted themselves to win the second half.
Whatever was said or done at half time worked. Well done Hoops, Hats etc

For me our best performance of the season. I know this sounds strange given how poorly we defended in the first 30 minutes and how easily our lineout and scrum where taken apart in the first half. However, 3 big pluses for me: (i) attacking game starting to become evident, (ii) in other games we would have cracked at 17-3 and lost by 30-40 but at critical times the leaders stepped forward and the entire 23 showed belief and (iii) lastly we closed out a game with good decision making which has been a rare commodity for us.

Not having watched the match live, I had voiced criticisms about our defence without having seen the game - never a wise thing to do. When I did see it I couldn’t spot any howling errors in defence. It was largely down to excellent attacking moves which were well finished off by Saints. Later on they didn’t finish so well & obviously good fortune features. We started really well & at no stage were we completely outplayed, except up front in set plays. As is usually the case I didn’t think our attacking fluency was anything like it needs to be however, despite individual cameos. That’s where progress still needs to be made. A final point is that I don’t think playing home or away makes any difference without the crowd so winning away at Sale or Franklin’s Gardens is not such a big deal in my view.

Agree! Don't have BT so took dog out and came back to hear the result. Amazed. Always interesting reading match thread in such circumstances-I'll say no more than that!
Well that’s made my weekend. Couldn’t see any way back until the score on half time. The Saints players must be scratching their heads tonight. We’ve got a core of young players who really want to play for our club, and it’s infectious.
Brilliant lads.
We’ll miss Rhys and Especially Zach. I really hope he comes back to us after his stay in a France
I've given this a bit of thought when out running with the dog. And I have decided that of course we could be higher up the table, yes we could be showing much more serious potential for silverware but right here, right now ....
Tonight, I'm happy as a long standing BBW supporter. I'm chuffed for the likes of Mercer, Spencer, Reid, Priestland and others that quite frankley were outstanding in their performance effort and quality and I am especially happy for Hoops, Hats and the rest of the coaching team - that was a standout result, thank you
Does it mean we are on track to cup glory? No idea, I'm in the moment and very happy with it
Dunn, Spencer and McC along with the rep props made a big difference. But Rhys and Zach were just immense. We are going to miss Rhys massively, last season’s moaners who whinged about Burns not getting a chance should’ve kept the faith. Mercer has been one of our most consistent performers for years, we will miss him badly.
Tian showed flashes of promise today, loved his running ball in hand, but kicking from hand was good too.
Elliott’s shift was heartening, and Miles Read is fast becoming the real deal.
Think we looked passive in defence in the first half, we let them come at us rather than get off the line and shut down their runners but I think this was a symptom of how much we were losing the physical battle. They looked good and ran impressive lines but we were on our heels by the time they got to us.
This improved in the second half and we started winning some of the forward hits. Also think their scrum half substitution didn't help them. Our subs made a positive impact, their's much less so.
That was one of the best victories I can remember. Saints were out of sight in the first half hour. To turn that round was an emmense effort. The subs all massively contributed. The level that the youngsters including those that didn't play today are at really does give me hope for the future.
To win and have lots to work on is not a bad place to be. Next up an off form Exeter!
Astonishing result considering where Bath were at half-time. Saints obviously didn't get a telling off and got a bit relaxed and complacent at half time = "top 2 inches" head stuff.
Well done indeed. I've had to endure so many 'family crowing sessions at FG over the decades - so very relieved to get a quiet congratulatory phone call!
Just watched the game. The first 30 was concerning but the last 50 was just bluddy fantastic. Saints were just brilliant to begin with but we found a way to stay in the game and turn it around and that's what is so pleasing. The turning point was the replacement of the front row which was excellent management of both the game and the ref. Very, very good. Now let's stop gifting sides 20 point leads.
MotM - Rhys. I thought he played beautifully in all aspects of the game. Special mention to Will Muir. I think he's going to be a superstar.
Brave decision to swap the front row early and that made all the difference - again we see that in some positions the back up isn't really up to scratch at premiership level when they come up against decent opposition but to counter that the really great positive is that (once again) the Bath academy kids and graduates showed that the future is bright.
Positives:
- young lads Reid, Staddon, Richards have so much potential;
- quality from the regulars, Dunn, Mercer and Spencer in particular;
- so much talent on the wings.
- Bath won! Not entirely sure how, but they won!
Negatives
- A few injuries? Josh M didn't know what planet he was on, concerning
- the first 30 mins, looked like they had forgotten how to play rugby and were just spectating with the rest of us;
- the starting front row was totally dominated;
- massive cliff in terms of some positions.
Tighthead needs to be addressed pronto, although Bhatti has shown himself to be a really invaluable short term signing.
No matter where Bath finish, for me the positive from this season will be the game time and experience for the young lads. Fox or Green have to be backup 9 now, assuming that they are fit and staying at Bath next season. That gap needs to be closed in such a crucial position and Spencer could play himself into a call up sooner rather than later.
That was a great game , and for me that showed great character from the squad. Credit to Saints they came out and dominated in the set piece but we weathered that (the subs at the right time) and turned that around . My son watched the game live and when I said how did it go he said I'd want to see this one, boy was he right !
If we had just lost it at the end after that comeback I'd still be really encouraged, things are coming together.
I'm seeing encouraging signs that Henry Thomas is getting back to something approximating his best. If he can maintain his fitness he is enormously talented and well worth hanging on to.

