Connacht 23-20 Bourgoin - Connacht Topple Bourgoin

By Rob Murphy @ Knockon.ie
April 13 2010

A beautiful day, some breathless rugby and our Connacht team talked the talk and walked the walk as they took another step forward in their development by dispatching a strong Bourgoin side in the Amlin Challenge Cup 1/4 Final at the Sportsground. Rob Murphy was on hand to catch the key moments...

Connacht 23
Bourgoin 20

By Rob Murphy

Let the good times roll. This particular chapter of Connacht rugby history is far from finished but on a glorious afternoon last Saturday, new heights were reached and the years of torment must have seemed like a distant memory to supporters of the western province.

Rugby in the west is alive with anticipation. The superstars from Toulon are booking their flights as we speak, Galway is bracing itself for a rugby mad May bank holiday weekend as this incredibly defiant young team continue to defy the odds.

Unbeaten in Galway since September, unbeaten in Europe this season, winning games in the last ten minutes, punching holes at will in the best defenses in the northern hemisphere, nailing clutch drop goals, bulldozing experienced packs and out-sprinting back lines. The quality of rugby is merely adding to the whole excitement.

This was as hard fought as you get. Connacht could have stormed to victory had they nailed their chances before half time but as with all French sides, when Bourgoin were allowed a route back into the contest they took it and perked up their intensity as a result.

In the second half they turned the game on its head and led by six. The energy was with them, Connacht were slumping and like so often before, the brave effort appeared to be coming up short. Then came that defiance, it’s a sort of confidence that even when things are going awry they can still find away to win.

The final 20 minutes of the contest saw Connacht wrestle their way back into a proceedings. Their incisive attacks turned the tide and Miah Nikora came on to notch the scores to level matters and than held his nerve to win the contest with a never to be forgotten drop goal.

The diminutive kiwi has is own little corner in the hall of Connacht rugby folklore now. The elation that swept around the 3,500 crowd would move even the stiffest neck hairs. The sea of green that greeted the players must have been uplifting from the outset but it was at its brightest at that stage.

Connacht deserved this victory. Tough calls had been made in selection with four of their recent walking wounded returning. Keith Matthews and Niva Ta’auso in the centres and the back row pair of captain John Muldoon and George Naoupu. All were touch and go last week but they couldn’t have been more influential on proceedings.

Let’s start with the monstrous Naoupu. He hit every moveable object within reach during the contest. He carried with immense success, his ball presentation and off-loads were on a different level to Bourgoin. Two knock-ons were his only negative points in an otherwise flawless display.

Add to that the efforts of John Muldoon who scored the second try and showed no signs of the injury which has held him out for two weeks. He was once again the great leader he has been all season and with Johnny O’Connor in the form of his life for the province and Naoupu, Connacht dominated the back row.

Set piece play again worked well, Michael Swift and Sean Cronin carried superbly in the tight, Swift hit rucks as hard as ever and the back line were feeding off this. While Ian Keatley was called ashore at just the right time he contributed enormously to the contest in the first half.

Connacht led through Swift’s early try. That came from a sustained attack on the visitors line and patient yard gaining from the pack. Connacht would have been 14-0 clear and cruising had Frank Murphy’s break led to a try with a four on one situation going awry when Mike McCarthy knocked on. The wrong options had been taken before that.

Bourgoin then notched the softest of tries through hooker Kopalani who burst through a gap in the ruck but crucially their response was to regain the tempo straight away. Muldoon’s try came from another rock solid lineout and a deft and intelligent move in midfield where Naoupu set for a maul but popped the ball out the backdoor to Matthews.

Bourgoin trained 14-10 at the break but in Benjamin Boyet they had a real match winner, he had kicked a conversion and penalty before the break and added another penalty before scrum half John Seino scored his side’s second try midway through the half to edge them in front by six points.

Connacht got a break with a Nikora penalty straight after that and then Troy Nathan stepped up to the mark with a barnstorming break that paved the way for penalty number two for the replacement out half. The roar swept across the city as the home support sensed a sea change and their team duly delivered. Again.

The green flags will be popping up all over the provinces in the coming weeks. Galway will hopefully turn into a sea of Connacht colours before the Toulon visit. In the meantime there is the small matter of a Heineken Cup place at stake in the Magners League.

Next up, Munster in Galway on Sunday. No rest but these are wicked times all the same.

"...as Connacht bid to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition for the first time"

Who the hell writes this stuff?? Surely the Parker Pen is counted as being the same competition as the Amlin...

