The Cardiff Blues have today announced they are attempting to sign Jonah Lomu on a long term deal following his 7 month contract, which expires in June.

Lomu is widely regarded as the best player in the last 20 years, and when Cardiff announced his signing back in October, everyone in Wales wanted a chance to see the superstar.

 

His story is one of real character, and if he somehow makes that World Cup target a reality, you can grantee a blockbuster movie would be just around the corner.

 

Since his arrival, the Blues have recorded nearly 37,000 fans in just 3 games, including a Celtic League record attendance against N-G Dragons, and the Blues want Jonah to become a regular feature at the Arms Park following his 7 month stay.

 

Head coach Dai Young said today,

 

‘He is enjoying his time here and getting better with every game. It’s really something we will talk about further down the line.’

 

However, Lomu had always made his intentions perfectly clear, stating that he wished to return to province North Harbour, get a Super 14 contract and eventually make New Zealand’s squad for the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

 

‘We know he’s deep in talks with the New Zealand Rugby Union about playing super 14, so it’s unlikely he’ll stay but it’s a path we’re willing to explore.’

 

Lomu’s impact in Cardiff has been massive, with many former and new fans turning up in their droves to see the legend in their local colours. It’s improved the regions image and has given die hard fans one thing to really be proud of from the last 5 years of cup-less rugby.

 

It’s very unlikely Jonah will stay, but the new way of life seems to have suited him, and he is facing a good standard of rugby here. But Dai has conceded, the buck stops at the big man,

 

‘If he was open to it, we would pursue it. But it is something Jonah has to want as well.’

 

At the moment, talks are in very early stages. It’s believed the contract has been offered, with no strict decline as to when he has to decide.

 

Whatever Jonah chooses to do, having just graced the Arms Park is a memory Cardiff will not forget. Of course, that is until Tana Umaga signs next summer!
