Get Up and Go Again...

I’m told that this phrase has been one of the cornerstones of pre-season training at Farleigh this year, aimed at embedding momentum and dynamism in all aspects of the Bath game. There was certainly plenty of that on display against Saints last Saturday from a strong Bath team running out for the first time together. Expectations were high after a brilliant first half although ultimately it turned out to be “frustration at Franklin’s” as Northampton staged a second half comeback to win by one point. Plenty for the defence coaches to work on, but similarly there’s a lot to look forward to especially when those currently playing in France come back into the mix.
So, it’s time to get up and go again for next weekend, but with a friendly scheduled for Friday evening against Edinburgh at the Hive stadium and Exeter coming to the Rec for the final round of the Premiership Cup pool games, who’s going where? Looking at the opposition, Edinburgh have played one friendly game against Connacht last week. They fielded a strong team in the first half to lead Connacht 19-7 at the break but wholesale changes in the second half lead to a 19-45 defeat. Exeter on the other hand ran out 47-10 winners at Sandy Park against London Scottish.
It says something for the work of the coaches and the strength and conditioning teams in pre-season that we are able to field two match fit squads in one weekend. I also think we can assume that JvG has done his analysis during the Premiership Cup games and knows pretty much who will be in the mix for selection for the Newcastle game on 14th October. With that in mind, I think one squad will be based on the team that played against Saints, although there may be some changes with the likes of Alfie Barbeary, Ruaridh McConnochie, and Josh McNally yet to make an appearance this season. I may be completely wrong, but I think the other squad will look very much like the one that started the Premiership Cup off with a win against the Pirates, albeit with a few more experienced players in some positions.
As a supporter we always want to see the strongest possible Bath team run out at the Rec and the indications are that we’re going to get what we would like with a strong team running out against Exeter and Andy Robinson taking a more youthful squad up to Edinburgh. On balance I think that’s right – we need to build up the momentum before Newcastle come to town next week.
I know a lot of us were sceptical about the value of the Premiership Cup format, but on the whole I think it’s worked. On one level it’s provided a great opportunity for younger players to showcase their talents, but you could also regard it as a structured pre-season competition which must have given JvG and his coaching team a good insight into how the playing strategies are developing and what changes need to be made. I’ve enjoyed watching our developing players and the Championship teams make this a strongly contested competition, although it never crossed my mind that the game against Jersey might be the last time we saw them as a team. We all feel for them and hope that a solution will be found both for them and for Championship rugby as a whole. We need them.
So a big weekend coming up. The boys are going to get up and go again and both these games will be hard, so we need to do the same, especially at the Rec.

Interesting that Reid skippers even though Ewels is in the side. I like the fact that JvG is just letting Ewels concentrate on his own game. Very interested to see how he goes this season. Still only 28. Great career to date- but so much more he can still achieve both with club and country.

Like both squads, only downside for me is Ted Hill in the Row. Hope he gets through it unscathed and not too brassed off. My low level experience of asking a back row to play lock never seemed to go down too well!

Most squads are named at noon on Friday. It's Exeter, I'm sure it'll be a first XV, they don't do it any other way.

All our tighthead locks sound injured- roux, mcnally and cuckson.

Hmm, I thought FLW could play 2nd row? Seems odd to me.
I reckon we have 16 players whose best position (imho) is backrow across those 2 squads.... and 3 out and out locks.

Hope so too but I'll be most happy if our returning players get some valuable match conditioning time and we avoided the injuries.
Went to the game at Edinburgh last night. Not much to report on really as they were completely overpowered by Edinburgh in the first half, losing their own ball at first phase and being driven back in line out mauls for a couple of tries. Lost ball in close contact too which stopped any phase play. Edinburgh looked slick and drilled with so much go forward ball but Bath stuck at it when it could have got ugly. The tallest Bath person by a full neck and head was the coach, who I guess was Charteris, so you can see why we didn’t win any line out ball.
Second half was almost a completely new team (up to #28) and with a few more ball carriers the equal of Edinburgh it was more even, even with Edinburgh having largely the same team for 60 mins bar the front 3 - who had overpowered Bath in the maul and scrum. Second half score was 5-5. I liked the young 10 (who moved to RW in the second half) He had no front foot ball in the first half but wanted to play rather than kick which was a pleasant change to the eye. Second half the ruck caterpillars reappeared and the game tailed off with all the substitutions. Hope the coaches learned something.

