As we were getting ready to head to the Rec for the Newcastle game last Saturday, my wife remarked that in some ways it was less stressful supporting Bath in the days when we had no expectations. I know what she meant. After so many years in the doldrums we can all be forgiven for an occasional nagging feeling of doubt, especially when we are in the hunt for two significant trophies and the injuries to key players are starting to pile up. But there's a major difference these days; we've now got a strong, bonded squad of players capable of sustaining high levels of performance and led by a coaching team that most of our rivals would give their eye teeth for. The banner regularly seen in the Thatchers Stand neatly sums it up: "In JVG we trust"!
I've always liked the Falcons and as a Bath supporter it's hard not to feel some empathy with the situation that they find themselves in. It's not so long ago that we were in a similar place, the key difference being that we have a committed owner with the resources necessary to allow us to make the radical changes required to turn things around. There's a lot to admire about the spirit in the Falcons team. You know that they will always give everything and after the close game at Sandy Park, this match had some of the makings of a potential banana skin for a team at the top of the table with a realistic chance of making two more finals.
Many of us will have been irritated by some of Steve Diamond's comments in the week leading up to the match. The Falcons players would always have been up for this one and didn't need any chat about taking on the "Galacticos" as additional motivation. As it transpired it may have been counterproductive. Yes, we all enjoyed the sight of the "Bath Bombs" coming onto the pitch around the 55-minute mark but stand out performances came from some of the young talent who have progressed through the increasingly impressive Development Pathway. It's the sight of the likes of Ciaran Donoghue, Austin Emmens, and Louis Hennessy playing with such confidence and panache that will live long in the memory. Yes, JvG has recruited very well, but we are definitely growing our own as well!
Securing the home semi final so early provides JvG with a wide range of options going into this week's match at Edinburgh. He is a superb strategist and that famous notebook of his will undoubtedly contain several alternative scenarios for getting us to Twickenham on 14th June and giving us the best chance of winning. That's got to be the main prize, but part of his ethos is that we never go into a game not expecting to win. He trusts his squad and will undoubtedly rotate some players for Saturday, but I think we'll go strong.
We'll need to; Edinburgh at The Hive are a serious prospect. They are currently 10th in the URC, but qualified top of their pool in the Challenge Cup. They fought their way to a draw in last weekend's rescheduled away game against Zebre, but their home form is good with recent wins over the Bulls and the Lions. They have a formidable pack and Boan Venter has already gone public about how much they are relishing the forward battle. Duhan van der Merwe is on a fairly lengthy injury list, but they still have talent to spare in the back division. It has all the hallmarks of a titanic battle for dominance up front with a need for clinical finishing when the opportunities come. We will need to be "on it" as David Flatman puts it for the full 80 minutes.
The Hive is a small venue for a Challenge Cup semi final and it will be a cauldron of fervent home support on Saturday. It's difficult to predict the squad that JvG will select, but you can bet that our own "Flowers of Scotland" would want to play in this one. I think this will be tight but I'm going to fall back on the traditional Bath win by 5.
So yes, we are all up for the challenge. Roy Wiliamson wouldn't have had Bath in mind when he penned the song back in the 1960s, but I'm very much hoping that on this occasion they won't "send us homeward tae think again" and that a trip to Cardiff on 23rd May beckons.
Enjoyed that DB and can relate to nagging feelings of doubt!
Their injury list is indeed extensive so I can't see how we're anything other than favourites. That said, I don't think heavy rotation is in order given it's a SF.
We've got a run of games in the league where we can afford to rest players, so it doesn't seem logical to do so in a game where there's something at stake. Maybe Richards, Green, Hennessey and Donaghue to start with a strong bench again but that would be as far as I'd go.
All these knock-out fixtures...another thing I'm still getting used to. Our season was so often done and dusted by now - normally just the hope of sneaking in to the Champions Cup spots remains. How things have changed!
How interesting I had no idea that Flower of Scotland was such a modern song.......I assumed it went back to the '45......which is of course what you are meant to think.
Thanks BSJ. Yes, Roy Williamson wrote it and regularly performed it with the Corries. They say if you remember the 60s you weren’t there, but I was and I do!