Another point, Brian Touhy is very unlucky not to be included in the squad, he has had a shaky start to his time here, he was flawless against Edinburgh from what I saw.

Bernie Upton on the bench, he will make an appearance, and he was another great player in the Edinburgh game.

The lads left out of the squad (Browne, Nolan, Touhy...) shows that we finally have that bit of depth in our squad. All things look promising for tomorrow, Bourgoin arent to be underestimated but I cant think of anything else than a Connacht win. C'mon Connacht!!!

Happy enough with that. Bernie Upton a bit unlucky maybe but can offer us a lot off the bench. Any news on the Bourgoin team?

I'm seriously excited about tomorrow. I've been doing my best to convince friends and colleagues to come to the sportsground, and I know most of the regular posters on here have been doing the same. Hopefully that, combined with the promise of a sunny afternoon (http://www.rte.ie/weather) will result in a large crowd to roar the team on to victory.

Youngblood I agree with you on Touhy, and I think I'd have started with Upton, but the squad looks good so hopefully Brads will use the subs to good affect.

Agreed about Upton, but in including Mike Mac and Swifty we have a lot of mobility in the pack which may be Brads tactic against a team which are pretty physical upfront.

Otherwise happy with the selection. Shame Ray is absent, means Johnny will likely play a full 80. Thankfully he has had had his best two games this season (IMO) in the run up to this one.

Have nine newcomers coming the SG with me tomorrow. Hope the lads put on a performance to keep them coming back.

Left out the word "home" before semi-final?? Not had a home semi-final before so may it's just a typo.

Strong team, strong bench. I'm trying to stay calm.

Would be a typo if they meant "Bid to land a home semi" but they said "bid to qualify for..." which seems to indicate it was just your average ignorance.

But, hey-ho, it's journalism, so it doesn't need to be true

From ERC website:

Bourgoin aim to go one better
7 April 2010, 11:48 am

Bourgoin went within touching distance of lifting the Amlin Challenge Cup last May - and former French international outside half Benjamin Boyet is adamant they intend to turn the disappointment of a year ago into delight this time.
The French club, the inaugural winners of the tournament in 1997, were denied the double when they went down 15-3 to Northampton Saints at the Twickenham Stoop.

Now they are set to face Connacht Rugby at the Galway Sportsground in the first of the Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-finals knowing the winner will enjoy home advantage in the semi-finals three weeks later.

”We are thrilled to be going to Ireland for our Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-final because it is such a breath of fresh air compared to our domestic league and, since we seem to be doing well in Europe more than on a national level, then there is a lot to be played for,” he said.

”Just like last year it is a competition in which we hope to go as far as possible – and even go one better than last year! That’s the plan anyway. We really want to do well and qualify for the semi-finals because the incentive is that we could potentially host the semi-final at Stade Pierre Rajon and we would love to again offer that to our fans. We are most certainly aiming to make the final because it is such a great moment to experience.

Boyet is a loyal one-club player and has scored 305 points for Bourgoin in 49 appearances spread over 11 seasons in European club rugby’s two elite tournaments.

”Recently we lost to Toulon in the Top 14 but we could be facing them again in the Amlin Challenge Cup – should we both go through to the semis,” he said.

”That would be an interesting situation and, since we don’t approach our European games the same way as our domestic games, then who knows what could happen? If that were to be the case we would play them at home and the pressure on us would be different to a Top 14 scenario. Our fate wouldn’t depend on winning an Amlin Challenge Cup game but we take this seriously and any victory is good for the club records. At this stage we’ve reached our objective in Europe so anything after that is a real treat and bonus.

”I have found the level this year in the Amlin Challenge Cup is much higher and it’s been progressing that way for a while now. Apart from Connacht and us at Bourgoin, who are struggling in our own league, the other competing clubs are doing well in their championship. This goes to show how important this is."

”And there is a lot to take from this competition. Whatever positive experience our players get from playing high level international games can only benefit our game in the Top 14 so it’s a win-win situation as far as we are concerned. "

”Despite the fact that we have four or five players in our squad who are injured long-term and who won’t even be able to finish the season, we have the resources to be competitive by presenting a full strength team to face our next opponents in Galway. "

”We have never played them before so it’ll be interesting and travelling doesn’t give us any sort of complex so we can only prepare ourselves to the best of our abilities and remain focused on the rewards and enjoy the day."

