DEPARTURE OF LATU MAKAAFI

Jersey Rugby Club have confirmed that Latu Makaafi has been released from his contract and will be leaving the Island.

The Tongan flanker was one of Jersey's first professional players in 2006, playing for the Island side in London Two South for two seasons and then returning in summer 2013, by which stage Jersey were playing four levels higher in the Greene King IPA Championship.

"Latu has been in discussion with us during the close season regarding his wife's wish to return to the north of England to be closer to her family," said Jersey Chairman Bill Dempsey. "His family is Latu's priority and the club have no wish to stand in his way - we have agreed to release him from his contract so he can make the move with his wife and children.

Shame to hear he's going. Perhaps seen more as an impact player laterly but he was an important part of the squad. Following Tom Brown's departure, the back row is now looking wafer thin. Hopefully Harvey has this in mind. I wonder if Messrs Hodson and Haining have arrived yet?

An understandable if unwanted departure.

He was a great impact player, seems strange the decisions come a month after pretty-seasons started. Perhaps not what HB is looking for? Who knows.

I saw him as I drove past the club today and really feel for the guy. He loved it here but family comes first and I wish him well for the future. I hope Roth, Donny or Yorkies snap him up but if he he ends up in Wharfdale or DMP I will still hope to see him again. Definitely one of the very best we have been lucky enough to play for Jersey.