Bhatti looks a significantly better scrummager than schoeman, shame there is no option to hold on to him.
Assume Thomas may stay given judge is off but a decision to be made as only on 1 year deal. He has been fairly awful last few years but so injury ravaged. if he can stay fit defo a decent player in there. If his wage demands sensible then maybe worth taking the gamble he can stay fit and keep improving.
Fantastic win, amazing comeback, one of the best I've seen. We seem to have reversed our previous tradition of falling to pieces at the end of matches to lose games and are now winning games we would have had no right to. Good job bringing the replacement front row on, poor Paul Hill.

Had we been playing the British Lions or the Kiwis..............BUT WE WERE NOT!!
The reality is when we played Bristol a few weeks ago everything, absolutely everything, went for them. If we had played them the way they played Gloucester the next week (they were awful) we would have beaten them.
How many times in the last 2 years have we gone to a 15 - 0 , 22 - 0 first twenty minutes and then lost the match. I would be too traumatised to try and count.
Sport is a funny old thing and as Annie said above a lot is in the top 2 inches. Once the psychology changes it is very, very hard to get it back.
As people know on 'ere I have never been keen on the way RP plays and have always felt we needed a very different type of player to get the most out of our backs. There is no doubt he played very well yesterday and I applaud him for his extraordinary record. Which I think has been achieved with no Geoffrey Boycott type view of percentages.
However.....!! I still feel with the right style of flyhalf, with a 75% - 80% kicking success ratio we would be better off as we would unleash our talented backs on the gain line and score many more tries.
Surprised no one went on the Saints board within 5 minutes of the final result telling them all how much they enjoyed that match, and where the Saints team went wrong. Adding "Bath fan in peace" makes it all ok I hear.

For me McConnochie was as much the catalyst for that as anyone - he's been out for a while and came off the bench, but within 5 minutes he had picked two difficult passes off his knees. Those 2 passes could easily have gone down, and are exactly the type of error that so often take the wind out of our sails. He has such brilliant core skills to go with his pace, strength and directness.
ballsout Surprised no one went on the Saints board within 5 minutes of the final result telling them all how much they enjoyed that match, and where the Saints team went wrong. Adding "Bath fan in peace" makes it all ok I hear.
Maybe, but Saints came awfully close to their bp try and the win at least three times? It was only absolute spirit and effort from the likes of Spencer, Muir and Reid that saved them.
Optimist For me McConnochie was as much the catalyst for that as anyone - he's been out for a while and came off the bench, but within 5 minutes he had picked two difficult passes off his knees. Those 2 passes could easily have gone down, and are exactly the type of error that so often take the wind out of our sails. Certainly agree with your assessment of McC though for me the big difference was Spencer coming on. The pace of our game stepped up several notches when he came on
Yep - he was fantastic too. (and on another thread, i've attributed the turn around to Dunn!!!!).
That last 30 minutes was just littered with heroics, but also some decently calculated use of the bench. In reality - at the time - it looked more like damage limitation than a strategy to nick it. But hey - doesn't 'team spirit' suddenly look great!
I think mcconachie made a difference at full back - Tian S does not seem a natural at fullback his positioning was off for at least one of their tries. Having said that he did look a force going forward maybe try him at inside centre. If TDG isn’t fit next week I’d start mcconachie at full back
Our bench it is fair to say had a much greater impact than there’s. we seem to be finding a way of winning tight games long may it continue despite the effect on my nerves.