”My best Amlin Challenge Cup memory is last season’s home win in the semis against Worcester and it would be great to add to that on Saturday.”

I disagree, he was caught rotten for Leinsters first try at the RDS. I think they are looking for the player who is better defensively for this game.

Yeah, Tuohy has finally started to come on lately, but it was mentioned that Bradley would likely go with Nathan as the more solid defensive option against the big Bourgoin wing.

Agree with others that Upton could easily be starting, but again nice to have him coming of the bench.

It never mattered what sort of side Bourgoin put out, as long as Connacht continue to play the sort of rugby they have been playing recently they should have the measure of them. It is important though to keep the scoreboard ticking over. It cost them the Leinster and nearly the Edinburgh game. If it keeps up sides won't get disheartened if they go down early to Connacht since they'll know they can get back in it easy enough.

Ya more than ever tomorrow a good start is necessary. Its a strong Bourgoin lineup and if things go well for them early on we may find it hard to get back in the game. However if we can get a start like the first 12 minutes last Friday or we can build a bit of an early cushion they might look at the prospect of facing 2 tough league games in quick succession and think that trying to recover the situation isn't as important as their domestic issues.

The lack of national media attention for this match is shocking. Normally we get decent ink from the two main papers thanks to Messrs Farrelly and Thornley, but there's been more articles about Ulster's game on Tuesday than about ours today. Not a word on rte.ie either.

I'm a bit worried about cover on the wings, Bibo is a big loss. If one of our back 3 takes a knock and has to come off we'll look very disjointed. Would much prefer to see Troy at 13 too, I hope they don't target him with kicks.

Team Support Message

I remember pulling on my own Connacht jersey when I was selected for Connacht Under 16s many, many years ago. I'm 36 now and still playing but representing this part of the world remains the highlight of my career.

There are thousands of us, young and old who would give anything to be pulling on that jersey with you on Saturday. Thousands who wish they were able to run onto that pitch and stand with you. Thousands who wish we could be the one's making the tackles, the breaks, the decisions - making the difference.

But against Bourgoin, only you have that opportunity. The jersey is yours. Only you get to run on to our field and represent us. And you get to make the difference for all of us.

We're proud of you. We're confident in you who represent us.

So be proud of yourselves and have confidence Connacht. You wear our jersey on merit. You are the best of all of us. And you can carry us all to victory.

Connacht keep the dream alive

Sat, Apr 10, 2010

Connacht 23 Bourgoin 20: A last-gasp drop goal from the boot of Miah Nikora has earned Connacht a place in the last four of the Amlin Challenge Cup after a gripping encounter at the Sportsground. Nikora showed his coolness under pressure, kicking two penalties and the match-winning drop goal.

When scrum-half John Senio sniped through for Bourgoin’s second try, converted by Benjamin Boyet, the French side led 20-14 and looked poised to defeat the number one seeds at the quarter-final stage for the second year running.

London Irish fell to them twelve months ago, but Connacht, aided by a yellow card for Boyet, raised their game superbly in the final 20 minutes, with their forwards doing the hard graft and Nikora nailing his kicks.

Penalties in the 66th and 73rd minutes levelled an absorbing tie and following a series of pick-and-goes from the home pack, the Kiwi out-half knocked over a well-struck drop goal to earn Connacht a gritty victory — their eighth on the trot at home.

Michael Bradley’s men faced into a blustery wind in the opening half and Boyet had two early penalty attempts from the 45-metre range which he pushed to the right.

Connacht hit the front on the quarter-hour. The destructive George Naoupu bulldozed across the gain-line, Ian Keatley knocked a penalty to touch and experienced lock Michael Swift, with support from Brett Wilkinson, crashed over to the left of the posts.

Keatley landed the conversion but failed to punish France international Olivier Milloud for a scrum offence ten minutes later as his penalty effort drifted away from the target.

Connacht had their tails up but they missed out on a certain try in the 27th minute. Scrum-half Murphy got a favourable bounce as he chased his own kick but, with the Bourgoin rearguard completely stretched, lock Mike McCarthy knocked on with the line in his sights.

The hosts paid the price just three minutes later as Bourgoin shunned a kickable penalty and hooker Tone Kopelani was able to burst clean through the middle of a ruck and dive over in the right corner, with Boyet converting.

A foot in touch robbed Keatley of a try after good work by Niva Ta’auso and captain John Muldoon was also called back for a knock-on as Connacht pressed for their second try.

