The nerves have started. After nine months of dominance and five weeks after we 'won the league', it all comes down to (hopefully) two final games. The first on Friday against Bristol. For all Bath have achieved and shown this year, the squad will be all too aware that in a one-off game anything can happen. All that hard work in the Premiership could yet count for naught. For many Bath fans, the butterflies will be all the worse given the visitors are our beloved local rivals who seem to believe they know the secret to beating us. The facts - repeated openly and frequently by the Bears management - are they have won 11 of 14 against us in recent seasons and have beaten us three times this term.
The other side of that coin is the Bath of this season are a very different beast to those that went before, and of Bristol's three wins this year only the game at The Rec back in October can be said to have been first team against first team. Indeed, a cumulative score of all four matches so far this season has Bath ahead 139 points to 131.
Depending on your allegiance and how full you think your glass is, you can a find a statistic to match your mood.
The glass-half-empty Bath fans will worry about Bristol's chaotic all court game and ability to score quickly, our perceived weakness out wide in defence; the lack of a Sam Underhill (always a man for the big occasion); and the aforementioned recent results between the sides. They may even mention Christophe Ridley whose last two Bath games were Saints at Twickenham and, er, Bristol at The Rec last October.
The Glass-Half-Fullers will point to the fact Bath haven't lost at home in the Premiership since the first week of October, or in any competition since December; that Bristol, for all the flair in the highlights reels, have limped into the play offs with 4 heavy losses in the last 6 rounds - beating only Bath B and a Quins team with one eye on the end of season social; and finally that away wins in Premiership Semi Finals are rare. The last one was "Bristanbul" in 2021.
The bookies clearly make Bath favourites, presumably based on actuarial analysis rather than Pat's media interviews - and I am sure the team will be level-headed and well prepared. Never too high, never too low, and tough to beat. This squad is no stranger to knock out rugby and that experience will count for something.
Control and discipline will be key. Bristol will love a more open game. Spencer v Randall will be a key matchup. The Bath back row need to slow down the breakdown. Our tacklers need to stop the off loads. Hill, Muir and others will need the kick chases to be on point.
Selection, for all the squads depth, is likely to be similar to Leicester and Lyon. The choices may be as simple as whether TDT and Alfie start or join the bomb squad - and whether Cam is fit to play in the centre with Max.
I'd go for: De Glanville, Cokanasiga, Ojomoh, Redpath, Muir, Russell, Spencer; Obano, Dunn, Stuart, Roux, Ewels, Hill, Pepper, Reid
Replacements: Annett, van Wyk, Du Toit, Richards, Bayliss, Carr-Smith, Donoghue, Barbeary
Nothing is guaranteed but my glass is half full and that's a XXIII to be reckoned with - strong enough to lead some Lams to the slaughter. COYB.
Thanks Roko. Good preview: sums up the mood and the key factors.
Personally, I would have Will Butt in midfield (not sure Cam is fully recovered) and wonder if Moloney will get the nod over Richards? Otherwise I think your XXIII very close to what will be announced on Thursday. Several players who have done us proud this season could miss out.
Let's just make sure we win it!

If cam is fit I think I would still go with butt/mojo but may be tempted to put him on bench for donoghue but on balance donoghue has played 10 more and in great form.
Never thought i would choose butt over cam but cam carrying small knock and think can be a bit of a liability at times despite being a class player. Butt uncomplicated power game could match up well in this fixture.
Would be delighted for richards if he pips malony to a bench spot but think it's unlikely personally.
Ridley as ref....will reserve my judgement . Hopefully we can get on top at scrum and he rewards dominance so we can have some control on the game. The more chaotic the less chance we have!

I also think that Butt has performed better than Cam this season and fully deserves his place in the team on Friday.
Nice preview Roko. The “Cam conundrum” is a close call, if he’s fully fit. I guess it comes down to JvG’s strategy for this game. Cam is deceptively strong and is very experienced at organising defences. We might need that. In the other hand, who wouldn’t want to see Will Butt in full flight in this game? Tough one to call.
Excellent preview Roko exactly summed up my current mood...on the one hand and then on the other hand.
It is a horrible scenario with Bristol "with nothing to lose" and Bath with "everything to lose".
I watched Exeter v Sale last night and Ridley was refereeing and seemed to do a good job.
I am very nervous and a bit like your report Roko on the one hand I see Bath grinding to a 15 - 0 victory on the other hand I see 2 yellow cards for Bath a dropped high ball bouncing into the hands of Ibitoye and then an intercept try in the last minute to win by one point.......
I suppose it is games like this that we watch rugby for.
On a TV interview Ben Kay has Bath to win and he clarified his view by saying Bath losing the final last year is part of that....they know how hard that was and don't want to be part of something like that again...
Richards is the coming man, and next year I reckon JvG will trust him to rotate more with Ewels. But Maloney has won (and lost!) semis and finals. His experience is why we signed him, and with 20-30 minutes to go, especially if the scoreline is tight and Bristol are throwing punches (hopefully not literally!), his top two inches will be crucial. So he gets the 19 shirt for me.
I also think Cam needs to start (if fit, of course). He's box office. Lost the final with us last year and was immense in that game. He also brings an attacking edge that I think will rattle Bristol, especially if their defence is leaky, as Cam's feet are superb at making yards up the middle.
How great it is though that despite us missing our best centre there's still no weak choice when picking the next best cabs off the rank. Testament to the squad and further support of the theory that JvG's greatest accomplishment has been to maximise the potential of every player. Butt sums up the JvG era pretty neatly- and his rise over the last few years, and his understanding of his place in the squad, is why we're such heavy favourites.
Don't think I have ever felt so excited for a match in absolutely years certainly since hanging up my boots. Cannot Wait.
Christophe Ridley in the middle for this one - just when I was feeling confident - we have had some issues with his officiating recently - when he officiated the match at the Rec earlier he let Bears get away with absolute "murder" Ohgre spent most of the match offside on our side of the ruck and Genge as well.
Must be a change of fortune with him - that is what I am hoping - take the officials out of the match.
I love the way JvG is not rising to Pat Lam's baiting - such a cool calm customer and that I believe really reflects on the squad and how they handle the pressure.
Let us all get down to the Rec and make so much noise to cheer our boys home and make the Bears feel really uncomfortable.

Spot on, it's that experience that keep 15 players on the pitch and not being shown cards of various colours. If it 50:50 then experience wins out.

I also just remembered that they've had only a 6 day turnaround... whilst we've had 14 and have our monster bench. Yes, agree AM, they'll be fired up, but if we can get control in the second quarter, over the course of 80 minutes, we'll be too fit and strong.

COME ON BAAAAATH.
Offside is usually one of the main roles for the ARs, particularly out wide
I see a certain Mr Dickson isn’t involved in either officiating crew this weekend .
A good summary with some interesting stats about attack and defence in this summary commenting on Bath's season. Articles like this always make me nervous!