Actually BSJ, I think the reference to "proud Edward's Army" suggests Bannockburn (Edward II English King led the army) rather than the '45 (George II, who was not present for the campaign). Maybe we are meant to think it is as old as the middle ages?
A few front line players were rested last week- Obano, Moloney, Richards, Reid, Spencer, Cokanasiga, De Glanville, I expect they may well feature-plus Muir if fit.
Arguably away to Edinburgh is likely to be tougher than a French team in Cardiff (almost like a home game, it'll certainly sound it).
You'd think JvG will go pretty much full strength with all the rested players and of course cycle the front row. I'm going with:
Ciaran Donoghue
Joe Cokanasiga
Cameron Redpath
Will Butt
Tom De Glanville
Finn Russell
Ben Spencer
Tom Dunn
Beno Obano
Thomas DuToit
Quinn Roux
Charlie Ewels
Ted Hill
Sam Underhill
Miles Reid
Niall Annett
Francois Van Wyk
Will Stuart
Ross Molony
Guy Pepper
Tom Carr-Smith
Louie Hennessy
Josh Bayliss

Going to be a special but very tough game, think I would go for a team along the lines of:
Obano
Dunn
TdT
Ewels
Roux
Underhill
Green
Hill
Spencer
Russell
Muir
Butt
Redpath
Joe C
Tom DG
Annett
Van Wyk
Stuart
Molony
Bayliss
Schrueder
Donoghue
Barbeary
I just think if Donoghue is the back up 10 you need the experience Schreuder brings and JvG likes a big ball carrier off the bench hence Alfie and starting with young Arthur.

Agree with the bit about the bench. In fact I think it will be a massive bench. But I don’t think Green will start, no shade on him however.
Reid rested last game so will 100% be involved - so I think he’ll start at 8. Barbs off the bench. Richards I think could be at 19. With him and Hill liked to go into lock for the last 20. I still think if fit Bailey will be preferred from the bench. Has at some point covered everywhere bar scrum half.
As ever, will be happy with whatever the coaching team and S&C think is the most appropriate selection for this game. As I don't see the players daily etc. I would have no idea who does - or doesn't - need to be rested.

It's fun (but pointless) to speculate tho isn't it !
Will be v science/data driven I imagine- we also only see the games but they will be managing the training workload for individuals as well.
Imagine broadly the training will be pretty light at this time of the season whilst fighting on 2 fronts and majority of the squad playing a part in match day squads
JvG ...
“I was very happy with our back three last weekend but Horse [Muir], Joe, and Tom de Glanville are all available for selection; they were all on the training pitch this week.”
...
“Max has hurt his angle. He will be out for a number of weeks. We will just take our time. Once he is ready to play we will make a decision whether to put him back on the pitch before the end of the season.”

Certainly sounds like Max's injury isn't nearly as severe as initially feared, hopefully can still play a part in the business end of the season.
Edinburgh with an all Scotland pack, I'll be curious to see how D'arcy Rae gets on, I thought he did ok for Bath but never felt he was a particularly dominant scrummager.
Also when Bath United played a friendly against Edinburgh earlier in the season Sebastian had a torrid time up against Cordwell, so hopefully FvW can get a similar result.
In what way OB? It's a cup semi, and the league semi is in the bag. If this match isn't one to wheel out the big guns then I don't know what is. Then let a few of them have a week R&R before really getting to the pointy end of the season.
Had depleted teams through injury PG they were top 5 at the beginning of the season, they have a couple of key players back for the weekend. (Wes Goosen, Marshall Sykes). Still got a long list mind.