Rmc has been excellent at 15 every time he has been given the chance.
Tbf he is just a v v good player all round. First back 3 player I would have in the team which is some compliment

We haven't seen it for a while but RMcC is excellent in the air, he came on at 15 on Sunday and still surged up the wing do for me 15 makes sense. I think that Titan at 12 is also a good idea as proposed by TGK physical but with a good offload as well.
All of a sudden we have a problem finding room for TdG and Watson when available, that has to be good.

Opinion is based on assumptions, whereas fact is based on observation or research.
Hooper said that the plan was to kick behind their wingers, likely to exploit a big slow-turning winger, a centre on the wing and a young full back. So TS was picked as another kicking option. Turns out we go zero ball, largely because we had zero set piece, so couldn’t put the plan into action. Agree that TS didn’t look comfortable, but no one did in the first half, so thought he did ok considering.
When McCon came on, and we had nothing to lose, we looked dangerous, playing the width of the pitch. Interesting to see our attacking setup, with Reid on one touchline and Staddon the other. We moved the ball nicely across the pitch and in McCon, Muir, JJ, Roko, Zach etc we had running threats that looked to exploit the space width opens up, with Mata and Priestland pulling the strings. A couple of heavier ball carriers added (McNally, Spencer, Williams, Ewels, obano, Stuart etc) and, at last, I can see what we’re trying to do in attack. A shame it’s taken this long to see it but hey ho.
Also interesting that Zach seems to be passing the ball more. He’s awesome in the carry, but I think it’s been noticeable that he’s now attracting defenders and either pulling passes out the back or throwing good wide passes. Another string to his bow, as now he’s known widely as a threat, he can intelligently put others into space.
Not sure if it’s a sensible approach, but would like to see us take the attacking intent of the last 30 into the first minute v Exe. Even if we go down, I’d like to see us go down firing a shot or two.

I agree 110%...............I know that's b****cks but it shows how much I agree.
There is no relegation..............so why not have OB on the bench.................surely he has to start some time.

In fairness, I think we wanted to start with a real attacking intent but we couldn't sustain the first few minutes as we were getting decimated up front.
Start Dunn, Spencer and McConnochie ... bring back a lock (McNally) and Faletau replaces Bayliss given his HIA and general workload and we have a lot more starting firepower.
Question: Does anyone on this thread think Saints were anywhere near the same level of ruthlessness and form that Saracens/Exeter have recently been at? Most certainly NOT! They were just playing a team that for 30-40mins were a) pretty much inept at defending, b) giving away mindless penalties and certainly NOT playing anything like the following 40mins...
My point is/remains that the first 30-40mins has happened twice in quick succession (Glos at Home), such that I almost switched off on Sunday, and is unacceptable to me for what Bath should aspire to be! Either that or we accept that we actually ARE a mid-table team at best, and I for one am not prepared to accept that - I hold the team to a higher standard and have done for 25+ years as a STH!
finally saw the game. usual bath curate's egg. some good bits and some awful. we will excuse the awful this time given the lack of player resources.
i thought tommy ellis had a great game seeing as he was playing out of position and lacked match fitness. the young lad staddon looks like he is going to be good. in fact he is good already. of the schoemans i thought tian showed some good touches. he has decent hands and a decent boot. i would like to see him at 10. juan's scrummaging needs a lot of work. he is quick around the field though.
interesting to see how important home crowds are to a result, boosting the home side while intimidating the visitors. with no crowds the away team has a much enhanced chance of winning, as can be seen in numerous prem results this season, including this one.