View from the North Ohgre spent most of the match offside on our side of the ruck and Genge as well.
Put quite simply, they didn't. Whilst I get thats the cry of 50% of the fans at literally every breakdown it simply isn't true in 99% of cases and is mostly misunderstanding of the offside Laws by the casual fan.
Excellent preview - and I like that proposed team - but then I would, almost a carbon copy of my suggestion previously, presumably for similar reasons on the tight calls.
I don't often post about an individual match but this one has got me going. Mainly because of Pat Lam's OTT remarks after their match last weekend. Cheeky monkey!
Come on you Bath boys. Show 'em how to play rugby Bath style, no ifs no buts, just
GET ON WITH IT!
p.s. as some of you reading will recall, I am a Bristolian by birth and upbringing, was taken by my club member grandfather (don't think there were season tickets in those days) to watch Bristol in the old days (1950's), often in the gloom and doom of a winter's day - no glaring floodlights then. Just saying so that a bright spark doesn't choose to diss me.
We have to be precise at the breakdown. In the October game, Oghre was allowed to get on our side of the ruck and disrupt, be that legally or illegally. We need to smash players doing that back out of the way.
We also need to watch their blocking runners in attack and if necessary draw that to the attention of the officials.
But above all we need to dictate the pace of the game, and kick accurately.
Thought I'd repost this from the October match thread, a few examples of how Bristol use runners off the ball to create chaos in defensive lines (I remember this being incredibly triggering to one of the Bears posters at the time for some reason). Hopefully Bath's players will be more street smart come Friday (and the players need to be in the official's ears to draw attention to any similar incidents).
Quote:
boozeboozebooze Due to being at the ground on Saturday (and I'm feeling particularly masochistic), I've now gone through some of the key moments to see what I may have missed from the stands.
The main thing it highlighted was just how bad the one up tackling was (reminiscent of the "bring him down" scene from Lord of the Rings), I'd say that alone was the biggest contributor to our poor performance.
That being said, I found a few bits in the replays that add a bit of context to the poor defence:
Malins Try
Admittedly lovely hands from the Bristol backline, but it was interesting to see BJvR's contribution in the move.
It's a case of which player initiated contact, but Butt was one of the covering defenders who'd have been tracking across had he not been on the deck. Bristol may well have scored anyway if it had been interpreted differently, but for anyone wondering why Bristol could have driven a bus through our defence on this phase, I think this contributed towards it.
Grondona Try
Another example of Bath's defence seeming to part like the Red Sea, but Luatua takes an interesting running line as Genge releases the ball
He doesn't take Obano out, but again Obano is covering on the inside and gets close to catching Grondona, so without Luatua bumping into him he may well have been able to drag him down.
Build up to Underhill yellow card
Grondona runs a dummy line, which seems to obscure Dunn, creating the gap for MacGinty to sprint through.
None of these instances are egregious, but Bristol were definitely being creative with their players in front of the ball, so perhaps something that we should look to emulate if it's all considered above board. Ultimately after it happens a few times, a switched on side should be able to adapt so that they don't get drawn into it.

Interesting post bbb. It's borderline but I'd say it's excellent attacking play, on the edge of legality, and completely fair that the ref gave play on as it's not "clear and obvious". These sort of "blocks" happen every game, and it's Bristol's excellent skills/timing that mean they put attacking runners through holes. I can also see that complex attacking shape like this is a bit of a confidence thing (like everything, like lineouts etc) where once it works once in a game, players tune into the same wavelength, hold the ball longer, run from a little deeper, use the eyes etc and so it's no surprise when it works multiple times in a game. And it's why we need a big first quarter in defence on Friday!
Not that I'd necessarily condone this sort of behaviour... but no Bath player in those clips reacts in an attempt to draw the ref's attentions to the blockers. It might be worth the Bath defenders throwing their hands up etc, then the crowd get involved, and the ref begins to look at the potential blocking more seriously in future phases.
Interesting to contrast with our attack and how Ben and Finn shape it. We usually are going across the front of runners in this sort of phase play, with Finn firing passes to one of 2/3 in a waiting pod. We don't use the blind side wings or hidden runners as much as Bristol as I think we try to use power closer and more confrontationally and then setup with more classic width. One contrary try to that was away v Sale when we hid Finn and RMcCon behind a ruck and then sprung to the open side with a couple of out the back passes and McCon went into score. But mostly we're a bit more vanilla in our structure, although maybe with Mojo in the team we do play with a little more complexity.

Yeah I broadly agree, none of them are quite blatant enough to be overly aggrieved about, on another day the ref might have been hotter on these kind of things, but similar to the breakdown officiating it's up to the teams to figure out what they can get away with and then push that to the maximum.
As others have pointed out, it's going to be wet on Friday, so if we can really pressurise their backline and force a few dropped balls it could have a real knock on effect on their confidence to attempt these intricate strike moves.

Agree about the crowd being a factor, it was fairly subdued in October (possibly down to us getting caught cold at the start of the game), I think generally the atmosphere at the Rec has improved and become more intense as the season has progressed, so hopefully we can continue that with a vociferous reaction to any potential foul play.
I cant get this monumental fixture out of my mind, it's years since I've felt so emotionally involved in a game. Hoping that the players are more relaxed than I, my frayed nerves can't take the thought of losing. The players I expect will be more grounded and look upon it as just another game, with that attitude surely we can expect them to win, Can't we? Oh blimey, I'm doubting myself again.

Anxiety levels are off the charts and there's still 53 hours to go.
My head says we're fine but my heart looks at all the times we've lost to them and is running around like a headless chicken.

I completely disagree about the first example. BJv Rensburg physically takes out two players, knocking both off their feet to create the gap that Ibitoye exploited. That is blatant IMO, not borderline
This happened not far from where I sit and, while it happened too fast for me to appreciate live what had happened, I recall Spencer did remonstrate with the ref at the time and was waved away.
Let's hope that not only are the officials wise to this ploy, but that JvG and JP Ferreira have a defensive response that means we do not need to rely on the officials to spot every infringement.

I feel the nerves too! It's knock out rugby and this time it's different, because we've got a lot to lose. S Barnes wrote in the Times, oddly but quite rightly I think, how Leicester, Bristol and Sale could go no further and still consider their seasons a success. Because of the way we've dominated, and the fact we lost last year's final, no less than the title will do for us. Hence the nerves.
But it's similar to what I felt before the Sale semi last year, and I think how it manifested itself for that game amongst the fans was the loudest I've ever heard the Rec, surpassing the 14/15 semi v Tigers. The noise when Annett scored the rolling maul try to secure the win was the loudest single sound I've ever heard from the Rec- it was the balm that soothed 14,500 shredded nerves!
We need to bring that same fire on Friday, from the first minute to the last, to help get the boys over the line. The nerves are good! It's almost like we, the fans, are preparing to play the game, too!
Although finding it difficult to look forward to the game, hopefully I’ll feel different at the end.. 🙏
+3… I’m sooo pumped for Friday, it’s giving me butterflies just typing this!! To lift the title we have to beat our closest and most antagonistic neighbours and then most likely our oldest Twickenham adversaries, it’s feeling like the good old days again! Bring it on Bristol, we’re ready for you 😉

Thanks Russ. We should be proud of our respective clubs and respect our local rivals, I certainly do and hope the League champion will be from this fixture. I desperately want it to be Bath though. We have the edge on form and I expect us to win but if Bristol play to their potential there could be a upset.

I'm a big admirer of Genge and don't agree with this at all
It's a social media clip (not made by him) in the week of a big game. He loves his club/city, as many do on the Bath side
In the clips I think he alludes to potentially being slighted/overlooked by Bath when coming up through the youth game which we have to respect that is possible. Without knowing the specifics, I'd say he's entitled to feel that way.

'Hate' is a strong word, its only a game of rugby. One team will win, one will lose and the sun will still rise on Saturday morning, sure I want Bath to win but I don't get all the rage tbh.
There is a dark side to that comment supposedly disguised by the label ‘harmless banter’. There is always the possibility that that comment can be seen as a licence to inflict pain in comments or even physical violence.
It’s not worthy of one representing the Lions either.
It’s basically an pretty immature comment.
I hope it’s not dismissed as fun on the podcast!