Big guns who we can’t win the PL without being used on a dodgy plastic pitch.
Love it. It’s a semi final and there’s a trophy to be won. Let’s go.
Interesting to see Miles starting and Alfie in the 23 shirt. Wonder if Coetzee’s injury might push Alfie onto the bench in the Cup Final XV? Love to see him roaming around from the off, but him coming fresh off the bench for the last 30 minutes is an exciting prospect.
Must admit, how JvG uses his bench had made me believe in the term ‘finisher’. Thought it was nonsense- but the number of games we win/put to bed in the last quarter shows the value of having a clearly defined role for 16-23. Helps that they’re bloody good rugby players, also!
Those squads match up pretty well. Find the galacticos nonsense quite funny- they are stacked with internationals themselves.
Some class backrowers across both 23s - breakdown will be a real battle!
Looks like we have gone as strong as possible.
The usual bang off the bench with the likes of stuart, hill and barbeary in particular.
I share OB's concerns that by going for 2 more trophies we end up with neither but the bigger part of me thinks these opps don't come round that often and let's go for it. Trust the squad over the remaining 3 league fixtures.

I think our league position has made it a lot easier for JVG to go after the treble. if we win today the first XV really dont need to play anymore league games, If we lose today then Leicester at home I would play the semi final 23.
adopted player, 24/25 Hame Faiva. 23/24 Ted Hill. 22/23 Cam Redpath. 21/22 Max Clark. 20/21 Henry Thomas. 19/20 Max Wright. 18/19 Cooper Vuna.
Great bit of defensive play by Horse at end of the half to prevent a counter attack try. They do look dangerous on turnover ball. I still think Finn is not playing his best rugby for the last couple of games. Hopefully winning the physical battle means more points in the second half.
Toast and Marmite 2 points in it but still feels as if the dam can break. Just need to reduce the error count.
We need a classic Bath second half - we've been doing it a lot recently, coming on strong for the second forty. Wonder how early we'll bring on the bomb squad? I can hear TdT champing at the bit from here in Bath!

I don’t think the score line flatters us too much, we were always very on top up front. Great try at the end ( including a lovely pass from Donoghue). Agreed with Sam as MotM. Cam had a really solid game too as did Horse.
shipwrecked Two finals in a season, I'm finding following Bath in this season seriously nerve wracking!
Still job done!
Funnily enough the guys on the Bath Rugby Plug podcast said similar. When we were rubbish, you go to games with not much expectation, but now we expect them to win so each game becomes nerve wracking!
Huge! Another final! Whisper it but 3 big wins and it’s treble time!
Alfie was huge off the bench. As I mentioned, not sure if it’s what he wants or helps his international chances etc, but he might be most effective causing carnage against tired defences.
Completely agree that the expectation of winning is 1000x more nerve wracking than when I assumed we’d lose every game. However, I know where I’d rather be… right here this evening in the Bath sunshine with a treble to go for! Bruce, JvG, Ben Spenno and all involved, well bloody done. Allez Bath!
Toast and Marmite, please take out your statement after all your posts “No sprinkles. For every sprinkle I find, I shall kill you.”

Just got to the pub I am staying in Penrith and read the thread above in anticipation......and there is not one score line above......which was very odd.
Went on BBC Sport to see the score was a "comfortable" seeming 39 - 24 with six tries to three.
Obviously it was a tough game.......it was an away semi final and so it should be.
So maximum of six games to go, 3 premiership games, a Euro Cup Final and a home semi-final and then possibly a final......
As said above its nerve wracking when you are winning!!
Today felt like one of those classic Saracens performances from early in their peak.
Although it was close at times I never thought we were in danger of losing. The game plan seemed more limited than usual and we seemed comfortable trusting in the power game to get the job done.
Underhill had a huge game and was flying into Price’s ribs like he’d insulted his mother all game. Thought Stuart, Dunn, Ewels and Reid were all excellent too along with Redpath in the backs.

Commentary was pretty good and noted how we were sticking to the power game and had the confidence it would come good.
They need to work on their camera work though, it was dreadful- either that or the director wasn’t up to it.