plong Question: Does anyone on this thread think Saints were anywhere near the same level of ruthlessness and form that Saracens/Exeter have recently been at?
Even Exeter haven't even been at the same level of ruthlessness and form that Saracens / Exeter have recently been at to be fair.
Don't forget that Exe lost to the same Saints side (that aren't ruthless) last weekend.
Somehow whenever Bath lose its Bath that are rubbish and whenever they win its the opposition that are rubbish. Do sides ever win games rather than losing them these days?
I am not really sure I get the point that results are almost null and void if you aren't on top consistently through the match.
Its often hugely momentum and confidence based. Whilst I didn't enjoy the first half I don't feel it lessens the result, makes it a better achievement if anything due to the resilience and fortitude it took. Sometimes I buy into the foot off the accelerator stuff but its when the game is won, not when you are 16 points up with 50 mins still to go.
I always find the '80 min performance' chat v pointless as you assume the opposition are completely passive and you can dictate terms all match.

Look I get the frustration but out of interest when you say that you are not prepared to accept us being a mid-table team; what do you intend to do as a fan if we do remain a mid-table team?
The best any fan can do is enjoy the win .... see the positives and hope for a string of wins!
Before we started the game we were not a top four team. Expecting us to somehow turn into a top-of-their-game Sarries/Ex/Leinster in one week missing more than half our first choice team is not realistic.
It's good to have high standards. They shouldn't get in the way of things being a journey and that the second half was a superb performance and effort.
At the moment there are just two clear 'top 4' sides with probably eight of the remaining ten teams reckoning they can put a string results together to get up there on the coattails of Bristol and Exeter
Sunday's second half performance indicates we have a reasonable case to be in that chasing group
I agree Gaz. We could realistically finish anywhere between 3rd and 10th. I'd now be really disappointed with 11th or 12th. Its possible 10th could be within 2 or 3 points of the playoffs this year so I'm not going to go mad if we finish bottom half. What I would like is to be in with a chance of 4th with say two games to go. That way I'll stay interested till the end of the season and even if unsuccessful will prob enjoy it.
We have no divine right to be at the top. There's prob 7 other clubs that are "as big" as us. We can't all be in the top two or three.

BathMatt - fair point - however Bath this year have produced some absolute dross make no bones about it. It seems strange to me that now we are missing all our so called stars bar TF for the Gloucester game - we appear to be a much more cohesive and focussed side. Is there something in this?
I think if I were a Saints player I would be wondering how on earth they lost that game, we have been there when Bath have thrown games away in that manner, however credit to us - we actually showed in the second half that there were signs just signs of cutting loose.
I think Will Muir although still learning (Saints first try an example where he was caught out)is showing signs of a future superstar - RMC impresses me everytime he takes the pitch.
I have to say I did note some concern in that Tian Schoeman's tackling style appears very poor - almost leading with his shoulder on 2 occasions he was bumped off, more of a concern is that with that style he is heading for red card and serious injury territory - it must be a South African thing, I remember his lordship, Lord Butch having a similar style.
Positives - definately positives - still a lot to work on. Exeter this weekend will be a massive test - they will have their Scottish contingent back which won't make it any easier for us and they will be hurting from 2 losses on the bounce. I am sure they will target our front row 100%.

I'm happy with that right now
Being happy to be part of the chasing pack is quite a low bar to set.

Not really some on here could start with being happy about anything related to Bath rugby
I shall be happy as long as we finish above Gloucester !!

We are not going to be unbeaten from where we are so the direction of travel is what we want in the right direction.
I think we are going in the right direction. We were very thrown by the Bristol game but it is clear that they have not scaled those heights again since........

Um, surely the first point of contact in making a tackle is with the shoulder?
The next important action is for arms to wrap around. Is that what you meant was missing?

The whole approach is a bit odd, he missed a tackle on the touchline (Proctor I think) that was straightforward just bouncing off. Looked to be a problem for a 15, but then he isn't is he.

Listened to the game on Sunday and watched it last night.
Loads to admire about it and be encouraged about.
Was like a microcosm of the season, appalling and then a massive display of character and fortitude to turn it around against all logic.
The squads we have named have been forced upon us due to international absence and injuries but could stand us in v good stead. Hoops/hats seem v loathed to rotate much which suggests a lack of trust in the squad.
After the last 3 games I would have no qualms about playing the likes of staddon, richards, muir ....and Reid, bayliss have absolutely excelled.
Spencer and rmc are sublime players, absolutely class- made a massive impact off the bench. Long may Eddie's blind spot remain.
I think if we could switch some cap from where we have crazy depth like backrow and back 3, to front row , 9 and centre I think there is lots to look forward to next season!