Hear Hear!
Rugby derbies should be more like a sibling rivalry; you want to beat them the most, because they mean the most to you!
TBH, even then, I don't consider Bristol to be our biggest rival (they definitely see us that way) - I'd place Gloucester and Leicester as matches I'm more desperate to win (whilst also wishing Gloucester well against anyone-but-Bath).
To me, the Bath v Bristol rivalry feels more like sibling rivalry with a notable age difference - with Bristol caring most about Bath, but Bath acknowledging that, but being busy with bigger rivalries.
A bit like England v Wales/Scotland/Ireland; or away from rugby, like France v Belgium, USA v Canada or Australia v NewZealand.
But then, whilst I have a fair few Bristolian friends, I don't live there, and don't interact with them on a daily basis any more.
gaz59 Lam getting another dig in about why Bristol returned so many tickets. Total absence of class from someone otherwise I've thought very highly of
Personally, I was priced out of live rugby over a decade ago (without moaning about it). Everyone's going to have a price point where they just can't afford/justify it.
Whilst they're selling out, and rugby needs all the £$€ it can get, I don't feel I can complain, even if it does mean that I can't attend.
Worth noting that plenty on here have complained about the pricing as well, so Lam is far from alone there. But we still sell all the tickets, so we just have to suck it up and accept that tickets are NOT too expensive to sell them all - just too expensive for us to afford (and that we think that's a bad thing, because we want to be there)
What is more weird in that quote is that he stops his wife going out in the rain. I'm sure she could get a seat in the dry if she really wanted to go, or wear a coat, but if I said that to my wife she would tell me that she isn't a child. Odd.
The whole ‘Bristol fans have been priced out’ is just nonsense to be honest.
Yes Bath tickets are really expensive (slightly different discussion) but it seems pretty clear that Bristol fans have mostly taken a view that they don’t like the combination of cost, Friday night and a trip to the Rec. Appreciate many genuinely can’t afford it but also true that there are those that could afford to attend that have chosen not to.
Enough of their fans would have paid the £60/70 for the best seats at the Cardiff game which when you add travel, food and drink for a longer day is probably the same sort of cost for a game which isn’t a playoff semi albeit in a grander stadium. Many will do the same again if they make the final.
Yeh, I get it and, yes, the game needs "narratives" and characters (although funny how it's always the Genges and Haskells, the characters, talking about how the game desperately needs characters) but some of the verbals coming from their side (like Bristol's blockers in attack!) feels borderline.
Genge's point seems to be that because Bath never think about Bristol, and perhaps that means that we in Bath see Bristol as beneath us, it's ok to "hate" us. He also references Ewels saying that Bath's derby is Gloucester, not Bristol. I know Genge came from a tough part of Bristol, and Bath is famous for a Royal Crescent, but does the average Bristolian, one who doesn't play for a Prem rugby club, really "hate" Bathonians? Does a bank manager in Cabot Circus "hate" his counterpart on Milsom Street? I get it if he's using it to fire up his forwards, but the word "hate" does feel a little too much, and one you don't hear much in rugby, a sport with pretty clearly defined values.
Lam's comments are plain weird. Again, ok, if he's trying to fire up his players by making it public that his wife was going to get her hair wet, then fine. But swap JvG in for Lam, and does JvG say all this nonsense? No. He respects the opposition. Talks about how the opposition coach has done a great job. About the success the opposition has on the field this season etc. But he also mostly talks about his own team, and not about the opposition's ticket pricing structure. Maybe Bristol win and Lam's version is the difference... maybe... but I much rather characters like JvG being the spokesman for our game.
Mr Lam's comments this week have been odd, even Bristol fans have views on this. One reminded him that many keen Bristol fans bought their tickets direct from Bath when on general sale. I'm not surprised they returned tickets, Friday night fixtures do have their drawbacks and are unpopular with many fans. Had the game been on Saturday they would have bought the lot.
The whole whinging about ticket prices ostracising Bristol fans is totally disingenuous.
The cost of going to live sport is not purely ticket prices, it’s also transport, food/drink, time (depending on what value you put on that), and sometimes accommodation.
Given it takes all of 15 minutes on the train and costs £10 to get to the Rec, even with above average ticket prices it still represents a decent deal for an away fixture.
Is Pat honestly saying that if they were travelling to Leicester tomorrow, they’d have droves of Bears supporters at Welford Road purely because the tickets are cheaper (ignoring the horrendous journey you’d have there and back).
Of course if Mrs Lam is feeling the pinch, she could always save £4 and get the X39 bus, every little helps!

Exactly - it shouldn't be hard for us as fans to recognise we might have similar feelings, especially at the prospect of seeing your club get hammered in a stadium that isn't your own!
I’m sure the club would find somewhere appropriate to accommodate the visiting head coach’s wife if someone at Bristol put a call in. I would venture there’s no need for her to stand in the Thatchers End on Friday night.
shipwrecked Ok. So it’s ticket pricing [www.rugbypass.com]
I wondered if it was an objection to the tickets being sold I blocks interpreted as corralling.
Which of course Bath have no control of. If it is actually happening of course!
Does anyone know if the tickets are being sold this way?
Who cares if they returned a lot of tickets, Lam’s comments are background noise.
Renting tickets for a semi final you battle all season to be in is hardly supporting your team is it. It’s a bit like giving up on your team.
It will be interesting to see how many fans of each team turn up on the day.

Exactly, they've ceeded their opportunity for a greater backing in a big match scenario.
These are the kind of weeks where you see the difference in mentality of the sportsman and the fans. The fans get wound up by the words, while the players simply don't

Francis Allen Still plenty of tickets available so a lot of Bath fans unhappy about the prices too, also, Friday night games always a turn-off for many fans.
Not sure that's really accurate - tickets only left in 9 areas, only 4 of which double digits (TTS 14%, EG 15%, ED 11%, SSE 15%). I would guess that there will be at least 13,000 of the 14,500 capacity filled - or at least unavailable?
Agree that for the non STH the Friday game, recent Cardiff Cup Final and the potential for a Twickers visit next week as well as potential rain will have made a few want to sit at home and watch instead. But not that many...

Francis Allen Mr Lam's comments this week have been odd, even Bristol fans have views on this. One reminded him that many keen Bristol fans bought their tickets direct from Bath when on general sale. I'm not surprised they returned tickets, Friday night fixtures do have their drawbacks and are unpopular with many fans. Had the game been on Saturday they would have bought the lot.
Lam’s various comments, and Genge’s interview, are pretty transparent, and seemingly orchestrated.
Reminds me of a bowling team sledging a cricket batsmen to both fire themselves up, but most significantly distract the opposition to become emotional, lose discipline etc etc. They want an emotional, loose game with a bit of chaos.
We seem to be doing a decent job of ignoring it, whilst hopefully using it to quietly provide steely determination
Personally don’t mind, good bit of fun and theatre!

PG
Also in the pre meet with the referee team we must highlight this to the officiating team.
Widcombe boy Bristol might have sent some back because they’ve already bought thousands 🧐
Good point, certainly hope not though because the fewer of them at the Rec the better as far as I'm concerned.
Surely they wouldn’t have known that they would have made the playoffs until Saturday PM. Wouldn’t have been any bought before then.
The game didn’t “sell out” until the Monday, which even then you knew the end blocks are always held back.
Then the tickets came “live” again as Bristol don’t need anymore. Thats a small block of time Saturday PM to Monday PM for Bristol to buy up tickets.
Or perhaps they don’t want to see their team take a beating at the Rec and recognise that for all their wins they have been glass brittle. And unconvincing.
It would be great if JvG responded to Lam's comments about our ticket prices and lack of roof and Genge saying he hates us by going off publicly about their use of the term, System Players. It would be the most un-JVG thing ever and it would be fantastic.
"On a Monday, we reset to zero and have this saying, never too high, never too low, and I've another saying about enjoying every day because it's later than you think, and we respect our opponents and the values of the game we play... but what in the Good Lord's name of holy &*%^ are System Players?!"
Francis Allen Still plenty of tickets available so a lot of Bath fans unhappy about the prices too, also, Friday night games always a turn-off for many fans.
A] Define "plenty"
B] Hardly surprising, given that we've seen plenty of moaning about ticket prices from Bath fans through the last couple of seasons. This isn't a new thing.
C] Wasn't it sold out before Bristol returned their allocation 2 days ago? I'm sure I saw social media posts saying as much.
D] Yes, Friday nights have always had their nay-sayers. This isn't a new thing.

ChippenhamRoman Surely they wouldn’t have known that they would have made the playoffs until Saturday PM. Wouldn’t have been any bought before then.
Define "known" - no they wouldn't have had 100% confirmation, but anyone looking at both the table, and the fixture list would have called it about 90% in favour of being Bath v Bristol on the Friday since the previous weekend; and with ticket exchange reducing the risk as well.

Genge made his comments on the Good the Bad and the Rugby podcast. Interesting on that broadcast it was revealed that Will Stuart was going to participate but was prevented from doing so by Bath.
Clearly JvG wants to avoid mud slinging and concentrate on the game. Least that how I interpret it.