Agree, Underhill's total commitment and crushing tackles just seem to add a dimension to the teams he is part of. It seems to lift the players around him. Love the guy.

I thought there was a funny moment in this video, after Dunn's try Miles Reid comes in and congratulates Ben Spencer with a sort of blow to Spencers chest which actually seems to hurt Ben given his expression! Ben walks back trying to to show his discomfort.

As every game passes we see the confidence growing and the understanding to adapt the game to the game plan is impressive. I haven't seen the statistics but the penalty count, unforced errors and turnovers seemed low. Not the prettiest game but a brilliant display of forward power against a strong Scottish pack. Starting with three 7's unsettled Edinburgh and just when the were getting used to it Alfie comes on and adds a different dimension.
Worth the £15.99 to see it but then the incredible Saints result was the icing on the cake.
Congratulations Bathists and good luck for the final.
Putting aside Edinburgh's apprent determination to shoot themselves in the foot, Bath brought the one thing that is Kryptonite to all Scottish teams including the senior team, an unrelenting power game.
There are forwards playing in the Prem who will never see a cap who would be multi capped Scottish internationals. On the other hand many Scottish international forwards would be barely decent club players down south. And it is power that is the difference.
It is the Achilles heel, and once Bath decided to keep it tight and send it up the guts there was only going to be one winner.
Nice to see a decent number of Bath supporters there enjoying the day.
Just about a ‘home’ game for me. Good weather for up here and a Cup semi final ticket for £15.
Stood behind the posts with a good view of the difference in sub sizes warming up each half. It was pretty clear the power game would do the job even if the game was close at 50 mins as the size difference between 16-21 was, quite frankly, ridiculous. Last 25 minutes I don’t think we really lost a 1:1 contest with ball in hand and most action was at the end I was standing. Edinburgh defended extremely well, were great off turnover ball and knew the ball was live when it bounced off the roof of the stand to score from a quick line out (while we turned our back as never going to be an issue of a live ball for such a clearance at the Rec or probably another Prem ground) But from about 30 minutes onwards at every stoppage in play Edinburgh forwards were sucking in air, hard.
TdT is just a ridiculously large man. Archie Griffin is going to be some size too. Players did a lap at the end signing shirts taking selfies etc. as a lot of supporters had made the trip up. Nice touch.

The only slightly disappointing thing is that we apparently won only because our replacements were bigger than theirs. Having watched it on TV that did seem to be the case. Is that the only way we are going to beat a team like Racing 92in the final? Winning is the important thing but I do like it when we employ our backs who have been brilliant of late.

Lyon presumably favourites being at home and having a slightly better season. Racing seem to be turning things around a little bit but I’d back us to win against either side where we have at least an element of home advantage. Both teams in similar positions to Pau who I was really unimpressed by for what it’s worth.
Managed to watch the game yesterday with a friend from Edinburgh.. sat in the sunshine with a beer in hand whilst out and about at a festival in London... the wonders of modern technology!
Thought Edinburgh defended bravely. I was expecting a card in the 4th minute for Redpath and wouldn't have been surprised to see red. The backs flickered, but as previous commentators have noted, this was a game earnt and won up front through remorseless power. Loved Muirs' little gallop late on too.
How lucky we are to watch a team like this these days. Whatever happens rest of this season it's been a hell of a ride.
hasta Donaghue's intervention that led to Muir's break was excellent as well, took out two defenders with his footwork to create the overlap.
There have been a couple of times recently where Russell and Donoghue have linked up to set up tries, CD not only has the step but also the speed to threaten defences. Ted Hill runs a line that holds the defence as well.

