Blues to Sign Williams?

Rumours at Parc Y Scarlets are suggesting that the Cardiff Blues have snapped up their highly rated 21 year old centre, Scott Williams ahead of next season.

Posters at fans-site Scarletfever.org are linking the hugely talented Wales Under 20’s inside centre with a move to the Cardiff City Stadium. Those rumours seem to be gathering momentum, although nothing official has been announced as of yet.

The potential move has angered Scarlets fans who see Williams making a permanent step up to the region next season, following the departure of talisman Regan King, bound for Clermont.

The Blues currently have Jamie Roberts, Casey Laulala, Def Hewitt, Gavin Evans and Tom Shanklin on in the centre, but it’s expected that Shanks will be retiring through injury, while Evans is unlikely to feature in Young’s long term plans and could be shown the exit door in the summer.

In a World Cup year, Roberts will be absent for the majority of Magners League matches, possibly leaving just two senior players or the role, meaning a signing would be a wise move by the Blues board.

It’s also common knowledge that the region are looking to slash wages and create a new, young squad upon which to rebuild.

In other news, Martyn Williams has been offered a contract at London Wasps. If the veteran flanker did move, he’d join former Blues Tim Payne, Andy Powell and Nicky Robinson at Adams Park next season. The player has not yet signalled where he will be signing, but boss Dai Young is reportedly confident he will be staying with the Welsh region.