Opinion is based on assumptions, whereas fact is based on observation or research.
With Lam and now Gengey's comments in the press, this is getting tasty! Think JvG/players on media duty have done the right thing and risen above it. Stick to the script we've had all season and use their words as motivation behind closed doors.
Re: selection, you have to hope Cam is 100%. Assuming he is, it's the right call IMV. Defensively he's like having another openside on the pitch, not to mention his link up play with Finn. If he's not, does CD cover 12?
Personally, I'd have started Reid/Bayliss and gone Pepper/Alfie off the bench but I'm nitpicking.
Going to be a helluva night (needs to be for £100)!
I love listening to JvG even on Rugby Union Weekly with Chris Jones his comments were calm, gracious and non-contentious.
Lam is trying his hardest and every way to get under the club's skin and goad a reaction or distract the squad - I just love the way JvG just keeps quiet and ensures the squad concentrates on executing on the pitch rather than in the media.
Some might suggest it is desperation on their behalf and I don't know why they are going down that route - they have an excellent 23 out on Friday - why not just Shut Up and Show Up.
No better way to answer this type of tactic than winning the game IMHO.
Just cannot wait for the game - I hope and pray we make some serious noise and remind Bristol that they are in our Backyard.
I think this is just another way Bris are misreading the opposition so long may it continue. Unless we pretend to rise to it and they get overconfident and careless...
But that's not JvG's way and I prefer his calm, measured approach.
In fairness to Ellis Genge I think the comment has been inflated out of proportion. The word 'hate' wasn't used maliciously but more as a synonym for intense rivalry (à la Man City Man U).
He states that the 'guys' are OK of the pitch and clearly has a strong friendship with Will Stuart, who he will pack down against on Friday. He has deliberately bulked (124kg) up to face will Stuart and TdT.

He definitely used the word "hate" on the Ruck podcast, pre the league match in Cardiff. "We were brought up to hate Bath". And on that Haskell clip, he said he had a "personal vendetta" against Bath.
I think it is pretty lame, but he is choosing to repeatedly use that language.

Enjoy the game all, hope it’s a good atmosphere and a clean game without any cards or contention! Hopefully we (Bristol) can find our form from earlier on in the season, and we will have to be at our best to beat you guys.
Should be a fun evening and hopefully a great game which I’m sure will have plenty of neutrals watching
Surprised the bookies have us as such hot favourites given how comfortably they beat us at the Rec in October. Seem to remember the game was pretty much done by half time?
OutsideBath Surprised the bookies have us as such hot favourites given how comfortably they beat us at the Rec in October. Seem to remember the game was pretty much done by half time?
October was a long time ago, and only the 3rd match of the season, before form, confidence and cohesion have had a chance to actually bed in.
Even as late as Christmas we had plenty of posts on here about how Bristol were simply unplayable, unbeatable, were going to sweep all before them and nailed-on table toppers.
They beat us because we threw the game-plan out of the window, and tried to play fast and loose with minimal control - and they were simply better at that game than we were.
In June, all teams know better than to try that, and that Bristol can be beaten with a controlled & disciplined power game - exactly as Bath like to play it.
We're rightly comfortable favourites; which is absolutely not to say that we can't be beaten; and we do still look vulnerable to a fast, wide game; especially if we get dragged across the pitch and back again.

A lot of rugby has been played between October (our last league defeat) and now.
This time tomorrow I will be in my seat anxiously awaiting what seems to be Bath and Bristol's most important game since the conception of the play off system. Yes, we've been there before but this game is monumental. Traditionally Leicester and Gloucester have been seen as our nemesis but over the last two seasons Bristol have, in my opinion become the team to beat. Lam, Genge and social media has raised the rivalry to a new level this week. Unlike some, I don't feel any animosity towards them but we cannot, must not lose tomorrow. It's been wonderful being a part of JVG's journey, tomorrow all of us fortunate to be attending the game must raise our support to a new level. The loyal Bristol fans will undoubtedly be vocal, they must be drowned out by the majority, this is no time to be silent. There was encouraging signs in the Leicester game that the enthusiasm went up a level, tomorrow all our inhibitions must put to bed, make a noise like never before. I need to take a pill and lie down now, can't get this game out of my mind!

90% of Prem SFs are won by the home team, so of course Bris are the underdogs and Bath strong favourites. Bris can win though, if they play out of their skins. I'm expecting/hoping for a result more like the 2015 semi though.

3000 Bristol supporters coming according to the Ruck (Times) podcast , one of the Journalists presenters lives in Bristol. So we’ll have to be pretty loud!!
Also a worth a listen as Will Stuart, Finn and JVG are on there
Pretty sure that that Ruck episode (which is a great episode!) was recorded before Bristol returned so many tickets from their allocation. Of course, they’ll be here in numbers and loud, but we’ve absolutely got to stick it to them and drown them lot out.

Frankly find it hilarious how hard some in the Bris camp are pushing this working class city v posh boys angle given Bristol could be renamed Shoreditch on Severn.

(A bit of friendly banter is far preferable to all the 'hate' stuff.)
I have never been so nervous and yet so excited about a rugby match in my life. Thankfully, I do not have any work or other stuff today that requires concentration!
Comparing the two x 23s the individual match ups are pretty close.
It is going to be a tight result I reckon and we will certainly need to score more than 24 to win, possibly significantly more
I'm with you Gaz, hardly slept last night, can't stop thinking about this game. Seems like the biggest game in 50 years of watching Bath. Why? I can't describe. I've watched every Bath final since 1984 but never felt like this.
Yep, there's something in the Bath air today. Something special. Cannot wait for it.
It is unbelievable to think back only 3 seasons to when we finished bottom, and compare and contrast that with where we are today, so excited about the prospect of a home semi, with the likes of TDT and Finn offering gigantic influence, but also the old hardcore lads, such as Dunn, Beno and Ewels, leading the charge.
Let's go, Bath. In, all in, all of the time tonight!
To the insomniacs - Why? Bristol have a short turnaround, Bath has home advantage, (90% of the semis go to the home side) Lane a thorn in our side previously not playing. We are playing our best side against them for once, can't see Bristol winning sorry.
Only think that could change that is discipline. Bath will be pragmatic, kick for position, kick for goals, Ben and Finn have done this before as have many in the team last year.

Spot on Shippie - hope people can enjoy the night, and remember, it's only a game!
It didn’t keep me up last night but there’s definitely a different feeling about this game than others. Just for recent knock out games, Northampton felt like a 50/50 game albeit they had a better season than us, Exeter were clearly better the year we snuck in and Saracens were pretty all conquering at the time we lost that final.
Playing Bristol is part of it but also the 30 year wait, coming in as objectively the league’s best team and favourites for the first time in ages, how recently the team were just getting beaten week in and week out.
It all adds up and personally it’s more excitement than nerves but understand why some would react the other way.
I don't think it's the thought of losing that is playing on my mind so much, it feels like Christmas Eve when I was a child, the impatience, expectation and wonder about presents. Surely Father Christmas in the shape of JVG is going to reward me. Isn't he ? Must get there early to soak up the atmosphere.
Having no links to the south west I’m just not into this Bath/Bristol rivalry, although I have noticed they have some weird obsession with Bath and a massive chip on their shoulders.
I almost didn’t get a ticket as it’s the one game each season I really dread. I just find a large group of their fans unpleasant and football like (I also go to a lot of football games and the atmosphere is different). Just want it to be over with and a resounding victory for Bath against the only team capable of troubling us at the Rec.
Personally, I keep trying to repeat JvGs mantra of never too high, never too low. Whatever happens, we should be proud of this season and how we've played. Trust the process.
This works for about 30 seconds. I feel calm and relaxed. Then the nerves / excitement starts to mount again...! 7 hours to go!
The October loss at the rec makes me think of Eng v Aus final RWC'91 - if we do what we do, we really ought to win (whilst still being vulnerable out wide). If we let them get in our heads, and try to show that we can do what they do, they're simply better at it than us.
So odd isn't it because other weather websites don't have anything like that forecast. Bit of rain here and there, but not much before much later into the night after the game. #Pray4MrsLam
What's niggling me is that I just wish Underhill was playing. I'd be so much more confident if I knew he was going to level Van Rensburg or Mata. Tonight will be a lot about momentum, and which team can get on top and then build on that to get ahead. If Bath do early, and the crowd gets going, we could pull away. If Bristol gain momentum, Bath might get nervous, the crowd will go quiet, and they'll be in with a shot. There are few better players in world rugby I'd say for delivering momentum from defence than Sam Underhill. We'll be fine without him- but it might need Ted or Beno to make an Underhill-style (legal!) hit in his absence and get us on the front foot.
theredseat Not a 40 mins of sticking to the process there
Given away multiple penalties off tap penalties that didn’t need to be tapped is incredibly frustrating.
Well in this though. Calm heads needed
Yeah we just need to camp down there and play some simple power rugby
Just watched the match. Let's be honest Briz had us on the ropes for 60 minutes. Fortunately, we made hay when we could and dogged it out when we had to. You look at the score and think comfortable win. It really, really wasn't.
We move on and whoever we play won't pose us the same questions that Briz did but we passed the test and that's a big tick in the development of this side.
My MotM - Bernhard Jansie van Rensburg. A simply extraordinary performance which underpinned everything Briz did. It seems a very unfair for him to be on the losing side.

