Regions Hold Exploratory Talks to Join the Aviva

Stuart Gallacher has told BBC that the regions have held talks with regard to leaving the RaboDirect Pro 12 to join the English Premiership.

Gallacher told The Back Page that talks have been held, but any deal seems unlikely at the moment.

“I'm not saying that I wouldn't welcome it... it's a product you can get some revenue out of. However, there are massive hurdles to climb before you could anywhere get the green light, 'a' from your union and 'b' from the other unions.”

"Under the terms of the IRB it would be not sanctioned so therefore you have to breakaway and go and play beyond the controls of your unions, but most importantly the control of the International Rugby Board."

It’s a move which would be welcomed by both regions and their supporters, with the RaboDirect failing to win over the imagination of potential fans. The regions know they need to do something if they are to improve their revenue stream and keep hold of their best players.