This is why I think we're reaching a point where CD simply has to be in the team...and I think TDG may be shifted out on to the wing to accommodate him. God knows what happens when Santi and Arundel turn up.
Aside from this, how good is it to see that - when the backs aren't quite clicking - we know we can give it to the forwards to simply beat teams up? Edinburgh defended valiantly as others have said, but you can't do that for 80mins. Was brutal at times.
Would love to see Underhill melting Paddy Jackson in the Final but difficult to look past Racing with their squad.
Slight weird performance from Bath in many ways but as is the case this season found a way to win (beating them up front) and am looking forward to the final in 2 weeks time - very reasonable ticket prices as well.
Underhill was absolutely immense, Price is doing to wake up this morning feeling like he has been hit by a train. So happy that Dunny is doing so well, the guy bleeds BB&W.
In relation to 'sprinkles' its just a Family Guy Stewy quote, not really sure what the issue is there?

Great result in the end, definitely felt like there were a few moments where the game hung in the balance, but always felt our pack had the upper hand. The pitch behaved absolutely bizarrely, if we've escaped without any injuries then I'll be mighty relieved. Having reflected on the match it did raise a couple of questions:
Has there been a recent law change that prevents sides from repeatedly opting for a scrum when awarded a penalty? I thought our front row had theirs on toast throughout the 80 mins, and we did opt to scrum on a couple of occasions, but never on consecutive penalties. Would've been nice to grind their props into dust and force a yellow card.
I'm still not convinced there was clearly a hand underneath the ball when Obano went over the line, but it did highlight a real bug bear of mine, which is when the officials are deliberating over whether a try has been scored they almost always purely focus on whether the ball has touched the ground, but not on the actions of the defenders that allowed them to affect the attempted score. In the footage below it looks like Watson is potentially offside for the initial tackle (and a hint of no wrap), and number 2 never looks like he gets back onside before getting involved with the other Edinburgh defenders.
Thought the ref generally did well though, both the cards for Bath were correct decisions.

I've no idea about the sensitivities involved but if you have no idea this is a direct quote from 'Family Guy' which is a niche US cartoon then I can see that the reference to "I shall kill you" in conjunction with 'sprinkles' (kids treats) could easily be seen as a 'dark comment' if not in the context of cartoon humour.
2023 saw the introduction of Online Safety Act 2023 and more recently the Protection of Children Bill is part of a trend to make SM safe for all. So expect to be challenged in the future.
Whilst most of us are not affected or offended I can see that we need to be guarded in what we write.
Sorry to intervene, I'm just pointing out something I've had recent experience of.

Can't see a thread on it and seems like subject needs changing so...what did everyone make of Lyon against Racing?
They looked incredibly well drilled to me with a big old pack. Georgian FB looks like an absolute star, Guillard superb and a quick Google revealed they were missing a fair few as well: Radrandra, Lavanini, Chat, Jackson, Taofifenua, plus Italian internationals Ioane and Page-Relo.
No idea of injury status of those above but going to be a helluva game based on what I saw. The're only 4 points above Pau in Top14, which doesn't seem to tally given the ease in which we dispatched them.

That's spot on BB, recent form is excellent as well. You don't get to a final without being decent.
Mickael Guillard is one to watch, it was his run that caused Farrell's concussion.

Unlike us Lyon are going to be a right old scrap in the league until the end of the regular season, currently only 4 points separating 6th and 11th, the challenge cup final will be sandwiched between matches against Stade Francais (who are fighting for survival) and Toulouse (who now need the Top14 to avoid a trophyless campaign), will be interesting to see how the table's looking in a few weeks time but could easily see their heads being slightly turned by their domestic competition.
D s & t dad Toast and Marmite, please take out your statement after all your posts “No sprinkles. For every sprinkle I find, I shall kill you.”
Firstly it’s a really boring statement after all of your posts and secondly I find the statement “ I shall kill you.” Offensive, distasteful and not the kind of language we like to hear these days.
No disrespect to you but hope you understand.
Thank you.
I absolutely agree about the sprinkles quote. It’s really annoying & seems pointless. When I’ve asked before he takes it down for a couple of posts & then it goes back. Please, please get rid of it T & M.