60 is generous.
First half, absolutely. We let them get in our heads, and couldn't control it (nor could 1-2 of theirs), and whilst they ran riot, we also just about contained them.
2nd half we controlled throughout.

Don’t dispute the BJvR call, but to say they had us on the ropes for 60 mins isn’t right. They definitely had the first half, but we completely outplayed and out muscled them in the second.
I think Briz exhausted themselves emotionally. They were overhyped and wanting to fight everyone but couldn’t sustain it. The cause of the second yellow card was right, but the outcome wrong as Marmion wasn’t the offender and losing their scrumhalf was a disaster.
From our perspective, we really do have a special cohort of players. None of them thought we were going to lose, and there are some totems who enforce that belief. Dunn, Ewels, Reid, Spenno, Redpath are champions, and Ted Hill is supreme.
The loudest I’ve ever heard The Rec. Cracking game of rugby and a proper derby and knock out tie.
Thought Pepper and Hill were absolutely immense throughout. Finn showed his class by kicking everything from the tee and guiding the team home. Ojomoh looked a threat every time he got to ball and Cokanasiga didn’t put a foot wrong and worked his nuts off all night.
That 20 mins after HT was as close to perfect rugby as you could hope to see
Brilliant entertainment.
(And an enjoyable bit of shushing from a fired up JvG at the final whistle)
Yet a gain imvho it was the preparation and planning by the Coaching Team. Bristol to put it bluntly were a bit all mouth and no trousers before the game and from my humble point of view (humble as in a female who has never actually played the game), Bath didn't lose their nerve in the first half, (see in it all before?) and then let loose in 2nd when Bristol thought they had it in the bag.
but what do i know ...................................
Tbf Annie I'm sure Briz knew how good we've been in the 2nd halves of games and it wasn't complacency but just something that can be hard to stop. The pre-game stuff I think was just an attempt to rile Bath into going off script and playing the type of game Briz are better at. They're a good side and they had their chances to win it.

it worked reasonably well for the first half too. But then we took a breath, and JvG calmed it all down again, and we cycled through the gears for a bit
Agree with Joe that BJVR was MotM but some very good performances from Bath players.
Dunn looked like he had done 12 rounds with Ali!
Thought Cam proved his selection was correct.
Finn class.
Pepper & Reid very good.
I hope Finn's OK for next weekend. He looked quite uncomfortable for a while before coming off.
Credit to Bristol as well - the game is better for a team that plays like they do.
As to their fans, the few I encountered on the terrace were funny, sporting and knowledgeable. Certainly better company than a couple of Bath "fans" who seemed determined to get as drunk as the could as quickly as possible and spent most of the first half trying to antagonise the Bristol fans, vaping, and using foul language. Thankfully absent for the second half.
shipwrecked My nagging concerns, was Roux subbed for an injury. Is Finn leg OK.
Also Donoghue came on and made two important tackles, for me he has cemented his place in the match day squad, feel for Orlando Bailey.
Saw Finn pull up and really looked like his hamstring had gone at first. Seemed to be moving ok after the game and no one showed any real concern when he arrived on the bench so would guess all good for next week
hasta Finn had a big bruise and was limping a little, but seemed very chill at the end. Max, Quinn, Alfie, Dunn all looked like they had knocks.
CD's 50:22 was just really mature, loved it. The Rec came across LOUD on TV.
The Rec was rocking and the loudest I've heard it in years. Credit to the Briz fans, they really egged the Bath fans on to out sing them.
Amazing atmosphere and I'm knackered now - feel like I played a full 80.
Hasta - isn't there something missing from your post?? I do believe we have a possible momentous event still on
Great game of rugby. The intensity levels were through the roof. Fair play to Bristol, they wanted that. It’s been a tough season for them, lots of injuries, and some real up and down performances. However they’ve made some decent signings and if they can learn to defend like that week in, week out then they’ll be in the playoffs again next season.
Reid was outstanding today. V. Good games from Pepper, Redpath and Cokanasiga too.
Some sore bodies, back room staff will certainly be earning their wages over the next 8 days.
I need to watch the recording back, but live at the ground, it seemed that Bristol got away with many blatant infringements at the breakdown, in obstruction and forward passes in the first half.
In the second half it was notable that many of these were picked up and penalised.
I just felt there was a bit of a ‘rope a dope ’ aspect about the game . Seemed to me we were reacting to the social media jibes and we’ were trying to play them at their own game.
Clearly at half time we got the focus back and wore then down but there was a determination and intensity about Bristol and Ravavouvou was extraordinary.
They ran out if steam because our defence was unrelenting.
We will need all of the 8 days to recover. Just hope Roux is ok his lineout work was excellent. Final point big Joe was the best I’ve seen him at Bath, not only in attack but in defence as well.

The 60 I was referring to was the first 40 and the last 20. Briz had 2 or 3 good chances in the final quarter, taking any one of which would have tested us severely. Ibitoye at 9 threw our defensive structure. We made our own luck, yes, but we were fortunate.

Not the last 20 I saw but there you go. Life would be very boring if we all agreed, all the time.
What a night. I've watched the game twice now - once from the Dyson and then on TV back home. Bristol deserve a huge amount of credit. They played some wonderful rugby and their big players in the three quarters all showed up. Oghre is a wrecking ball too - must be the Beechrn Cliff in him. Their first try was sensational. They made us earn that win the hard way - and it was all the sweeter for it.
Watching back, the first half was more even than I thought live. The first 20 of the second was fantastic and the last 20 a bit more than game management. Bristol threw the kitchen sink at us (,they hsd to) but the defence between 60 and 70 was superb. Miles Reid was heroic.
My MOTM was Ted Hill. Tireless across the park, as effective at lock as on the flank and his tackle on the flying (if fortunate to be on the pitch) Ravouvou was a brilliant moment. Redpath was class throughout too.
Lovely to see how much it meant to all the players but especially the local boys. Max was popping. I'll admit to some schadenfreude watching Genge and Lam after their midweek antics too.
Fingers crossed on the injury front. We'll need everyone patched up. That extra day will be useful.