They did not have long to wait as, five minutes before the break, a wrap-around move involving Kiwi Naoupu in midfield put centre Keith Matthews roaring through a gap and he drew the cover to send Muldoon powering over for a converted score.

Boyet kicked Bourgoin back to 14-10 as half-time approached and although a late, pacy break from full-back Gavin Duffy engineered a penalty for Keatley, his drilled attempt from wide on the right faded in the difficult wind.

Bourgoin made changes for the second half, the most significant seeing Boyet reverting to full-back and Sebastien Laloo introduced. Indiscipline from Connacht soon allowed Boyet kick the first of two early penalty attempts, making it 14-13.

The wind-backed hosts struggled for territory and Bourgoin took a deserved lead in the 58th minute when Senio spotted a mismatch on the 22, darted through a gap and dotted down despite the best efforts of Duffy.

Boyet converted and the game seemed to be slipping from Connacht’s grasp as Keatley missed a penalty from distance.

However, with Sean Cronin, Swift, Muldoon and Johnny O’Connor putting in heroic displays, Connacht rose to the challenge. As Murphy looked to pass left from a ruck in front of the Bourgoin posts, Boyet slapped the ball out of his hands and a yellow card was the only option.

Nikora, on for Keatley, landed the resulting penalty and, after Laloo had missed a drop goal, the Connacht replacement rewarded his forwards with the levelling penalty.

The momentum was clearly with Connacht now and, having missed a drop from further out just two minutes earlier, Nikora was right on the money with his 79th-minute attempt to send the westerners through to the last four of Challenge Cup for the first time since 2005.

Well done lads. Tense right up until the final whistle. Great character to come back after a ropey period in the 2nd half. We'll need to cut out some of the slopiness if we are hoping to get to the final but that's for another day, We've won coming from behind for the second week in succession and there's more left in the tank. Enjoying watching the other quarters now and with Leinster and Munster both winning HC rugby is edging closer.

Great performances from Cronin, JOC, Naoupu(we need to keep this guy), Swifty and Ta'auso in particular. Great effort from the pack as a whole though and everyone played their part.

Also special cograts to Nikora who after a shaky start is starting to become something of a cult figure after the last two weeks.

Decent crowd with good atmosphere, hopefully they'll all be back again.

According to gbfm this evening, the draw will be on Monday.10-6 to Toulon v Scarlets at the moment.

Well done, well done! So proud of wearing my Connacht jersey around, need to be more clinical though. But lets not take anything away from this right now, great victory, well played lads. Having Muldoon back was awesome (but to be fair to him, McComish did everything asked of him plus more in the recent games). Really incredible what Connacht are achieving these days, and they deserve every bit of it. I hope that this winning mentallity stays with them, because all we had was a want to win attitude (this might seem stupid) but now as Vince Lombardi suggests that winning becomes a habit, thats what we are finally seeing for the first time in Connacht. Im after quite a skinfull of drinks writting this, but just want to say that im proud of my provience and that our rugby team is making me even more proud. Go on Connacht!!!

I think everyone's confused dumdum. Seems to be a lot of conflicting information flying around. From what I heard on the radio this evening the draw is on Monday. I think this might be right as say for example if Gloucester beat Wasps and Cardiff beat Newcastle tomorrow there would be 2 hc teams in the semis and the two challenge cup teams must get home advantage, therefore we couldn't fact Toulon.

We're guaranteed home advantage is the only thing we do know.

Toulon are 23-12 up against Llanelli at the moment.

Another great win for the lads. Nervous time again with them being unable to push on with an early lead, but hopefully that will come as winning becomes more of a habit.

It probably will be Toulon with the confusing talk about a draw only deciding home advantage should both Gloucester and Cardiff win.

I'll be interested to see what kind of team both Munster and Connacht name for next weekend. They are not guaranteed a top four finish so I imagine Munster name a fairly strong squad. Does Bradley let them off the hook a bit by resting some of the players after the past couple of emotional weeks or does he decide to take advantage of the winning run and go for the win?

Munster will be interesting alright but the positive from a Connacht point of view of late is that a lot more players are putting their hands up for selection.

Robbie Morris hasn't seen much action in recent times so is a perfect candidate to start against Munster, Bernie Upton has come off the bench mostly in recent times and should be fairly fresh, Andrew Browne is on the road back from injury, JOC has played a fair bit recently but not much prior to that, Tuohy could possibly come back in again, Nikora is improving by the game, Aidan Wynne can do a job. Adrian Flavin, McComish, O'Loughlin etc. Obviously not all them changes but we can mix it up a bit. However, I wouldn't want to be the one telling Sean Cronin, John Muldoon or these lads that they wouldn't start against Munster.