Just to be clear, I wasn’t particularly annoyed about the actual words but just because it seemed such a pointless quotation to inset after every post, particularly by someone who can make a series of posts. I found myself reading it unnecessarily & being increasingly irritated. I knew vaguely it was something to do with the Simpsons but if you’ve never watched that it is meaningless unlike some quotes which seem to have a point. Perhaps it shouldn’t bother me but it did. However, I was pleased to be told that I should get rid of signatures & have done so & leave others to be irritated. I’m left with the thought that such a quote adds nothing to the content on a board where the only point is communication & discussion primarily about Bath Rugby. If I quoted a line or two from “I’m forever blowing bubbles” after each post how would that go down?

1. Signatures are allowed as long as they don't break board rules. Quoting cartoons and even West ham songs doesn't break board rules.
2. You can turn off seeing them.

Sorry to go on about about this but it's not "quoting a cartoon" as its an unattributed quote, so effectively a statement. Of course It's just a statement and made completely innocently but it has caused offence and effectively been 'reported'.
Had it been an attributed quotation it might never have arisen.
The ability to "turn it off" isn't relevant. The default is "on".

Haven't had time to read through this thread so apologies if it's already been noted - but Charlie Ewels has the most incredible handling skills. If Finn Russell had played that little underhand offload for Sam Underhill's tries it would be headline news.
He seems to have played, and be playing, considerably better rugby than when he was getting picked for England. He should get the summer tour as a minimum.

He has matured into an excellent Premiership squad player IMO (and maybe England A), we are lucky to have him. He hasn't taken his chances at England 1st XV level unfortunately.

I think you may be overthinking this a tad SW.
Perhaps Matt, but the Law has changed (OSA), if everyone is aware of the obligations then fine. It caused someone offence what harm is there in addressing that?

It helps when you're playing in such a good team, but his transformation since he came back from SA is nothing short of remarkable.
Still not sure he's a test match animal but only one way to find out - especially if Chessum follows Itoje to Oz and Martin is still out.
BathMatt53 He hasn't taken his chances at England 1st XV level unfortunately.
But he wasn't playing anything like as well for Bath either. Most non-Bath fans (and a lot of Bath fans) couldn't entirely see what Eddie saw in him. He's 30 this year - that's an age when a whole lot of aspects of a lock's game can come together. If he goes, and has a good tour of Argentina, I think there's an opportunity for him to be one of England's 4 locks - + Itoje, Martin, Chessum - for 2-3 years.
The pantry is looking a little bare when it comes to quality English 2nd rows at the moment (although Coles was super impressive against Leinster) so that plays into Charlie's hands.
I could see him touring in Argentina if the squad is missing a few of the senior leadership group, we'll need a few experienced operators to help guide the young guns.
Harsh of me I know, but after his red card early in the game against Ireland in '22, for me Ewels England career was effectively over. They'll go young-gun for the Argentina/US tour. Hill should go.

Hasn’t Charlie had two red cards wile playing for England?
Yes, he's in a good team, better than at any point in his Bath career, but I believe he is a very significant contributing factor. Given the dominance our pack typically has, it has simplified his role quite a bit. Because our front and back rows are such good carriers, he and Roux, just need to be second rows who win lineout, clear rucks, tackle. I think he will tour with England this summer.
Two things:
Spencer taking the captaincy, and Finn joining as a leader, has helped him massively. As above, it's just freed him up to focus on doing a couple of things very well. He's clearly still a leader in the group, but from minute 1-80, he can just be a second row.
I also think Roux is one of the most underrated and unsung players in the league, which is helping Ewels, too. Roux's engine is phenomenal (there was a stat about the number of rucks he is first to clear?), and that coupled with his big, heavy physicality, means Ewels can be the lighter lock, doing things slightly differently, like ooking for an offload (like on Saturday) or putting in some footwork etc and also focusing on the lineout. It's the best 4/5 combo we've had in years and years, and Roux is the best heavy lock we've have since, well, Grewcock. And that's really allowing Ewels' game to soar.

Yes, so 25 months after the first one, he's given a chance at redemption and promptly gets red-carded again (against Japan). I'm saying I'd never have given him a second chance.