I don't usually bite but oh the irony. 'Ridley giving us nothing at all'... Sounds familiar to you? Think about your posts...how often you think the referees are against Bristol.
I was a bit frustrated with Ridley in the ground at one stage. There seemed to be a few knock ons from Bristol in the first half that he let go as not being forward which I felt get called nearly all the time.
On re watch I think he did a good job. The knock ons weren’t all that clear anyway and there’s always marginal stuff that could go either way.
My one constructive criticism was he did seem to let Genge question something at almost every break in play. I’d like to see him be a bit stronger there and I don’t think it really helped Genge either being so persistent
What a game! That one will live long in the memory, and huge kudos to Bristol - great team, unbelievable play at times and all the fans I chatted to were knowledgeable, good humoured and fun to be around.
First half was a hard watch, but felt that as long as we hung on we'd be ok. Pepper, Hill were great, and how much has Joe's defense and catching improved? Loved CD's 50:22 too (just before he was testing the wind direction). Credit too to TCS (I think) who turned himself into a human speedbump right in front of us in the last few minutes. So many great moments on both sides, and I don't think Ive ever seen so many players down on their haunches or with cramp.
Looking forward to a more relaxing watch this afternoon, don't really mind who we face, we should be confident - last night was worthy of a final itself. Atmosphere in Swift Half after was electric.
The directive to look for all possible mitigations to avoid a red until the 20-min red comes in remains pretty clear. No way Ravavou gets away with that head contact if he hadn't previously had a yellow.
Obvs we benefited from that with Sam, so no complaints. Beno might feel slightly aggrieved!
P G Tips I need to watch the recording back, but live at the ground, it seemed that Bristol got away with many blatant infringements at the breakdown, in obstruction and forward passes in the first half.
In the second half it was notable that many of these were picked up and penalised.
I wonder what changed?

Lamentable one line comment on one of the fairest posters around and a ref to boot. Multiple Bristol credits above, its a shame that you spoil that!

What a night. One of the - if not the - best in 40 years going down the Rec.
Bristol played a huge part. What a team. What skills. What guts! Randall going off was huge as the split second extra he gives them is the difference between a set or disjointed defensive line. It felt like we were being cut to ribbons, but our defence in the first half was immense. Our discipline and fitness to realign after they’d got behind and keep them out (other than once) was phenomenal and pretty much won the game, as a 7 point lead was never going to be enough.
I just love the 3rd quarter. Play it please as I go through the curtains at Haycombe. Everything good about the JvG era came to bear. Our fitness, our squad depth (Miles off the bench!), our power, our guile, our brains. It was brutal and, mixed with the release of tension from the first half, the best passage of play I’ve ever had the luck to enjoy.
Agree with everything above about the back row. Ben and Finn were class too. A word like I had a few weeks back for Quinn Roux. The guy’s a monster. Bristol came for us physically and he stood up and said no. And then he’s piling into offensive rucks, charging after kicks, stealing line outs. Other guys get the headlines- but it’s because of Roux they do. Love love love the man.

I felt that Ridley was a bit generous to both teams, trying to keep the game flowing as a spectacle.
Closest thing to a controversial decision was the Marmion yellow, which I thought was harsh; but not sure if there was a final warning in there or not.
NB: I was watching in the pub, so didn't get to hear much commentary, or any ref mic stuff.
Ridley very much tried to let things play out, so of course both fans will think there were things that were missed.
Lam recognised Bristol's early chat at him was costing them, so Randall was effectively muzzled and everything had to go through Luatua, which is how it should be!
Having your 9 as captain can be a bit of an advantage, given how yappy they tend to be
I've also had a chance to rewatch the match and it's pretty clear to my eye that the change that made all the difference was Mo for Alfie at half time. In the first half Guy had no real jackalling help and the Briz ruck ball was so insanely fast our defensive structures were being broken at will. As soon as Miles started competing too, the Briz ruck ball slowed and we could realign our defences properly. He maybe won us a second a ruck but thats all it needed. Plus Mo was epically good around the field. The tackle where he simply picked up Ellis Genge was a thing of beauty.
... IMHO, of course.

I thought Christophe Ridley read the game and the mood well so contributed to the overall spectacle. Dealt with Genge early reversing the penalty, recognised this was a high pressure derby game that would have some chat, push and shove and put the TMO in his box a couple of times too. Marmion did slow down really quick attack ball inside the 5 so IMO needed to go.
Rawce The Rec will hopefully be really loud and on it this Friday.
Mission accomplished, very well done everyone. I need the full 8 days for my voice to recover. The loudest it has been since the semi against Leicester. Hugely nervy and hugely rewarding.
Bristol’s defence and scramble attack was immense in the first half but a halftime reset to play our game at a phenomenal tempo blew them away. Then our discipline and defence repelled them time after time to close it out.
I don’t want to jinx next week or disparage the Tigers and Sharks, but it felt like that was our final; our biggest test of the season and thanks to that we will be hugely prepared for whatever comes our way at HQ.

Bad news, for the Marmion, is that Spencer was pretty isolated after the snipe so there was time to line up a legal jackal. But when you are under pressure on your own line, you gotta go for it.

Tend to agree, the most attacking team who were also able to defend, which was less expected. Feel we go into the final expecting a more 'normal' game and dictate the play more from the off. I know JvG wouldn't allow any complacency, but a tough semi does mean the players can take nothing for granted. Hope the knocks and twinges aren't too serious.
On Ridley, sounds like he had a decent game given the context. From the radio comm, sounded like he missed a couple of forward passes from Bris but, as has been said, he set the bar early with the reversed penalty (I love it when a ref does that - no nonsense, I'm the boss here!), avoided pedantry and let the game flow to become a spectacle, as it needed to be.
Fantastic atmosphere, game and result...well played Bristol & Bath
Did anyone see what happened between Finn and, I think, Williams which led to Finn's injury. They were tussling on the ground for some time and when parted Finn was clearly inhappy about something pointing to his leg.
Then as Finn left the field he was pointing at Williams who seemingly walked towards Finn to apologise but got the cold shoulder.
Williams fired low into a breakdown and caught Finn on the thigh. They then had a wrestle on the ground which led to the verbals as Finn went off. They were smiling and laughing about it after the game.
It was odd because Finn looked to have done something in the previous play after he’d tried to cross kick near their line, then ran it off. Then Williams’ clear out hit his thigh and he went down again. I think it might be a dead leg. It looked like he might have bruising around his thigh/knee. Either way, the medics didn’t seem concerned. No ice and he wasn’t rushed away. So I think it’s just a bang and I reckon he’ll be ok. But if not, we’ve got Ciaran and his 50:22s.
What a remarkable match - fair play to Bristol for their immense contribution.
As a Bath supporter I feel battered and bruised.
Tom Dunns post match appearance and comments sum everything up perfectly for me!

JvG: "He's in a bit of pain, he's got multiple parts of his body cramping – it's only cramp at this stage," said Van Graan.
"He put in some effort. I thought his goal kicking was phenomenal, the chases that he put in. He'll be fine, but he's still cramping in the changing room as we speak."
Ben Spencer emptied the tank as well. 8 days instead of 7 might well make a difference. For a fit guy to cramp so comprehensively indicates how much he wanted this.

Stone cold and beautiful response from JvG post match. Stating how proud we are of The Rec, roof or no roof, rain or shine, calling it his home, and then he dropped this…
“We certainly got a lot of motivation from Bristol. It is amazing, the more people give, the more we got. It was brilliant all the commentary we got from the opposition side. We didn’t say a word and the scoreboard speaks for itself and we’re in the Premiership final. Good luck to them for their off-season, I really hope they recover well.”
For a guy who keeps his emotions always in check, that’s a pretty revealing passage. Clearly Lam’s and Genge’s comments didn’t go unregistered in the Bath camp. Cheers guys.
BathMatt53 Well done Bath!!! Controlled the game better over the 80 and well worth the victory in the end. Well officiated.

Fantastic effort by all 23, that final 10 minutes was a bit nervy but thankfully we saw it through.
Does anyone know when Bath will release their ticket allocation for the big dance? Sale have said they will release theirs immediately after the match if they win.
I've got 2 secured but my little boy has announced he wants to come so looking to buy 3 and sell 2!
What a game. The intensity from both sides was immense, as were the skill levels of both sides. Bristol as we knew were irresistible in attack and their defence for the most was fearsome.
That 20 minutes after half time from Bath was just incredible and blew Bris away
I thought bearing in mind they were on a 6 day turnaround they looked fitter that us at the end with all our lads cramping up.
I had this horrible feeling that if they had scored 1 try towards the end it would have been an insanely tense last few minutes.
What a day and really looking forward to next week.
I think Borthwick needs to look at Miles Read & Superted who were immense. My lad said after the game that Read turned the game
Hope Randall recovers and all our lads are ok for next week.