I certainly feel much more confident in our ability to make a few changes and still have a competitive team than was the case for the game at Christmas. Its tricky in the position we're in as Munster is another showcase game for Connacht Rugby but at the same time I think Llanelli the following week is possibly more winnable and Toulon the following week is the biggest game in years so we'll have to assess the situation in terms of injuries and so on and plan accordingly. Its a case of managing our resources as best we can but most importantly with the current run the entire squad should have a pep in their step going into training early next week.

Also Ulster will have played two matches before next Sunday so we'll know a lot more then about where we stand. If Ulster get 6 or more points which is quite possible it might just push them too far ahead in terms of the hc spot.

Cant speak highly enough of JOC, epic performance, just wish that he was given the ball for an oppertunity close to the line in the first half (frank murphy gave it to Matthews, but to be fair, JOC was being closed down so who knows in the end..), should be way more decisive, but great victory all round. Jamie Hagan is proving himself to be of internatinal class every week. Future Iish prop no doubt... its great having the future of Irish rugby here, Carr, Hagan, Keatley, Cronin, O'Haloran, Griffin (sure why not Wilkonsin, Muldoon & McCarty as well).... we have a future for Irish rugby, let them take note...

great win today... but very confused over semi draw, lots of people saying its the winner of toulon/scarlets, others saying its an open draw...
according to erc website

"Amlin Challenge Cup Semi-final Pairings
Winner of ECC 1 v ECC 5 quarter-final v winner of first quarter-final drawn
Winner of second quarter-final drawn v winner of third quarter-final drawn

Amlin Challenge Cup teams to have home advantage, otherwise home advantage
decided by draw."

can anybody clear this up??

Basically according to the website the draw will go as follows:

Connacht v First team drawn out of hat.

Second team drawn out of hat v third team drawn out of hat

With us (Cardiff) being away even if we are the second team out of the hat because we qualified from the HEC not the Amlin.

Hope that helps

Just watching the game coverage from Sky Sports. Anyone know what the official attendance was? Been looking around, but can't find it.

ERC website has us down to meet Toulon on Friday 30th, though this could mean weekend of the 30th.

Wonderful performance from the lads. We can win this thing. Toulon will be distracted by the French Championship.

Crowd given as round figure of 3,500 on erc rugby which is respectable enough. Looking at the fixtures I reckon Wasps will be the early game Sunday. With Leinster on the middle of the day Saturday I think Friday evening might be a possibility.

Edit: Sky schedule has one game down for Friday evening.

Some poor planning on my part means I'm going to be away on holidays until the Sunday morning, so I'm praying for a Sunday afternoon fixture. Fingers crossed!

Hi All,

I heard something about the sportsground not being suitable for the semi, didn't hear a reason though, did anybody else hear anything??

Hi Hanrob, good to see you back on the boards. Lots a conjecture and I for one don't know who to believe. Logically there's no reason we shouldn't be playing on our own patch but what's logic got to do with anything.

It's down to the IRFU to make the call from what I understand. John Mul was adamant in todays times that it won't move. He said the players would instigate a sit in if this was tried.

Just a case of wait and see I guess.

If attendance was going to be 10-15,000 there would be some logic to a move, but I wouldn't expect such a crowd. Does anyone know what can the capacity of the Sportsground can be pushed to with temporary stands and the like?

Think there was a mention of 8K back a few years ago before the quins home semi game....or was it 6K?? Temporary stands at either end of the ground. I believe money determines. If we thought we'd get 10K there, I'm sure they'd get the seats in!

good to be back seapoint any where but the sportsground would be awful, i'm sure for the munster games we've had upwards of 8,000. anyway if it numbers they worried about i'd much rather see a full to capacity sports ground than a 3/4 full pearce stadium or thomand park!!!

I doubt it. The we had massive crowds for Sale & 'Quins a few years back and they were somewhere between 5K-6K.
2/04/05 Connacht 18 - 25 Sale Sharks Att: 5,800
25/4/04 Connacht 23 - 18 Harlequins Att: 6,000

Interestingly, Munster are usually our highest gate of the season.
Season Date Time Away TV/Att

08/09 Sun 28 Dec 18:00 Munster 5,000
07/08 Fri 28 Mar 19:30 Munster 5,368
06/07 Sun 31 Dec 16:00 Munster 4,560

Fantastic day at the Sportsground on Saturday, the sports and weather gods were smilig on us for sure.