InI the first half we much the better all round despite kicking out on the full a number of times. Exeter also made several handling errors. It was the reverse in the second half with them on top so can’t read a huge amount in how we will fare when the serious stuff starts.
So if the Jersey matches get removed, as was the case last season when clubs went bust, then it looks like we might qualify.

And if you remove Jersey, we only lost to Saints - and we got two bonus points from it, and we got try bonus points in all the other games.

The state of the pitch was a real concern, grass has just not bedded in. Can we be penalised for providing a poor quality playing surface? Because that can't be up to premiership standard.
Not much media coverage of the game on News Now so I read the match report on the Chiefs site. How amazingly and refreshingly accurate and honest. Hoping we're able to do the same this season rather than the usual blinkered stuff of seasons past.
Lovely warm day at the Rec. Some nicestuff in the first half, and some good defence in the second.
Ted Hill worthy of motm, but for me the most exciting thing was watching Alfie Barbeary carry strongly. He has the potential to make a big difference.

So, the squad we had out yesterday was the bulk of our match day squad going forward. We have the significant addition of Finn Russell as well as Lawrence, Stuart, Redpath, Baylis & Gallagher. I don’t know if I’m missing anyone but it should be a pretty competitive line up. Do we think that “on paper” it’s good enough to get us in the top 4 & if not who will they be?
I personally think our squad is v v strong on paper and top 4 should be a realistic target.
If we can keep fit beno, stuart/tdt, alfie/coetzee, spencer , russell for rhe majority of the season I would see it as being v achievable

A fun day at The Rec yesterday. Games that one can enjoy without the jeopardy of losing have been few and far between in recent seasons - and the sun always helps.
It wasn't a perfect performance by any means but the progress in 12 months is obvious and the players are smiling and full of confidence. I think we will be one of the few teams to be stronger this year than last and Top 4 isn't unrealistic.
Positives from me yesterday was the fact we played our best rugby in the First Half before some bigger names came on - there is decent depth in the squad in most areas. Super Ted Hill was super. Tom DG is looking in very good form - I hope the knock at the end isn't serious. The phase play was good too, underpinned by improved handling in contact. Our penalty count also wasn't totally absurd.
Exeter were poor it has to be said, certainly for the first hour but we did the job in hand and scoring at the end with 14 on the pitch was pleasing.
Tougher and more meaningful games to come but things aren't looking bad at all - apart from the pitch which looks like my wife's allotment.

Only concern reported by my daughter, who was there, was TdG who went off after a heavy blow, and MAY be a HIA issue.....

Garvey said we were v good value got the win and should have been more..... and he has been fairly critical of us last few games.
He loved the indication of good culture/mindset when with the clock in the red we still went after their scrum and won a pen.

Spoke to Muir afterwards, was concerned he was limping at the end but he confirmed he was just cramping.

Re Alfie replaced by Jaco - seemed tactical / pre-planned. Alfie had 60 minutes which seemed sensible. He carried well, controlled the back of the scrum excellently and seemed to be enjoying himself within the group too. Good signs.

Even without underhill and cloete I guess we could probably name a backrow of hill/reid/barbeary with coetzee on the bench. Crazy depth!

JVG's comments at the end of the match seem to address both these points:
JVG: "You can’t ask for more. There was no expectation expect for him to get the ball in his hands. I thought he looked pretty well and I kept him on a bit longer than anticipated.
"Chris Cloete was tight at half time, that is why I brought him off for Sam Underhill, that meant Alfie played a bit longer. I thought he was very good."

Borthwick won't pick him for the Fiji match and then he'll be home along with Ollie
Ted Hill was excellent. Maybe a possible answer to the England TH issue where the admittedly very young Chessum and Martin don't yet quite cut it? I'd prefer him in at 6 for England, a good reminder of his pace on the gallop and a shame he couldn't regather or kick on (it looked like he got caught in two-minds?) the kick through?