Have to disagree here, Despite not being reflected on the board it appeared from around the 30 minute mark that Bath were starting to dominate physically. Of course Bristol drained the tank and made it hectic at the end -it’s a semi. But they made lots of mistakes because they were drained and we didn’t let up defensively.
A.M 180 Ridley very much tried to let things play out, so of course both fans will think there were things that were missed.

Odd that - because Luatua is not the Captain- that is Harding. Genge also seemed to make a few "captaincy" decisions as well as being in the ref's ear. Do Bristol divide the captain's on-field responsibilities?
The brilliant and aptly named "Butterflies and Bears" thread has consumed me. Anxiety and agitation has racked me all week, I'm not normally that sort but something about this game changed me. The day dragged yesterday, I arrived an hour earlier than usual, hoping to soak up the atmosphere and relax. No such luck and by half time I was in a state of shock, unable to say much or cheer the team on, "Butterflies and Bears" were winning. What happened next was unbelievable, or was it? The butterflies were exterminated and the Bears put down.
Others have said it, the greatest game at the Rec, the loudest, a memorable occasion. Amongst the intensity of the game some outstanding performances, Miles Reid take a bow, Van Rensberg the man of the match imho, Ravouvou almost unstoppable, Ted Hill take a bow.
We can be proud of this squad, with new faces next season and the academy lads we may be favourites again, I hope so.
Above all this the genius of JVG, the foresight to employ him, his assembly of assistants and the gracious and dignified way he presents himself something I hope we can build upon. Can he do for Bath what Jack Rowell did, I hope so. His kisses to the fans and pumping the Bath badge showed his delight, I really hope he and his family are settled in our beautiful city and his journey is extended.
So "Butterflies and Tigers" it might be, doesn't quite have the same ring about it. Me, I'm cured I hope, not expecting another week of anxiety and agitation, Twickenham tickets bought, here we go again.
Glad to see Francis posting - reading yesterday's posts, I was worried the "butterflies" were going to cause a medical incident!
I think Reid sums up everything that has been good about Bath this season; fully committed, head down and get on with doing the best he can. I'm sure he could've moved to another club, possibly for a bit more cash, ended up a started and possibly higher up the England pecking order, but clearly a passionate and selfless member of the Bath family.
Miles Reid did the Jaco Coetzee impact job perfectly to the point you wonder whether he starts. Alfie was pretty innocuous- the game was too fast paced for him and he took a bang on the head which might’ve contributed to that. If he’s fit next week, he really does need to up his game.
The Bristol board is as one eyed about the ref as we are on here. Good to see nothing changes. I thought that for all the ball slowing down in our part was offset by a lot of forward passes and later on the crossing taking out defenders. Plus Ravouvou was lucky as it looked like he was driving up. They were unlucky with Marmion’s card but Ibitoye was amazing stepping in.
They also said they were the better team for 60 minutes. I disagree about the final 20. We soaked up almost everything they kitchen sinked at us, kept them in their half for a lot of it and absorbed their attack when in our 22. It was a master class of defence, positional play and game management.

Yes, that how I viewed it, it was enhanced because not only did they need 3 tries, (they got one) but the Fact that they needed to convert the tries as Finn 's kicking was excellent.
We just kept shoving them further and further back.

I think Sale or Tigers will be much more Alfie's sort of game. He was great against Leicester at The Rec. I'd be tempted to Bomb Squad him though with Miles starting.
I missed this one at the Rec and thank goodness because I may have lost more than my voice. I had the first half on the radio in the car coming home from Kent and got home to catch the second half. A deficit of 7 points was clearly not insurmountable and we came out of the blocks hitting them hard and established a winning margin by 60 mins. The system works and credit to the team for keeping their heads and following JvG’s system.
Having caught up on the first half what a great game and well done to all participants. Thought the officials were very fair and neither team could claim they didn’t get the run of the green.
Bought my final tickets in December and looking forward to a great Bath - Leicester clash.
Shep58 Any word on Alfie's injury. He clearly had a shoulder problem as he walked around the pitch after the whistle. He looked very uncomfortable.
If that’s the case he looks to be out unfortunately which presumably means either Arthur Green or even Will Butt becomes a replacement. Fingers crossed for Finn. He is vital.
Bristol are a curious team. They were almost unplayable earlier in the season but then fell back alarmingly. On Friday I think they would have beaten any other team. Is it just that they cannot keep performing at that high octane level or is their defence prone to lapses? I don’t know if they are retaining their players but if so they will be a major threat next season.

Think there are options if needed.
Green as a straight swap but on bench with reid starting.
Richards in and bayliss covers reid as an 8.
Staddon in and bayliss covers reid as an 8.
Hopefully not needed but no really bad options there.
As a matter of interest with talk of Bayliss covering the backs is it never considered that someone like Butt, who seems to have all the attributes, could cover 7 or 8 or is that far too specialist?
I mean, having him at 8 is just a total non-starter, and then as for 7, you're ceeding more by not having a specialist back row on the pitch than potentially dropping a back
This could be where Bailey enters the mix instead of Donoghue

It's a valid point Shippie - as little disruption to the 23 as possible is probably the way to go, and can see Donoghue being a bit of a Hendy figure in the game
I don't think JVG will have any issues backing Green if Alfie really is out of the mix. Honestly wouldn't put it past him to start either if Johan fancies having Miles' impact in his back pocket.

Yes, a good point and one where it can go from exiting a semi on a high and being closed out at the final. But I think with that game, it was England dominating everywhere for almost all of the game. For us, it was Bristol dominating the first half and us dominating the second, giving us a much more sterner test that we had to figure out how to win at half time. I’m hoping that gives us the preparation we need for Saturday. Tigers will be more of a threat up front and a more linear style of backs play. We’ve shown we can deal with that throughout the season as well as the chaos that the likes of Bristol and Quins throw out. Like I said, I have risked jinxing it now as it’s knockout rugby again and on the day, anyone can play.
Hope Alfie's ok, if not I think JVG will bring Arthur Green into the squad. From what I've seen of him he is a natural for the 8 position, start him then bring Miles on with the bomb squad.
I think green in for alfie as a starter with reid off the bench is the most likely option if needed and prob sensible. Would be some season for green going from benching for eng u20 to starting s prem final!
Next option I think is reid to start and richards on the bench.
We subbed both roux and ewels on Friday, wouldn't need to move hill up if we did that again.
Could use bayliss to come on for any of hill, pepper, reid.
Richards is a natural 6 for me and nearly as athletic as super ted. Would certainly have an impact off bench.
Back row would be Hill Pepper Reid Baylis and Richards if Alfie crocked surely.
If JvG hold Richards back for Prem games would he throw a green Green into our most important game of the season in front of a Scotland international with a knack of scoring vital tries. Richards captained the Prem side to a cup remember.

I think it's a close call as to what they would do personally.
Green is most 'like for like'.
Bayliss has played a fair bit at 8 but totally different player to alfie and green.
As you know I LOVE Richards so getting him on definitely appeals.
Depends what jvg and team want....

Not sure if I've seen this mentioned so far, but did anyone witness the altercation between Fitz Harding and one of the Bath players mid way through the 2nd half? Couldn't see what started it, but ended with Harding performing some quasi wrestling move on our player off the ball. He looked like he'd completely lost his head (I couldn't possibly guess what/who would have got him so emotional though...)
They showed a single replay on the big screen at the time and it got a reasonably damning reaction from the crowd, but the officials weren't interested.
There was a bit of a scuffle between VV and Harding, and Bayliss got involved and gave Harding a shove, and Harding fell into VV. Don't know what started it but it was Bayliss' fault if anyone's!
If Alfie is out, I would go with Reid starting and Richards and Bayliss on the bench but I've a feeling JvG will involve the young lad, Green. JvG loves an out and out carrier in the back row and Alfie, Coetzee, and Green tick that box. Green is green (lol) but he's impressed when he's played and the fact his role is simple (just carry carry carry) makes his inclusion, given his inexperience, a bit less of a risk. Would be tough on Richards- but I've a feeling Green will be at 23... if not 8!
Having said that, I think Alfie will be ok. He was holding his shoulder/arm gingerly after he came off but was still walking around, smiling etc. If it was worse, he'd have been much more careful with it. Would be such a shame if he's out after what happened last year, so fingers crossed.