I'm in two minds on the subject of where the Semi against Toulon should be played. It's great to bring the big games to Galway and the uniqueness of the Sportsground is an advantage also. But I can also see the merit in moving to a bigger ground to maximise the draw of a team containing some big name players Contepomi, Wilkinson, Tana Umaga, Joe Van Niekirk for starters and well known players like Tom May (Falcons), Sebastien Bruno (Sale) and also Munster prop Timmy Ryan ...

Toulon are not a traditional French team in their current squad makeup, it's very multi-national so I don't think they will be too perturbed playing a game out of France. So it may be a waste of an opportunity to generate some much needed revenue (for squad strengthening/ ground improvement next season).

With the right marketing and ticket pricing this fixture could generate a crowd far far bigger than the 6,500 that attended the Quins game. As long as season ticket holders are given priority and the right multiple of tickets to purchase we can ensure that the Core Connacht support is in place where ever it's played. Both Leinster & Munster are drawn away in the HEC Semi-finals so there's and opportunity to tap into their Event Junkie support element. If at Thomond the opportunity of abusing Contepomi and seeing Timmy Ryan in action would probably bring in 5k additional to what we bring down there, and in Dublin there'd definitely be e a big crowd to see Contepomi/Wilkinson & Umaga...

I'm not saying we have to go for it, but were we to lose at the Sportsground even with the biggest possible crowd there how much would it generate (say 7,000 at an average price of 17.50) after all the expenses are taken out...?? Could be a missed opportunity, and especially if we do qualify for the HEC next year by either of the other possible options ...

No easy answer ...

I'm in two minds as well, it would be great for local business having a CC semi-final weekend, but seeing as local business couldn't care less about Connacht rugby I wonder if they deserve it.

Still, a trip to Thomond wouldn't be too bad if you're in Galway, but a trip down from Sligo to Limerick is a bit unfair on the other Connacht fans. I'm sure they'd still do it considering the occasion, but it's not ideal.

The City as a rule probably doesn't, but then how do you change the mindset..??

Sorta have to ask would the Sligo supporters get to Thomond or the RDS if the final was held there...?? It's a European Semi Final and your province are in it, you're either up for it or not I guess. I travelled from rural Surrey on Thursday last into Dublin then drove to Galway on Friday and back on Sunday. To get something out of these games you have to make an effort I'm afraid, well worth it though for days like these...

Agreed we ask the players at the very least to make an effort on the pitch. So Why then is it not fair to ask the supporters to travel to a larger capacity stadium (more money for CB as a by the way) albeit, TP, RDS for example. I wont have a problem travelling i can tell you that i'm going 80 mins anyway whats another hour and a half?

If it benifits CONNACHT to move out of the SG for the SF and its ok with players / management then its SHOULD be ok with everyone else.

Always remember FOLLOW your team with pride.

No matter how far one has to travel.

I think they're right to stage the game in Galway. I think that while the fans of other provinces want Connacht to succeed it wouldn't necessarily translate to a much bigger gate. Especially with the game down for a Friday evening, I wouldn't see much more than the regular supporters making the trip with the game on the telly. Sad but realistic.

I think we have to continue to work on a Connacht brand and that may involve taking a loss by holding it at the Sportsground but looking towards next season if we were to qualify for the hc, a game against someone like Toulouse/Leicester or one of these teams would generate a bigger interest than the Challenge Cup S/F and again there would be a call to move the game to Thomond Park or the RDS.

We might have a poor ground but I'd rather play the game in our home ground rather than playing such a huge game for the province elsewhere. We can tap into local business and it provides us with an opportunity to go to these businesses and get them signed up for sponsorship etc.

The game is fixed for the Sportsgrounds now and 7.45 on a Friday is manageable for the majority of supporters so its a case of managing this. Again its important to price the game reasonably, we can find other ways of getting people to part with their money once inside the ground. I think anything more than 30 would be pushing it. We'll get the crowd I'd imagine regardless but we need to turn this extra crowd into repeat supporters.

Also I hope st holders and regular attendees are looked after like they were for the Bourgoin match.

Agreed BN2 its ok to make hay while the sunshines but imo it would be wrong to hike up the prices for a SF onto those that were at the SG watching the scarlets in october