On that basis it just continues to confound me why we hide Orlando Bailey from playing.
NONE of the academy players, adding in GHW to that list have let us down so why does he not appear even on the bench?

Relatively relaxed about bailey, 10 is hardest position on the pitch i think and he is first year out of school. If he still isn't making match day squads next season I will be very frustrated. Saying that no relegation is a great opportunity to blood him (even if it was at 12). Assume he will play lots in the cup.
Ojomoh is the one that annoys me given he is a year older and misses out on selection to several mediocre players in my opinion (not redpath who should absolutely be first choice 12).

Completely agree with the first paragraph, but when Rhys Priestland goes we currently have Schoeman and Matevesi as our 10s. Through injury he might end up starting and playing 80 minutes next season with no experience of even being in the squad!
I think the club have gone to sleep on this. Similarly Ojomoh though we have better cover there.
All very well saying we have a flyhalf coming but we have had that message for sometime now!

I’m willing to go with the coaches who see these players day in day out to decide when they are ready. They must see something that they think they are not quite ready.
I also don’t buy this thing that says they are adverse to play the kids. They have shown that if good enough they play. Miles Reid, De Glanville, Hamer Webb, the young lads at the weekend. Yes some of them have been forced, but they could quite easily have played more experienced players at other times instead.
As for Ojomoh, again I’m happy that the coaches know when to introduce him. Could it be that because we all want him to be great we are wanting him to play now, and this in turn puts this extra pressure on him. He might be doing things in training that the coaching staff are working on prior to introducing him. Just because he is an Ojomoh it doesn’t automatically mean he is going to be great so I think we need to trust the coaches and give him time.
I’ve heard people say about how other clubs play their younger players more than us. They like us will also have a load of players sat in senior academies and not getting a chance because they are not quite ready or might not ever be ready. The coaches make these decisions as they know everybody develops at different times and the cream will always rise to the top eventually.
The majority of us look from the outside, even if Bailey doesn’t read all the comments about him he will have friends telling him. Whether we like it or not we are heaping a huge amount of pressure on him to be the next big thing. The coaches have a duty to manage this and only play him when they feel it is right or else you could destroy him before his career really starts.

Fair enough AWP but the club have said they are both part of our development, so develop them! Holding them back tells them aren't good enough. If that the case move on but dropping them in the deep end is reckless so give them an outing.
My other point is the 'Bath culture' heir peers are all currently involved in a team building spirit as a result of wins against Glaws and Saints, to the exclusion of OB and MO. Forget rafts on Exmoor this is the real deal and they are not part of it. Don't get it!

I am broadly very happy to trust the coaches on this and think we have a good throughput of academy to first team now. Clearly lots of things going well here especially link up with beechen.
Re ojomoh, its not due to him being an ojomoh, its due to Alex Shaw thinking he was one of the best u18s around globally and he was playing for utd aged 17. Just interested to know what the reticence is. As I say its his potential combined with the players getting a go ahead of him that frustrates me but sure there is good reason.
SW- re 10, I agree that if they have no one coming in bailey should be in the squad more this season otherwise we blood him not on our terms I.e. exactly what hoops says he doesn't want to happen.

As Shipwrecked mentioned the approach to the tackle was all wrong - it was almost akin to a straight shoulder charge - hence why I made the comparison to Butch who wasn't adverse to the odd shoulder charge.

I also watched the full match last night and was a bit worried to see Eddie in the stands watching... as would Robson I would think.
I genuinely think spencer is the most complete 9 in the prem and on recent form rmc is a better option than daly. Whenever he plays 15 he looks top notch. He is both quicker and stronger than he looks and so often just glides past the first few defenders. Genuinely exciting to see him and muir on the park at the same time. Need to crow bar gray in and see what he can do!

Spot on in my view, both have the pace to get into position fast from the wing or FB and rarely die with the ball. Can you get Gray in as well CB?

How many European pool games are there left (2)? We are not going to go any further in the Champions Cup so lets give the young backs considerable game time in those games and balance their introduction into the premiership as Top 6 must be a priority.