Great suggestion! Will give that a read at some point.
I wonder where all the Bristol posters have gone that were so vocal on this forum back in October...
The Bristol board is superb. I just love rugby- only such a silly game would allow the ref to always be so wrong, from both sides. For every "never a yellow card" or "Bath slowed our ball down all day" I'll give you "Ravouvou is a nailed on red".
I especially like the moaning about "snide" comments on social media from Bath fans... when on the same board there are (at least) three posters saying they "hate" us. I'd rather be snide than full of hate, quite frankly... but I suppose that comment is somewhat snide!
It's just rationalisation I think, not quite sure why there should be a dispute as to whether the Cokansiga try was grounded though, it's pretty clear I thought.

I don't think anyone other than Leinster has demonstrated they can cope with out strength in depth. Being a tad disrespectful to Dan Cole and Ben Youngs I don't think Tigers' Veteran Squad will be able to compete with our Bomb Squad:
Clare 31 Annett 34
Cronin 34 Van Wyk 33
Cole 38 Du Toit 30
Rogerson 31 Molony 31
Illone 23 Reid 26
Youngs 35 TCS 23
Volavola 34 Donoghue 22
Perese 28 Bayliss 27
Personally I don’t think we should be posting stuff about Tigers that can be hung up in their dressing room on Saturday and Dan Cole is still a superb scrummager.

They have the potential to match our strengths whereas Briz were able to highlight our weaknesses. We dealt with the latter, now what can we do when our strengths are nullified? It's a Premiership Final, anything can happen and both teams will take to the field with the score 0-0. As ever with these things on the day it will be the toss of a coin (see Saints vs Leinster or Obano's red last year). It's going to be a fantastic contest and I am 100% sure that both teams and management will go into it with absolutely nothing but respect for their opponents.

As if!
Maybe if JvG said it.
But he won't.
PS I bet Dan Cole still has nightmares about South African looseheads after the 2019 RWC final. There's a thought: If DC is (still) so good, TdT and Griffin on the bench, like in the Edinburgh game?

Thanks for sharing WT, puts to bed a number of blurry elements of the game for me:
1. Ravouvou's trip looks pretty deliberate
2. Ravouvou's high shot not as bad as it looked in the ground
3. Fitz Harding's scuffle with FVW was more comical than I appreciated at the time
Mike the Taxi Any chance of a penalty try against Tigers, a la May 1996?
I was there in the South Stand that day and it happened right in front of me. I was sat with a mass of Leicester junior players in full club finery and they were absolute gentlemen about it. My Tigs supporting friends post match? Not so much...

We couldn't have been far from each other: we were in the South Stand, 5 rows from the dead ball line, with the Bath maul rolling towards us. Being my first 'modern' game, I didn't realise it was a penalty try, and wondered why my mates were all jumping up and down! Not a bad initiation to Bath Rugby, eh?
I was just as surprised to be offered cans of beer and burgers, and calls of 'well done', as we walked back to the Rosebine car park, by Tigers supporters!
I watched the full game properly last night and really don't get the 'Bristol were dominant' for the first half, or 60 minutes comments.
Bristol barely touched the ball for the first 12 minutes and their first penalty was completely against the run of play. We had already been held up over the line and spent time in their 22 by then. They had one attack before their try, and we turned them over, kicked long, and they scored a wonder try.
Rovouvou then tripped Spencer, when Bath were attacking, and later in the half was extremely lucky not to get a second yellow when Bath were again on the attack. (He started low and drove up into Alfie's head with clear contact from shoulder to head.)
Bristol's defence was excellent during the half, and when they had the ball they threatened, but they were not dominant, it was a pretty even half overall.
On reflection, I feel similar, DB. A lot of the analysis has been that it's ONLY because of Bath's bench and squad depth (and £££) that we were able to pull away in the second half. Otherwise, it was all Bristol wit and guile and genius, which was unlucky to run into our powerful bench.
First, it's an 80 minute game, so feel free to only play for a half but you might get beaten in the second period- and if you're playing a game plan that only works for half an hour, you likely need a new game plan. Also a lot of the excellent stuff we did in the first half (grinding them, kick chase, scramble defence and discipline) won it in the second half. So we were very good in the first half, too.
Secondly, our bench was probably stronger, but they had plenty of internationals on their bench too. So, "Bath's bench won it" is likely true but shouldn't really excuse Bristol's inability to keep the squeeze on or adapt or score more than 7 in the second half.
And, finally, bench and squad depth (and £££) aside, we're a bloody good team. Ok, we didn't score a length of the field worldie, and we play a less headline-grabbing style of game than they do, but both sides of the ball we were better- better at executing, better fitness, better game management, better disciplined. I really love Bristol- not an ounce of hate at all- they're absolutely brilliant for the league, but cos they have an angry man who "hates" us as much as he loves the spot light, some Fijians who like to run and a DoR who ridigly sticks to that as their game plan, they seem to get an outsize amount of attention for being the league's "darlings". We've been top of the league all season. We've got better attack and defence than everyone. And in the end we crushed the darlings. In short, we're waaaaaay more than a bench and squad depth (and £££).
NB- I'm eternally thankful for Bruce's extremely helpful money and I'm very nervous about Saturday!
Dorset Boy I watched the full game properly last night and really don't get the 'Bristol were dominant' for the first half, or 60 minutes comments.
Yeah, watching the first half this morning feels very different to Friday night.
I suspect it's because Bristol were looking to attack, ball in hand, from anywhere, whilst we were trying to be more structured, kick for territory and build an attack from there.
In the first half, we had clean possession inside their 22 on 5 separate occasions*, for 18 phases, getting within 10m of their try line twice, and being held up once.
They've had clean possession inside our 22 4 times**, for 6 phases - although 3 of those occasions they reached out 5m line (including 0 phases for the 5m line-out they threw beautifully to Roux)
This season, I don't think our squad has looked that much more expensive than anyone else's. Bristol apparently spend £3m less, but I'd say the teams on Friday were fairly evenly matched. They've saved money on squad size as opposed to quality.
It's only Stuart, Russell and Lawrence who are regularly being picked for international duty.
I wouldn't have been upset if van Rensburg had been given MOTM, he was fantastic.
I'm ok with the Stuart rating - generally our lot were great and he was by no means bad but he had a couple of dopey moments so if the rest of them were averaging an 8, a 6 seems fair for him.
We lost a lineout in the first half and it occurred to me how rarely that's an issue these days, having been a relative weakness not so long ago. Real improvement there.
Dunn must have quietly snuck in a few rounds with Mike Tyson between rucks, the way he looked coming off. What a hero.
hasta On player ratings, Planet Rugby have started showing a scale for the basis of their ratings and I really appreciate it
Yes that's really useful. Too often these days people see a 6 as a 'poor' score rather than above average / expected.
In the same way we rarely see 3s or 4s - I would have given Pollard a 4 at the weekend personally because kicking out of hand and for the posts is key to his role and he had a nightmare. Ford probably got a 5 - technically fine but didn't really influence that much?
hasta On player ratings, Planet Rugby have started showing a scale for the basis of their ratings and I really appreciate it:
...that being said they also picked Pollard ahead of Russell in their team of the week which is truly insane.
There's always problems with such simple definitions of scale. A player could, for example have a moment of ill discipline or a costly error and yet still significantly impact on the result [in a positive way obvs]
But the flippin heck they put Pollard over Russell is a complete mystery to me
Its not the metric tough with player ratings its who complies them. If its one person's opinion then it depends on their rugby knowledge and if they were at the game or influenced by commentary for example.
I prefer the player rating from multiple sources, fans comments that sort of thing.
